Your only concern for looking at a higher grade drive is if you plan on leaving your drive hooked up and running 24/7. The highest speed USB chipset on the market right now is the Cypress CY68300B chipset. You might look for an enclosure using that.

I posted links to a couple of external drives awhile back that others are having good success with. I have not been able to make my Seagate DB35.3 choke yet but typically the usb chipset will be your biggest bottleneck.

For those who are turning their drives off most of the time, MyBooks and FreeAgents are working fine.

But it is early yet! :)

I've been searching for an enclosure that uses the CY68300B chipset but have been unsuccessful thus far. Are you aware of any?

That's nearly all we have, on my recommendation, not because their the best but because with the CompleteCare coverage, you could back over it and I can get the parts in a day or two from Dell and fix it myself. I literally had to rebuild one - only the ram, proc, and hard drive were original. Rather than send me a new one which would have taken a week, I got the parts the next day.

I have three brutal users who have T Series Thinkpads. Only Toughbooks are tougher!
 
A pc repair tech told me there are about a half dozen different screw sizes holding Dells together. Most of the others have 10 or even 15 different screw sizes and take a lot longer to service. He said he can replace a motherboard in a Dell laptop in about 1/2 hour.

On the one I completely rebuilt, maybe 4 different size screws, most of the time only two or three at most.

Yes, they come apart quickly and are easy to figure out. Plus you can sign up at their technician site, DCSE.dell.com and then you have complete step by step instructions with photos for repairing/replacing all components for every machine they have ever made.

ok, without going through 25 pages, how do i turn the sleep off on a seagate without losing my 200gb of stored material?

If you don't want the drive to run 24/7 then turn it off every night, or hook it up to a switched a/v receiver or power conditioner with a switched outlet system.
 
I bought an Eagle Consus W-Series ET-CSWSIU2-BK 3.5" USB2.0 to IDE + SATA Aluminum External Enclosure (same as what KAB is using) and stuck a WD 160GB IDE drive into it. I bought this more for my PC, but thought I'd plug it into the 622 and see what happens. I had already formatted the drive as ext3 on my linux machine.

The 622 recognized the drive no problem and the "manage..." options appeared on the menu. Of course I can't actually manage anything because I haven't activated the EHD feature, but I noticed it didn't ask to format it.

Does it only ask when you have activated the feature or did it not ask because it was already formatted ext3?

I'll have to edit this with the exact drive model when I get home, but it sure works nice on the linux box :)

You need to activate.
