5-07-08 HD Rumors.

Chances are that you won't see any HD video of the Olympics on ESPNews (or any non-NBCU station, for that matter) unless it is days after the event has aired (at which point it will be old news b/c of the time difference). NBC doesn't let anyone have video, much less HD video, for highlights so expect to see lots of still photographs and results screens. (Though last Olympics I seem to remember ESPN only reported on them after all the baseball highlights). There may be some at NBColympics.com, but expect the on-air highlights to be few and far between. This, from an article written shortly after the last Winter Olympics:

"We were limited by highlights restrictions, as well as not having any camera access to the Olympic Village, venues, or most press conferences," explained Vince Doria, senior vice president and director of news for ESPN. "We understand the scope of the event and would like to have done more."

ESPN - Rights issues chill ESPN's Olympics coverage - Columnist

To be perfectly honest I really dont care for the Olympics I just want the main sports highlight and from what I seen on ESPN2 where they give you ESPNNEWS on a occasion the highlights and layout are incredible...

How many of us are going to be surprised when the Olympics come and we don't have at least one of the NBC-U channels in HD? I know I won't be surprised at all.

I hope I get proved wrong, but we'll see. There's still plenty of time for them to add the missing channels...

How do you figure? Dish has them all already.

Olympics broadcasts will be available on NBC HD, USA HD and Universal HD

In addition if NBC-U decides to put some Olympics HD content on Bravo HD then that is not an issue either as that channel is also scheduled to launch tomorrow on Dish.

Most people don't care about the Olympics. There ratings prove it every time.

I'm old enough to remember when ABC covered the Olympics as an athletic event and we saw hours of track and field events, if it was still that way there would be more viewers.

Now in each hour of coverage, we will get 55 minutes of " GO USA" , Home boys, up close and personal, USA teams training, YEA USA, and then 5 minutes of an event that has a USA athlete in it. We never get to see the great performers from the rest of the world.

The olympics was always supposed to be about individual excellence, not team medal count.

According to what I've read, there will be Olympics coverage on both CNBC-HD and MSNBC-HD. CNBC-HD is not currently one of our channels, and MSNBC-HD is not even available yet.

Bravo HD tomorrow? Cool! That's the first I've heard that it's coming this week.

Well said. I will be more interested in any "findings" over on the FTA forum once the Olympics get started.

I do agree...ESPN News is rather pointless. How many ESPNs are really needed, anyway?
In our house NONE :)

Dish made a bold move offering the dishHD (only) package that does not allow RSNs. The next step is to offer a sports voyeur free HD package for even less

Talon Dancer

And yes fkent484, this is just my opinion that may not be shared by all

I don't think kids really care about HD or picture quality.

I was responding to someone who said that they would switch to HD only package. For us, Nick has to be included before ever switching to HD only. I do agree with you that they don't care about it except my 12 year old is starting to a bit.

Scott beg them for fox news hd

Scott please tell your channels at dish, that so many of their customers want fox news hd and fox business channel hd, look at the top 3 wish list thread. This makes more sense that espn news hd. We have two espn channels already hd . Specially in this election year with the conventions, and fox has the contract for all the hd cameras in the conventions for the pool feed.

Also the travel channel, equator hd is very repetitive , and travel channel shows us all these wornderful locals in hd.

In this era of blue ray, we can get all the movies we want in blue ray, we want news and travel in hd , that is something we can't buy.

Thank you scott for all the wonderful news and dedication you bring to this site.

Actually, the bulk of your post could be considered speculation. And I actually come here for that.
Everyone here is entitled to their opinion about channels.

It gets old reading how this channel sucks or that channel is pointless, or everyone wanted SciFi/USA and no one wants Toon Disney/Bravo, etc.....

Frankly, I want them all in HD. Then I can choose for myself which ones to watch and which ones to block.

Right now our choices are too limited to be thumbing our noses at the next new HD channel launch.

Of course, this is just my opinion. :)

DIsh knows this already and wants to add them, however they are in a lawsuit with News Corp as News Corp wants Fox News in the AT100 package.

You will not see any new channels on Dish Network from Fox until this lawsuit is settled. This includes, Fox News, Fox Business, FX HD, Speed HD, and others.

Uplinks happen in the afternoon. So tune back in this afternoon.

There are 4 HD local markets scheduled to launch today, we have seen over the past few weeks that some of these markets do not launch in the afternoon but overnight Wednesday Night / Thursday morning. Also when HD locals launch on Dish they are not officially available until the next day. This means CSR's will know nothing of these new channels until tomorrow (even if they are already running) and in addition the Dish Network website will not mention these channels until tomorrow either.

Which markets other than Portland, ME and Hartford, CT?

As I posted on Monday in the Pub Members Forum... (Membership has its privileges) :)

Here are the HD launches we could see this week. :)

Looks like Hartford, CT, Portland, ME, Albany NY, Syracuse, NY and FT Myers Florida will win the HD locals lottery this week. All 4 networks for all the launches this week as well.
