Ohio News Net question

I have been trying to get the Ohio News Net (74W) on that 18" dish with the Linear LNB, has anyone tried this with a small dish? And do I have to put in the Video, Audio and PCR PID's ? What is the signal strength at your location?

I went to Lyngsat and checked the strength for my area and the map shows nearly 49 db strength for my area, I am getting something in that direction with a 85 to 90 db strength but absolutely no quality.

http://www.lyngsat-maps.com/maps/horizons2_namh.html

Should I give up on trying to get this with a 18" dish?

Thanks

Seems I have read here somewhere that folks have gotten ONN on a 18" dish. Have you tried to search the forums? It's a good strong signal on my 90cm (36") dish.

The 18" dish would not work for The Ohio News Network. I was getting around 85 db signal but no quality on my Visionsat receiver , I tried every angle and no go. I probably was hitting another satellite anyway...I re parked the dish back at 101W for now. On the Visionsat I get 72% quality with the 18" dish with the Linear LNB and 60% on the Fortec Star.

(BTW I did manage to get That Hotel Channel with History and Biography, but the signal levels were just barely hitting 17% Q on the Visionsat. The Visionsat will get stable signals as low as 18%..compared to the Fortec Star which seems to need 30+ %.)

I did get 95W CCTV with the 18" dish outside by the dish with a 22% quality on the Visionsat, (I did try re tweaking the skew and the settings...but nothing better than 24% peak) but the Fortec inside the house after a 100 foot run didn't get it at all.

I did try 123W looking for Research channel and University of Washington and didn't get a peep out of them either on the 18" dish.

I tried 72W ..no go on that either. I even entered a TP for a active "Wild Sports Feed" that someone reported active this morning...no go either.

But if anyone has a spare 18" dish lying around with a spare Linear LNB, 101W with 3ABN will come in with no problem.

Overall this has been a (good learning experience) ongoing experiment with the 18" dish. The next upcoming projects in the next couple of months.will include multi satellite LNB's with brackets. I thought about a motor, but I have several dishes now and the bracket/LNB multifeed method would be the most logical next step. I have to warm up now, it has been in the high 30's this morning with light wind....lol

Thanks for your comments...

I could get ONN with good quality reading on my little dish project, but mine's the old Dish500 dish. I think it measures around 21-22", don't have an 18" to try but ONN is pretty strong TP.

Until a few days ago, I could get the semi-permanent NBC feeds with good quality on 72W with an 18" dish. I was blaming the weather for losing them, but now it's not raining and I have 0 quality. I'm going to have to try moving the dish.

For some reason that satellite was always weird on the 18". If I'd peak on a strong transponder, the weak ones would disappear, and vice-versa. I wonder if it's interference from adjacent satellites.

Yes it will work providing the weather is OK at the uplink. I have it at my cottage in Canada and normally get between 40-60 quality. BTW its been there for 2 years and really have had no problems. Also I used a standard lnb on it with a homebrew bracket (bolt and a couple of conduit hangers)

Ohio News quality has fluctuated latelly. Use to be really high but now its pretty low so a 18" might not work.

I also did the 18" for AMC6 and had decent results.

Also the maps on Lyngsat take with a grain of salt. I think that means if the channels are sending the most power from the source. If they lower it, then that hinders the reception on smaller dishes

The weather was sunny and in the low 50ths here in lovely south New Jersey and I decided to break out the old 18x20 direct tv dish and see what I can get. I used the dish a Chapparral LNB and the receiver is the Fortec Dynamic. My TS sat is 74 west. Here are pics of the dish and SQ for 72, 74 and 79W.

Here is the same setup using a 500 Dish.

Can you guess what program is on KTEL?

ICE, your the man, It is Baywatch the Hawaiian Reunion, the whole intro was in English, when the program started they spoke in Spanish.

Mike, thanks for GREAT pictures of the setup and reception with the two dishes.

Is the Dish 500 larger than 18"?

I been experimenting with a old 18" Direct TV dish with a Linear LNB and a bracket.

I see the bracket you are using seems higher up than the one I am using. I could do some modifications and push the LNB higher.

Does that make a difference?
