Why doesn't this work?

The polarizer also has a pulse. (insert heartbeat sound here...;)) The pulse is of a longer or shorter duration depending on how far it needs to move for the skew setting of each satellite as channels are changed. The 5 volts is what turns it further/longer as you adjust the skew, in either direction manually.

I'm gonna go for it. What else can happen? I'll leave the ground alone and swap the other two.

Guys, I know this sounds nuts, but I reversed the polarizer wires, putting red where it was supposed to be, and white on the other (leaving ground alone) and I suddenly got strength 68 and quality 13 on G1 channel 3. There was no picture though... no sound, no snow.
But, the big surprise is when I turned the unit back around so I could see the front panel, I found that the DCII light is on! I know this means something, because you guys ask about it every so often. Does this mean I can now reset? I could not find reset anywhere in the menu system. The unit is now just sitting on channel 3 with the DCII light on.

68 and quality 13 on G1 channel 3
Your are getting close!
G1 Channel 3 is where the Receiver gets the Channel / Sat Maps and Guide Info from.
You do need to tweak though, Quality should be much higher, around 70 or so.

I think I've hit a wall on this skew matter. The unit doesn't let me save settings by channel, only by satellite. So if I set horizontal to 30 and vertical to -5, it stays that way for all channels. And it only allows the H or V to be changed, if the signal is strong enough on that channel. If not, then it only allows changes based on the last strong channel adjusted.
For example, I go to channel 3 and I want to adjust the vertical skew, but it won't let me... the vertical cannot be selected, because the last strong signal I adjusted was channel 10.
So, I have to go to channel 11 first, and there I find the vertical skew is suddenly available for tweaking. Now I switch to channel 3, go back into Install Satellites, and presto; vertical is now available for tweaking (and horizontal is unavailable). Using this technique, I was able to bring 5, the ARTs channel into near crystal clarity, but that cost me channel 10. Going back, I could realign to channel 10, but then channel 5 was lost to the fog.
And I lost my DCII lock.
Is there maybe a software fix that can somehow be loaded into this machine? I believe it is a model 920.
AND, I noticed on another thread that someone else is having trouble getting a signal from G1 channel 3.

Ok... I don't remember you saying that they were connected wrong in the first place...that would have saved some head scratchin' on both ends! But, it's good that you got the DC lock on 3. I'm going to let the "polarotor guys" walk you through all the tweaking, though, since I don't use them. You're getting real close now, good luck! :)

Correct.
However, the Horz and Vert should be about 90 degrees apart. Like 30 and -60.
Go to G1 Ch5 - Arts Channel, Peak using Horz skew, then set Vertical -90 degrees from Horizontal number. You have to set the Skew for each Sat, not each channel.

I go to channel 3 and I want to adjust the vertical skew, but it won't let me...
Correct, G1 Channel 3 is a Horizontal Channel.

Been off for the holiday. Returned rented scaffolding. I guess we're ready to move into the area of what you called a Polarotor. Hopefully, it can all be done from inside the house, as summer is just about here in the Mojave Desert.
Should I start a new thread, or just continue this one?
We are eager to get past having to choose between odd and even channels.

Just horizontal (odd channels, right?).
..
I turned the receiver around and found a broken terminal connector, the kind you have to push down with your finger while inserting the wire. The red wire was just hanging there, so I doubled it up and jammed it into the hole.
..
Here's my observation of my skew problem:
When I get near a channel on any of the three satellites, C3, G1, or C4, I can select AutoPeak Dish and watch the index numbers go up and down until the dish is getting the strongest signal. Once in a while, the dish will have already been straight on the bird, and the counter returns to the same index number it started on. But at least I know the dish is moving, as the picture fades out and back in again.
Not so with the AutoPeak Skew... at least not with the vertical. When I find a channel with a light downfall of snow, and I have already peaked the dish, I try the AutoPeak Skew. If it is an odd number channel, the snow will momentarily increase to a blizzard and then come to a stop at which time the picture has a little less snow, or at worst, the same amount as when it started. The angle displayed on the horizontal will usually be different than when autopeak started. But when I try an even numbered channel (which are all pretty bad to start with), the angle display changes momentarily, but the picture does not. It doesn't improve or get worse, it just stays the same. And although I see the angle numbers go up and down the full range, it always ends on the same vertical angle that it started with.
So on satellite G1, I only get channels 5, 11, and 17. There's nothing on 3. When I first started seeing channels on this thing, I had a strong picture on G1 12, but it's gone now. That was before fixing the disconnected red wire. I also get a knockout clear set of colorbars and a nice tone on G5 17. The accompanying message says that the channel belongs to Disney.
..
It seems to me that the problem is most likely in one of three places;
1. at the connectors on the outside rear of the receiver
2. at the connectors on the inside rear of the receiver
3. up at the BUD, including the wire leading up there
Since I've already had problems on the rear of the receiver, that's probably the most likely candidate.
..
I suppose I can't order my son's ala carte programming until this is fixed, right?

There is nothing viewable on G1 Ch3, just a signal with the Sat / Guide info.
Put it on G1 Ch 5, good, clean Picture?
If so, change to channel 3, look at the front of the receiver, did a little Green Light pop on?
That is the "DC II" light, means you have a good lock on the Digital Channels.

Post your results.

G1 Channel 5, the Arts are coming through loud and mostly clear. There's a little bit of snow that we don't see over in our Ku band setup, so maybe it's just because the receiver is old.
..
Down on channel 3, it's just as you said, nothing viewable, no sound, but the DCII light is on.

THAT"S IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Time for a "soft" resert, with the receiver on G1 Ch3, unplug the receiver for 2 minutes, plug in a Walk Away - don't power up. The updated Sat and Channel maps will, give it 20 - 30 minutes.

Double you skews, peak channel 3 which is Horz, then the Vertical skew should be 90 different.

Okay, I'm on my way to unplug it for two minutes. And then plug it back in, I assume.
..
Then in twenty or thirty more minutes, something will have happened.
