What is wrong with the Cleveland Indians?

BTW, the Tribe won thanks to Cliff Lee yet again. 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER and a career high 11 K. Lee has a 2.34 ERA and is now 11-1 this year! He deserves serious consideration for the AL starting spot for the upcoming All Star game.

Yeah, it's too bad Volquez and Lee just pitched. It would have been nice to see them go head-to-head this weekend.

9.5 back

They are now 9.5 games back and in last place.

The choir is now beginning to sing "May the angels take you into Paradise...":(

No clue. Apparently even the NL can't save the Tribe this season. In fact, we may be the only team in the AL to have a losing record against the NL! Sad state of affairs to say the least here in Cleveland....

How long till they trade CC?

A trade to the Phillies or Brewers would be great for the Indians. Both teams have a lot of young talent that would help them in the future.

The longer they hold onto Sabathia, the longer Cleveland is in the drivers seat in terms of negotiating. Every time Sabathia pitches his stock goes up. In the last 14 starts, Sabathia has pitched below a 1.95 ERA. Sabathia also leads the MLB in Strike-Outs with 118. Needless to say, he's returned to Cy Young form.

I still won't completely rule out the Tribe making one last offer to keep Sabathia either. He's grown up here in our farm system and I would like to think he'd consider a fair offer if given.

Sabathia is looking for a deal in the neighborhood of $25 million a year, for 6 years. That type of contract is what Santana, Zito and Zambrano have established for a top of the line starter. The Indians are willing to pay Sabathia around that type of money, but do not want to invest it past 4 years. Why not? Well, Barry Zito, Carl Pavano, Pedro Martinez. All received the big payday, and all have struggled for one reason or another since getting the deal. If other teams are unwilling to go 6 years based on the same facts, the Indians will be in better position to keep him ourselves.

What a nightmare. Deja vu all over again for Cleveland against Cincinnati.

Last winter in Week 16 of the NFL season, the Browns need to simply beat a Bengals team that was 5-9 to go to the playoffs.
Derek Anderson plays horrible and the Browns lose, go on to finish 10-6 and no playoffs.

45 days ago, the Indians were in first place and had won 7 of their last 8 going into Cincinnati.
They get swept by the Reds and that starts a run to last place that the Reds cement by taking 2 of 3 in Cleveland.

Cleveland probably had the easiest interleague schedule this year and went 6-12. The only other AL team with a losing record was the Jays at 8-10.

I think Sabathia goes to the Yankees. Ken Rosenthal said it best Saturday on FOX. If the Yankees acquire C.C. for prospects and he doesn't handle the NYC pressure well, then the Yankees let him walk into free agency. Sure the Yanks will be minus the prospects that they would trade to the Tribe, but they'd more than likely get back draft picks via free agent compensation. If C.C. does ok in the Big City...well that's obvious...the Yankees gained a top-flight starter for the pennant race and have more than enough resources to sign Sabathia after the season concludes.

That would be a very dumb thing for the Tribe to do.
The Yankees have absolutley NO players that are close to being major league quality, they have been in the same situation for several years now, not wanting to part with any of thier top people, Chamberlin, Johnson and Kennedy.

They still expect teams to jump at thier offers because of who they are.
Notice Minnesota was not stupid enough to deal with them either.

I say send Sabathia to the Tigers, we have hitters that they would be happy to have, although I am not sure who I would be willing to trade.
at one time there was thoughts of Thames going to Cleveland and several minors.
Thames deserves a full time position and he has had a hard time getting one in Detroit.

Are you talking about Marcus Thames as the cornerstone of a trade for Sabathia or as part of a package with prospects?

Sorry Jimbo, no way Shapiro trades Sabathia to a divisional opponent.

Stuck in a recurring nightmare

This was the title on the front of the Sports Page in The Cleveland Plain Dealer this morning. Rather fitting, huh? For those of you who've lost interest in the defending AL Central Champs and the team that inspired a local radio personality to call 2007; "The Season of Dreams", let me bring you up-to-date on your '08 Tribe..... aka "The Season of Nightmares"!

At the start of this week, the Indians were 9.5 games out of 1st place. There were only 12 games left until the All-Star Break and the next 8 games were against teams ahead of us in the AL Central, followed by 4 games against the Rays. This was coined the "last ditch effort" to turn things around and prove to the fans that there would be meaningful games played in August and September. Personally, I already thought the white flag has been raised after our poor showing against the bottom dwellers during inter-league play.

Well, 3 games into the stretch, we lost every one of them to the first place White Sox. To make it even worse, we lost in the 10th inning two nights in a row by a walk-off home run. We are now 12.5 games out with no relief in site!

The Tribe is off today. Needless to say, the front office will not be....

“We’re going to be meeting, we’re going to be talking,” the Indians’ manager said before Wednesday night’s series finale against Chicago. “We have a lot of things we have to work through right now.”

Sure to be the hot topic of discussion will be which players the Indians want to rebuild with, and which ones will be made available to trade.

What's wrong with the Cleveland Indians?

Absolutely nothing after watching that ESPN piece about the little boy with cancer. :)

Very true Bill. Those kinds of stories make you realize that as much emotion we pour into our teams as fans, in the grand scheme of things there are more important things in life.

Not happening Jimbo. First off, we can't empty the cupboard anymore. Second, I think Cleveland has to be nuts to trade him, unless they know something about his health we don't know. They need to open the wallet and pay this guy, even if he is having an off year. Pitchers with this kind of talent aren't falling off of trees.

If I told you before the season that Grady Sizemore would have more homers than Alex "I make more money than entire hockey teams" Rodriguez, that would have sounded so crazy that I'd probably sell my entire Buffalo Sabres card collection.

Can you say "Indians record for most homers by a centerfielder?"

Can you say "A.L. Home Run Leader?"
