2008-09 College Bowl Season

We are in agreement that the FLA Defense has not had a power house offense like OK. However FLAs Offense has faced some strong defences.. Something OK has lacked. So how strong is their offense really? How strong is FLAs Defense Really?

At least this game we can decide that on the field ;)

Hmmm. OU played the #2 defense in the country, TCU, and put up 35 points and 436 yards total offense. Could have been more, but OU ramped it down in the 4th quarter.

That was also their lowest scoring game all season... Now Imagine if TCU had an offense as good as FLAs... Would of been a much closer game.
OU didn't try to score at all in the 4th quarter. Of course, that was before the Texas loss. After that, it was no mercy on anyone. :)

What about the 3 games before TCU they scored over 50 points each game?

1. Chattanooga - truly a patsy. It was 50-0 at halftime.
2. Cincinnati - Big-East Champion. Closer game at halftime, but OU still ramped it down in the 4th quarter.
3. Washington - another patsy (who knew?). Couldn't help but score on every possession. Bradford came out after 3 quarters leading 48-7.

TCU was way better than all those, but the game still wasn't close.

The only reason OU lost to Texas, letting them score 45, was because Ryan Reynolds, the captain of the OU defense, was knocked out for the season with a torn ACL. No excuses, injuries are part of the game. Austin Box, the red-shirt freshman replacement, is good, but he wasn't ready yet.

"... Texas players could discern a difference in Oklahoma's defense after Reynolds' departure. It was also no coincidence that Texas' rushing game started clicking as soon as he left the game.

"Ryan is the heart and soul of their defense," Texas quarterback Colt McCoy said. "When he went out, it didn't change anything for us. Their secondary backed off a little bit and that allowed us to use (Texas tailback) Chris [Ogbonnaya] to get a couple of big runs. It was a big momentum changer for us." ..."

WELL...it was bound to happen...

...The 2 QB system could never work more than 1 or 2 seasons. Too bad...

Marve granted release from Hurricanes scholarship

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Quarterback Robert Marve is leaving Miami, ending weeks of speculation about his future and adding to the tumultuous start of the Hurricanes' offseason.

Marve started 11 of 13 games this season for the Hurricanes, but also served a pair of suspensions in unrelated incidents, including one that kept him out of the Emerald Bowl.

He told The Associated Press on Tuesday in a telephone interview that he asked coach Randy Shannon for his release from the program, and hours later, the school announced that Marve was leaving.

"I had to get out," Marve told the AP from his family's home in Tampa. "I just decided that I can't play for Coach Shannon."

Marve's decision came hours after Miami fired offensive coordinator Patrick Nix. Marve and Nix were close, but Marve's decision was not necessarily related to the coordinator's dismissal.

Marve was one of the prized signings in Miami's 2007 recruiting class, but he missed his freshman season because of injuries sustained in a car crash that summer. He won the starting job for 2008, but Shannon planned to play freshman Jacory Harris into every game.

"I just felt like it wasn't fair to either one of us, honestly," Marve said.

Marve completed 116 of 213 passes for 1,293 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Harris finished the year 118-for-194 with 1,195 yards passing, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and even if Marve returned, Harris was going to enter spring ball as the Hurricanes' No. 1 quarterback, Shannon has said.

Marve said he and Harris are good friends, but Marve added that he simply didn't feel a connection to Shannon, and decided a change was necessary even though it'll mean he'll sit out again in 2009 under NCAA transfer rules.

Where will Marve go?

It's unclear if the release from his Miami scholarship came with conditions, such as not allowing Marve to transfer to another Florida school or a team on the Hurricanes' schedule in the upcoming seasons.

Florida, Tennessee and LSU have been mentioned as possible destinations for Marve, who gave no indication of where he might be headed.

"I've got to sort a lot of stuff out," Marve said.

Earlier Tuesday, Shannon told WQAM radio he would have preferred Marve stay.

"Robert has to accept that, 'Hey, I have to be a person that is willing to do what we are doing at the University of Miami,' " Shannon said.

But Marve's short time as the Hurricanes' starter was marred by two incidents, both deemed serious enough to merit keeping him off the field.

He drew a one-game suspension to start this season because he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge related to an act of vandalism on Oct. 31, 2007, which is consistent with the policies Shannon put into place when he took over as coach two years ago.

Marve's second suspension was for missing class for the fourth time in the semester, though he said he was only late to the class because he was speaking with another professor.

He was suspended for the Emerald Bowl, which Miami lost to California 24-17. The Hurricanes finished the season 7-6.

"It was very hard, very frustrating for me to watch that," Marve said. "I thought I could have helped."

anders, I haven't heard from you in a few days.

No comments on Carolina's bowl game? Their WR had a monster game, but lost a heartbreaker.

Oh, and your Panthers dodged a bullet against the Saints in a game they SHOULD have lost.

No comments because I was away. I went to the bowl game in Charlotte. It was a great game up until the end. Hakeem Nicks was unreal. Sadly that may be the last time I'll see him in a Carolina uniform. He'll be playing on Sundays soon. If the Heels can figure out how to close out games they should be awesome next year.

Oh and for as much as I complain about the bowl system, which is terrible, games like the one Saturday are a heck of a lot of fun to attend.

Surprised to hear Ohio State has not sold out their allotment of Fiesta Bowl tickets. I guess the economy is even affecting Buckeye Nation. Is everyone bored of another trip to Arizona, or is there apathy because it's the first time in a few years they're not playing for the national championship?

I think it is a combination of the economy and the fact that there are WAY TOO MANY bowl games has finally caught up with the NCAA. There are tickets for the Orange Bowl Game between VT vs. Cincinnati on EBAY for $50 which includes 2 tickets, parking ticket and tickets to the Fan Experience tickets. THAT is cheaper than when the Dolphins play.

Probably the economy...
Lets see, it's January,
Columbus is lucky to get to 30* and Arizona is going to be in the 60's* ....
Hmmm tough choice.

Jimbo

Seems like it is a tough choice this year though.

Sandra
It's not really a tough choice it's just that people DON'T have the expendable income any longer.

btw, how short are they ?
Will they sell thier portion by game day ?
Buckeye fans have always supported their teams regardless, Fiesta Bowl loves the Bucks because they pack the place.

Even if they don't sell out, there will be plenty of fans there.

Jimbo

they are playing Texas... long way to go to watch your team be destroyed.

Be careful what you say.

Last year, on DBSForums, Sam and David thought Oklahoma would destroy West Virginia, and the opposite occured.

That and they are playing Texas... long way to go to watch your team be destroyed.

Distance has nothing to do with it, they go to the same place 3 of the last 5 years, or something like that.

Money is probably the # 1 issue and the fact that they may/or may not get killed could be in the back of peoples minds as well.

Yes money is a big issue, as you say the #1 issue.

I just bet though if this was a national title game, people would find the money some where ;)
