If their content is so great, they should offer full ala carte. Lets see just how many people want to pay for these so called "best channels in the country"

Ala carte has been discussed many many times. As it will weed out the weaker channels, it won't necessarily cause your cost to decrease. You will just pay more for fewer channels.

I don't see Ala carte as the answer. If they were to offer it it will cost someone more for what they get now. When ESPN and other popular networks need to defray the cost it will increase the guaranteed rate.

A-La-Carte will be ggod for the person who may only want 10-30 channels. You will find that your cost may be $1-$2 pr channel.

The big difference will be that the providers (D*,E*, etc...) will no longer be able to supply free hardware and installation with these programs. Much less revenue coming in per subscriber.

You may see something like a $300 price tag for a 1 room set up not including DVR.

As a one time hit, I'd take that. I'm one of said guys that would be in the 10-30 channel category

I'd also say that the provider will charge a lot more to lease/use the equipment.
So much for the one time up front cost.

Most people think a-la-cart will be the same price for each channel. You'll see more popular channels (ESPN, FOX news, CNN, etc) get much for for channels than others (E, Jewelry, etc.)

Therefore it may end up costing as much for the 20-30 channels you really want as it does to get those channels in a package that also includes 30 more "dog" channels.

If all channels were the same price, that would be okay, IF the price was reasonable.

I do not think ala carte will ever come because companies like Disney sell all their channels in a package tot he provider. Hows about giving us an opportunity on what companies to buy our channels from. People who do not care about sports could pass on the "ESPN" pack.

The only thing I worry about with Ala-Carte is that I tend to like the big, well-known channels and that the price of those channels will be the most expensive

I don't have an issue with packages, but I think there should be some sort of combination. Example: I have the Choice Xtra Plus but want to watch ESPN Classic, that means I have to pay $14.99 for one channel since don't care about the other channels. Give me the option to purchase ESPN Classic for a buck or two.

And BTW, between having to pay the $14.99 for ESPN Classics, the price increase for the Sunday Ticket and the elimination of Versus I have decided to go with AT&T Uverse. They may be the sports leader, but it comes at a very high price.

I need 17 channels. ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, Fox, Comedy Central, Discovery, Nick1, Nick2, Disney1, Disney2, ESPN1, ESPN2, NFL Red Zone, TNT, NESN, HDNet. Might be another 1-5 channels but not dying for them. So ala carte works for me even if I am being charged $2-3 a channel. I am also able to get HD OTA for NBC, CBS, PBS, Fox so I really need ABC and 12 cable type channels. The rest is fluff that I dont have time to watch. I have Netflix and that takes care of my movie selection. Even that takes care of my kids so I could even eliminate the Nicks and Disney.

I am so close to tossing Directv but I dont have an ABC HD solution or ESPN HD and NESN HD. I would be very inclined to end my 14 year satellite run with alternatives to those channels. My Windows MCE is built out and I am storing my DVDs on the hard drive including Blu Ray and HD DVD. Supplemented with Flash videos, Hulu, Netflix on Demand, I find my need for live TV especially through Directv to be less and less.
