"The University of Notre Dame and NBC Sports have reached agreement on a new five-year contract giving NBC the rights to televise Irish home football games from 2011 to 2015, extending the partnership between the University and network to 25 years.

Each season from 2011 to 2015, NBC will televise seven games at Notre Dame Stadium and an additional eighth off-site game airing in prime time."

I am surprised they re-upped, wonder what the terms were in comparison to the first contract

I don't think it's surprising. Notre Dame is the most polarizing team in college football. Even if they are bad, people will tune in to watch them get beat.

A 3-9 Notre Dame team got more press than some BCS conference schools with winning records.

I couldn't agree with you more.

My team, Texas Tech, was far superior to Notre Dame offensively in 2006 and 2007, yet the Irish got all the attention and my Red Raiders were an unappreciated team of ass-kickers.

If anyone wants to talk about an offensive genius,

Mike Leach >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Charlie Weis

The facts of the matter are that if ND has a slightly better then average team, one that would be picked 20th or so pre-season, the pre-season press will be filled with mindless spew about how "ND is back" and until the team is, once again, proven unworthy with its second or even third loss, will be ranked. That is why NBC picks up the team.

The interesting thing here is UND plans to play seven home games and an 8th neutral site game to which it would have home team TV rights, every year. That means it has FOUR away games to play, meaning it can only be in a home and home relationship with eight teams, as the rest will have to be teams willing to play with no return for cash or do two or three for one deals.

No.

If they're slightly better than avarage, they'l say "ND has a long road, but a decent start."

Good for me, as we're about to finalize a long-term contract with ND.

I'm going to South Bend in Fall of '09 :)

I can't believe that NBC renewed it. They are notorious for not paying for sports at all. They have had NFL, NASCAR, MLB and let them all go due to money.

Notre Dame was all they had left. They needed something to fill the Saturday void, since CBS has the SEC and ABC everyone else.

if NBC didn't renew the word is that FOX will pick it up

I am sure that Fox was interested but the conflict with Fox baseball during the month of September would be hard to reconcile with Notre Dame's desire to have eight home games.
