As fans of teams, we all have rivalries that we enjoy.

The ones where it feels like a lot is at stake every time you play them no matter what. Where the victories are sweet and the defeats are bitter. Where bragging rights can feel so glorious in triumph, so painful when beaten. When you play a team that you love to hate.

What are some of the rivalries that, as a fan of certain teams, you really enjoy?

For instance, as a Buffalo Bills fan, the rivalry that always gets me stoked is against the Miami Dolphins.

When I lived in Buffalo, and the Bills were a great team, playing Marino and his boys meant something. 'Squish the Fish' was the rallying cry.

Being a college football fan, lots of rivalries that I love.

Clean, Old Fashioned Hate between Tech and UGA.
Tech/Auburn has a long history, and is great when we play.
Tech/Clemson goes way back, to before Tech joining the ACC.
Notre Dame is a classic rivalry too.
Haven't played Bama in a while, but they still have us in their fight song. Plus the feud between Bear Bryant and Bobby Dodd was legendary. Dodd took us out of the SEC because of Bryant's cheating.

For the Dawgs, lots of good ones too.
The afformentioned Old Fashioned Hate
Can't forget the Tailgate Party, though it was more fun before the Evil Genius showed up.
Georgia/Auburn is great too.
Bama has them in their fight song too.

Yea said:
Go teach the Bulldogs to behave,
Send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave!

For pro football, grew up in Georgia with the Falcons. They don't inspire much, so no favorites there. Only thing that came close was against Tampa Bay, which has grown some since they were both put into the NFC South. But again, the Falcons don't inspire much.

My state is involved in two of the best rivalries in all of sports....

Ohio State vs. Michigan
Browns vs. Steelers

corrected ;)

For those that have only been paying attention to the last 10 years or so, you're right. For those of us who've been fans for much longer know better.

Just depends on how long you look at it ....
The same could be said about the Ohio State / M rivalry, if your new to it, it's really not there, but over the long haul, it's been great.

Currently, Steeler's - Raven's, Pats, Colts
Buckeye's of late, a game I really looked forward to was the games with Texas, they were VERY good games regardless of outcomes.

But not to Steelers fans though. All the ones here have transferred the hatred to the Raisins. The new pseudo-Browns have been too bad to even consider a rivalry.

Yankees/Red Sox...self explanatory.

Jets don't really have a rival...perhaps the Dolphins, but it's not a huge rivalry or anything. The Jets and Giants don't play often enough to be a rivalry, but the fact that the Jets have become the football talk of the city REALLY bugs Giant fans.

Knicks/Nets is barely a rivalry. Even though most people root for one of the teams, they actually root for the other team a little bit as well. Strange.

As opposed to Rangers/Islanders, where if the Islanders were playing a team from Mars and the fate of the planet hung in the balance, I say 'Let's go Mars'. All I need to hear is Islander fans on the radio 'haha we saved the planet'. Bag that. I'd rather be dead.

Rangers/Devils and Rangers/Flyers are also huge. NOBODY roots for the other hockey team around here.

Ohio State/Michigan...also self explanatory.

They say back in the day St. John's/Georgetown was a massive rivalry, but I've barely seen it.

Are these Rivalries for LAST PLACE ?

As an Iowa State graduate, the game against Iowa is always bitter - especially football. 3 years ago, ISU did not sell single game tickets to the Iowa game for two reasons:

1) To sell more season tickets
2) So Iowa fans could by tickets

I was talking about over the years instead of right now...which is how you measure a rivalry. I can see how what you said applies to basketball...but the Jets/Dolphins?

Sandra

I think I highlighted more than I wanted, sorry.

That said, Jets / Dolphins are no where's near the Steeler's / Pats, Colts, Ravens

OU/Texas - annual game at a "neutral" site, with the Texas State Fair as the background.

Chargers/Raiders - believe it or not, this is still a rivalry game, even for the Chargers. Any time you can get Al Davis mad, it's a good day. :)

The one rivalry I want, I can't have.
UConn and Backstabber College should play annually in Foxboro. It would be a massively popular game, and would be a tremendous rivalry.
Sigh. Maybe some day.

I can't really say that I enjoy the 'rivalry' that Celtic has with another team in Glasgow

I know nobody in the US cares (you don't have to tell us), but Rangers/Celtic is the rivalry that makes all rivalries on this side of the ocean seem tame.

Yankees/Red Sox, Ohio State/Michigan, Duke/North Carolina, Rangers/Islanders, Cowboys/Redskins, etc., are all tea parties amongst friends compared to the bitterness between those two teams and fan bases. There is simply nothing like it here that even comes close.

VT vs UVA
Florida St vs Florida
OSU vs Michigan ( I pull for Michigan hard!)

The match up between Virginia Tech (My team) and University of Virginia are hard to beat anywhere on the East coast. It gets down right serious but when the shooting back a few years ago happened UVA fans really showed alot of heart towards the VT community.

Good thing about living in the US is that once the match is over you can get some peace.

That explains everything. ;)

I'll never forget, right after 9/11 there was a game at Fenway, and Red Sox fans were holding a huge sign that said 'WE ARE ALL YANKEES'. Wow.
