This is just phase 1 of 3 in moving stuff from 77 to 72. Next week another group moves (mostly PPV) and the week after that another group moves.

They are making room on 77 for all the HD.

Yes Scott, What do you mean about all the new HD on the 77sat? Far as I remember it was supposed to be just for HD locals. All the new & existing HD national channels were supposed to go to 72.7 from 61.5 between now and the end of this year.

This looks like a lot of channels, but the bulk of them (43)are audio / cd channels. How much bandwith do those carry since they have minimun video? I notice most of them are on 3 or 4 transponders.

Sorry I shouldn't post when I am just waking up. :)

I meant to say the HD is going to 72.7. :)

DOH!

I would think that Dish will add more HD locals to 77 W with the space opened by moving CONUS programming to 72.7 W since when the QuetzSat-1 satellite is launched in August 2011 to 77 W, it will have a large number of spotbeams for locals so those HD locals will end up there anyway.

WOW, are they going to move all the SD Channels over to 72? They missed QVC & several others.

Thx,

Josh

I wasn't lying when I said there wasn't going to be much national stuff left on 77. ;)

The second move will dump about half of what is left on 77. Third move, really isn't a move, just virtuals of other channels but with the spanish audio preselected, like they do on WA.

Scott, what is going to go to 77 if they are moving channels off of that sat? Also if they are moving HD Nationals off 61.5, what are they going to do with 61.5 then?

What are they doing this?

Josh

Well, they are going to unload 61.5 while the satellite there is dying (echo3) Echo 12 Still remains in good condition there so that should continue spot service and keep the slot hot. I would asssume that once they get a replacement, it could go to launch additional hd services from that slot.

Looks like they'll leave 77 for HD LiLs and some PI channels probably in preparation for the spotbeam satellite at 77.

They're doing it just for you ;) since 72 works great in Maine.

Dish is suppose to get use of 24 TPs on the new QuetzSat-1 satellite at 77 W. My guess is that at least 16 of those TPs will be used for spotbeams and the rest could be used for Dish Latino package. Remember there are some limitations on Dish's use of 77 W in the U.S. because the Canadian DBS satellite(s) is less than 9 degrees away at 82 W. At 61.5 W, we know that E-15 is going there later this year and based on the recent Dish financial report, it will be a CONUS only satellite. Expect E-15 to be a lot like E-11 with very high power CONUS beams. E-16 is also going to 61.5 W and my guess it will be a large spotbeam satellite that will compliment the E-12 spotbeams. Expect most of the CONUS beams at 61.5 W eventually to be used for international programming.

They will have the space once DIRECTV has fully moved off 72.7.

As mentioned above they cannot have the 77 satellite give coverage near the Canadian boarder, effectively making it not useful for national programming. The Canadian DBS operators do not want interference.

Having national on 61.5 and 72.7 will more than cover all the national channels. Remember they have more than half of 61.5 as national. They will be able to have a lot of LiL coverage with 77.

Western arc 82 transponders (29 on 110, 21 on 119, 32 on 129). 10 spot on 110, 5 spot on 119, 16 spot on 129, 2 leased out. 49 in CONUS mode.

Eastern arc, 88 TPs (when DIRECTV moves off and 77 replaced with new sat). Currently just 8 running in spot, I think it can do 11 (E12). So assuming 24+11 in spot would leave 53 in CONUS mode between 61.5 and 72.7, also EA runs MPEG4.

Comparing DBS owned and leased licenses from WA to EA:

119 - 21 TP license
110 - 28
129 - 32

81 on WA (not counting the 32 on 118.7)

61.5 - technically 30 (but with the STA 32)
72 - 32
77 - 24

86 on EA - plus EA is using mostly 8PSK and MPEG4 which offers a huge savings. An easy calculation is to use is one QPSK 100% MPEG2 transponder is a base of 30. When you convert that to 8PSK you move up to 40. Now convert it to to MPEG4 and it jumps to 80. So basically it takes about 2.6 transponders on WA to do what one transponder can do on EA. Now of course all the HD on WA is already converted to 8PSK and MPEG4.

You can see they'll have plenty of bandwidth to throw around on EA when it is at the full potential after full build out.
