PHONE LINES

Not tonight....true story...an isolated example but a MASTEC office in FL told the techs to make customers connect the lines or risk a fire hazard. It has to be true...it was on TV.

Joe

I'll see if I can find it.

so let me get this straight...

if you dont hook the phone lines, as the phone lines are acting like a fire safety switch or a fire exguisher, will cause your receiver to burn up?

if you DO hook it up.. your house wont burn down...? Correct?

wow.. i wanna sit down with the guy who said that and laugh.

Personally, I wish the cable and sat companies would stay out our phone stuff in the first place.
I'm not going into the sat business and setting up dishes while I'm at work for the phone company.
I'm not hooking up peoples Cable when doing my phone work ....

im buying you a 24 pack of beer of your kind...

i dont know how many times i tell that to my manager and he still tells me to do it. i said if i wanna hook phone lines, i will work for Qwest, but i CHOSE to work for a satellite company... to advoid doing phone line work.

Here ya go....from a Florida court case.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
BEFORE THE NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS BOARD
ATLANTA BRANCH OFFICE
DIVISION OF JUDGES

MASTEC ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES, a division of MASTEC, INC.
and Case 12–CA–24979
JOSEPH GUEST, an Individual
DIRECTV, INC.
and Case 12–CA–25055
JOSEPH GUEST, an Individual
Christopher C. Zerby, Esq., and Rachel Harvey, Esq., for the General Counsel.
Gavin S. Appleby, Esq., and Jenna S. Barresi, Esq.,
for the Respondent MasTec, Inc.
Curtis L. Mack, Esq., and Brennan W. Bolt, Esq.,
for the Respondent DirecTV, Inc.

DECISION
Statement of the Case...

...At least one supervisor told the technicians to tell the customer the receiver wouldn’t work without the phone line connected. Respondent’s witnesses conceded that this latter statement was not true. Several witnesses testified that, at one meeting, Operations Manager Christopher Brown told the technicians to do whatever they could to convince the customer, to say anything, even that the box (receiver) would blow up if not connected to the phone line. Several of General Counsel’s witnesses admitted they laughed at this statement and believed Brown was joking.

Christopher Brown admitted making the statement about the box blowing up if not connected to a phone line but claims he said this in order to add some “comic relief” during a tense meeting which appeared to be going nowhere. According to Brown, at every meeting the technicians brought up the same excuses why they could not make the 50% threshold and at each meeting he, Villa and the supervisors attempted to explain how they could. Brown and Villa both testified that they offered suggestions to the employees about ways to convince a customer of the benefits of a telephone connection but continued to hear the same complaints. Brown resorted to his “comic relief” only out of frustration with the lack of progress in convincing the employees of the need to improve their responder rates. While not disputing much of the testimony of General Counsel’s witnesses, Brown and Villa insisted that they never told the technicians to “lie” to a customer, or to do “whatever it takes”, to accomplish the goal of connecting phone lines.[6]...

The employees said they were forced to BS the customers.

oh im tempted to send this to my Supervisor but im afraid he's gonna be torked if i do.

lol thats stupid.

seriously why is the PHONE line required for?

if you order on by remote VIA phone line, you can only watch that PPV on that reciever, if you order by phone or online, you get all your PPV on all recievers.

hell i dont have a phone line and its easy to order a movie online.

Your HR22 is a DIRECTV recvr., Directv does NOT charge you for not having a phone line hooked up.
Two different issues here.

I'm aware of that. I thought the person I was originally responding to was suggesting that D* should start to charge customers for not having the phone line hooked up.

In any organization there is one overachiever who will just climb over everyone to get a pat on the head from a supervisor.

Bud will work nicely, thank you ! :)

Every week I go into homes where I have to try and determine what jack the Cable company guy disconnected our stuff and (hope he didn't destroy it on the way,.) reconnect it before my service will work inside the house. UGGH

That said, I can sell D* if I decide to mention it being available to them.
I'll usually take a look around to see if the have a LOS while doing my own work before I tell them about it. I don't make squat for selling it, so it's not a big deal.
I will try to explain things to the sub if they have questions about a recently installed set up though.

Personally, I wish the cable and sat companies would stay out our phone stuff in the first place.

Jimbo,
Here is how it goes...Directv tech runs an exterior telco line to a box. Then the exterior lime gets damaged by weed eaters or something and shorts all the telephones. Then the customer wants the phone company to fix the NDT situation....There are others.

And unfortunatly I fix them every day, as long as they have the TELEPHONE companies protection plan.
I also find the ones that have a bad modem in the recvr, (not as often) and the sub can't understand why I tell them to disconnect the phone from the box and call D* and have them replace the box.

No,

DISH does that, however.

My point was that IF there was a good reason for running the line then it is part of the installation. AND if it is so important then ....no phone line means no installation.

It must be sufficiently profitable to someone to go through all the crap to get it done. Just because there is no phone service is no reason, in their minds, for not running the lines. OR this one; when you connect another phone line to some isolated phone installations you loose all phone service until the telco boosts the amplification. OR if the phone line is damaged it could short the whole house. Stuff like that.

i heard that if you didnt hook the phone lines, the reciever will NOT activate when activatiing through IVR for directv

what a dumb thing to say.

suppose you roll up to a CELL phone acct only, how do you activate? say, sorry, you will need to get landline service that will cost you roughly 30.00 or more AND THEN we'll come back and install recievers bc we cant activate without landline...

or go dish network.

The ONLY reason I can see for the phone lines at this point is for them to still read the Access Card, also for them to have the Caller Id to work on the TV.

Personally I really like the CID on the TV screen, for some varied reasons, it doesn't always work (CE's i think) ...
You would think they might be able to find a way to send the incoming phone call to the TV via the internet instead of the phone line itself, someday.
as well as reading the CAM another way.

bottom line for Directv...

it affects your pay level.

hook it up.. 100% complete at every job... youre D*'s b*tch.... their robot they wanted

dont hook it up.. you get the lowest level pay which is bull, and if you want that good pay, you do what they want you to do.. whats next? we're human and sat installers. not phone lines installers

Are you guys still paid by the job ?
Drive your own vehicles, pay for yuour own gas ect. ?
If so, that is one reason I will only do D* stuff on the side for friends and family.
