Ouch. Franchise tag number on a DE last year was just under $9m. If that number is smaller than 120% of the final year of the contract that is expiring, he'll instead get that number.
College vs Pro coaching... just a different animal. It's like Lance Armstrong trying out for a Moto competition, why wouldn't he do well, it involved bikes? Because of recruiting vs draft/contracts the talent acquisition is so different, and the development of players is streched out over so long that potential can take more time to be realized instead of having players for 1-4 year stretches.
Similar, certainly not an easy switch, I can see why someone would be good at one (a good recruiter for example) and not at the other.

Excellent points. Also, Carroll's rah-rah attitude works a lot better with relatively poor 19 year olds than with filthy rich 25-30 year olds.

You assuming everyone that went to USC was poor....?
Just making a comparison between NFL players and college players, that's all. The point is Carroll will now be dealing with extremely well-paid football players as opposed to the college athlete. Even the odd truck or a place to live does not compare to the contract an NFL starter receives.
I did say 'relatively' poor, in relation to the NFL starter. You really need to read the whole sentence...

Looks like someone has re-assembled the 2001-2004 New England Patriots coaching staff.... sans Bill Belichick.
The Patriots have lost so much coaching and front office talent in the last few years.
I would of liked these guys to come back, but I understand going back under Bill really does nothing if they want head coaching jobs again.
Truth be told...the whole coaching tree under The Big Tuna...have created good coaches and sooner or later, those under that same tree would "branch out" to become head coaches.
As much as I dislike Beli-jerk, he IS a good football coach when surrounded by good players....then again, I have always thought the coach is only as good as his players.
Out of Weis, Crennel, Mangini, McDaniels and Pioli, the guy I REALLY would've like to have seen back (in his old post) is Weis.
My order would go like this.............
1. Weis
2. Pioli
3. Crennel
4. McDaniels
5. Mangini

The 2001 Patriots were arguably the least talented team to ever win a Super Bowl.
Conversely, the 1997 Pats roster was LOADED with talent from top to bottom, but Pete Carroll coached them into mediocrity. Lack of discipline was cited as the biggest factor (who can ever forget the infamous "mosh pit incident" in a Boston nightclub, followed by an absolute drubbing in Tampa three days later).
Don't get me wrong, you need good players to win in the NFL, but I don't think you'll get very far without a good coaching staff.
I just think that there are good coaches and that is it. I have always been under the impression that a coach really does not make that much a difference. I really do not believe in that rah-rah stuff. That is always I have always believe MORE in a coaching staff than a single coach. MAYBE the entire coaching staff that Pete Carroll had sucked....
