Boston could get Brian Giles

I was on Espn.com, what a mistake, guess who was on the page. Anyway, I saw an article about how Boston has made a waiver claim for Brian Giles of San Diego. Here's the link.

I've always like Brian Giles, so he would be a welcome addition. With Ortiz, Lowell, and Youkilis all currently banged up, the Sox could use the added bat. Does anyone know if Giles can play centerfield, or is he strictly a corner outfielder?

I've always liked Giles too. He's had a solid career so far. He came up in the Indians farm system in 1995 and played his first 4 years in Cleveland. Through 3 different teams and 13 years, he's a career .293 hitter and carries a .914 OPS. Very serviceable indeed!

Actually Bill, out of 1,671 career games, Giles has played center field 301 times. Every other time, he's played corner outfield.

Why not? The Red Sox arn't giving anything up besides taking on his salary to get Giles. He's batting near .300 this year. Sure he doesn't have as many RBI's or HR's this year as in the past, but I definately he would help the Red Sox lineup this year.

That's what I thought. I was thinking maybe the Sox were looking at Giles to play an occasional CF, because of the lack of production out of Jacoby (although he seems to be snapping out of it lately) and Coco. Still, I'd pull the trigger on this if they can and they can rotate these guys.

Giels is now a singles hitting defensive liability.

There is a reason that every single team in the NL (including ones that could use an OF bat) passed on him.

I understand the Red Sox don't want the Rays to possibly get him, but he's not going to help any team down the stretch as a daily contributor.

The outfielder, 37, is comfortable in San Diego, because of his family's ties to the area and because he likes the playing time. Giles grew up in San Diego and is interested in finishing his career there. He starts for the Padres, and he would not have done so for the Sox. Giles is batting .295 with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 104 games this season in right and center field.

In 1990, Red Sox GM Lou Gorman was widely criticized for not claiming Willie Magee on waivers when doing so would have blocked him from going to Oakland.

Yup. The infamous, " but where would we play them?" quote from Gorman , after he was criticized for letting BOTH McGee and Harold Baines go to the Athletics. That quote is still referenced on WEEI periodically.
