SatelliteGuys.US DishNetwork Uplink Activity Discussion- Week Ending 10/13/2007

Dish should be ashamed of this weeks uplink vs what DTv has now... this is pathetic on their part to not have even linked ONE new hd channel up this week..... (excluding that ATT nonsense) again i repeat.. BOOOO DISH BOOO...

I agree 100%.:up

Direct TV is accepting new customers! As for me, I'm very happy with the direction Dish is taking with their HD programming. We have several HD channels I never watch(most of the Voom), but I think we have the best of what is available. No need for "Tit for Tat", we should be holding out for the best channels until the new birds are up and going.

Short memory on alot of people parts...
Who was the HD leader before this?
Who had more HD content for the last 1 year+?
Who has had more local channels longer?
Who is requiring there customers to get new equipment just to get there new HD?
Who has to pay for there leased equipment when they join?
Who has the better DVR's?
Who is the cheapest to get started as a new customer?
Who's upgrade program is better?

To me, this was an easy choice when I signed up...I did some research, and figured that E* was the place for me. Maybe for a short time D* may have an edge, but really what channels and content would make you switch right now and pays hundreds or more $'s to switch to them? Maybe if you are a complete sports nut, then it would be worth it, but for HD? Not much of a differance overall. Couple channels here and there. E* has been blowing D* out of the water for so long with HD content that it is hard to say they have dropped the ball. And if they had the extra birds up now, there would be no question as to who would have the most HD content, but until then, people need to relax and quit whining because they are not getting Sci-fi HD or TWC hd, both of which are mainly stretch o vision. Give E* time to get there stuff in order and wait paitiently.

yeah, relax for a while guys. I know that I for one don't have time to watch all the HD stuff we got now.

to add to B_Kranski's list,
Who is the only provider with dual-output receivers?

Dish is going to have to be a lot more selective in the coming days. DirecTv has enough space now to throw in all kinds of filler channels.. And a lot of what D* has added has been just that, filler. Most are not even broadcasting a lot of HD Content.. But they do look better than the SD counterpart. I am sure somewhere at E* people are scrambling to find some way to put real HD up there. But take this with a grain of salt, E* is going to be behind until they get a new sat up there. Yes they have room to add a few more, but I believe that they are looking for just the right channels to add. If you like your Dish then just hang on and they will eventually get more space to add more. Or you can jump ship and head to D*. But if you want the honesty from a guy who has both in his house, Dish is still the better of the two. My D* receivers gets a workout only on the Local OTA because of the dual tuner that can record two OTA Channels.. But the workhorse is my Dish ViP 622. I really have no love for the D* HR20. It's cumbersome and just not as agile as the 622. Give E* a chance to play catch-up.. But it isn't going to happen as quick as most of you want it too.. If E* had all the space D* had right now they would be throwing out fluff too.

There really are not many national HD channels out there that I still want aside from maybe USA for Monk and Psych. I'd rather they add the premiums in HD from the multi-plexes. That, along with FSN NY and MSG HD is really all I'm still after. I'm glad they're avoiding crap like CNBC HD, why do we need that? However, since I'm the one in the minority (someone wanting premiums, not nationals), my voice will never matter. BUT, there's still hope with FSN NY and MSG because I'm not AS MUCH in the minority there.

What you have to remember is that USA-HD could launch - and Monk and Psych could still be in SD only.
Note that UNI-HD (same ownership) has access to Monk, and yet only the same old episodes are shown in HD, and new episodes are not in HD.
Food Network has FoodNetwork-HD, but only 2005 and 2006 episodes of "Good Eats" are shown in HD, the new 2007 episodes are only shown in SD. The show "Emeril Live" is not shown in HD at all.
So, even if you get a National Channel in HD, it is likely that your favorite show on the Channel will NOT be shown in HD.

USA HD actually did launch and new episodes of Monk are in HD.

Maybe you know something the rest of us do not know. What direction is dish going with hd???? I would like an answer to that question.

They are putting up a new Sat in 2008 to provide as much HD as possible. That's good enough for me. Many of these new HD channels have very little HD content atm and none of it is must have.

It is my belief that Dish is waiting to put up a block of HD. They will want to use the last 12 or so easy to fit HD channels wisely. Maybe 2 blocks of 6 this year with the most popular channels. DIRECTV will be past them until they get their new satellites up, but if they do a good job and get the best new HD channels, they should remain competative.

Are you trying to say NBC-Universal and Food Network are abandoning HD and going back to producing shows in SD? Why would they produce a show in HD for the 2005 and 2006 seasons and then go back to their old equipment and produce the show in SD? I really don't think there is a lot of this one step forward, two steps back stuff going on. You may have cited a few examples (I wouldn't know since I don't watch those shows) but I think overall, the channels are putting more and more HD on the air, little by little, not the other direction. No?

Yes they are but some have very little currently. Food HD is dedicated but the new NBCU channels are not.

Do I have inside information? No! However, I have been a Dish customer since 1997 and have followed Charlie and His team very closely and I think they have a vision for Dish. The plans for the new satellites and the conversion to Mpeg-4 have been discussed on this forum in great detail. IMO Charlie has instructed his executive staff to focus on channels that add value to the existing HD line-up. If you are a customer who has 100 HD channels.....but only watch 30 of them......where is the added value?

You are right. Focus on channels that add value. HDPPV. NHL Center Ice. NBA league pass. Added value for dish deep pockets. Not for its subs.
