Hey guys, I know this may be the wrong forum for this kind of thing, but I have to start somewhere. I found this "thing" attached and installed with a FTA and Dish 500 system that I recently bought from a neighbor.... blah blah blah... but I have no idea what it is.... any ideas?

by the way it had a coax connector on the back of it... i am thinking that it may be some kind of antenna???

alright, well now that I know what it is, it doesnt really matter anywas I guess, cause in Febuary 2009, standard OTA channels will not work anyways.... as for the "nakedness" of the unit, it was that way when I took it down.... and that is why I had so much trouble identifying it, there are no numbers on it what so ever, I guess they were all on the outside cover.

If anyone has any good ideas for what it could be used for.... let me know...

Thank you everyone for your help.

Not quite.. only analoge channels go away... you still can use it for digital channels. After all the same frequency's are used, just diffrent modulation schemes. Why not get a converter box for digital sub channels, or if you have a high def reciver hook it up for locals in high def as well as any subchannels. You might be surprised at what channels you can digitally get for free and thats up there that you never knew about.

...and in many areas, the analog channels will still be around. Local repeaters, as I understand it, will be exempt. My mother-in-law lives in the little Idaho town of Burley. Pretty much every station she (barely) gets is off a repeater; she's much too far away from the original signals. She has just one digital channel, and one more planned by 2009. She got all worried when she heard about the changeover, but I don't expect much to change for quite a while in her case. Just to be sure, I snagged her a Hisense DB2010 HDTV STB for $5 and tucked it away.

I get nearly two dozen digital channels locally. It makes a good backup to our cable tv (comes with the internet). Trying different antennas (like dishes) can be fun.

PS. Oh, and I'm not dead. Hi guys! Between our preemie son, work, and massive debt my poor 3ABN dish literally has cobwebs on it... hoping to change that!

I made an antenna based on this design and it worked quite well in my situation. It was better than CM4221 but I ended up with CM4228 as I am blocked from the signal. no LoS.

The Square shooter works adequately if you're relatively close to your transmitting towers and your locals are all UHF. It won't receive VHF very well at all. It is a good compromise if you're short on space.

Nice to see you back around here, Charred!

Never saw inside a Square Shooter.
Just shows to go ya, it's all profit, eh?

Here's a thread in the OTA forum, where we're discussing some of the inexpensive digital converter boxes for over-the-air TV.

The bulk of 'em sell for $50 or $60, and the government will pick the first $40 of that.

Depends on your zip code, but you may be able to get dozens of channels.
I receive 20+ stations, broadcasting 50+ subchannels, in the LA area.
Yea, it's like basic cable! - :up
