DirecTV Receiver with ATSC Tuner

I recently acquired a 57" HDTV Monitor (No Tuner). I have a DirecTV dish that only points to the 101 satellite (No HD) and a D10 Receiver. I am not interested in upgrading my dish, I would just like to get my local channels in HD.

What my options are for older receivers that are still supported by DirecTV that have ATSC Tuners? I was hoping to pick something up off ebay for cheap.

Any insight is appreciated.

Unfortunately the D10 doesn't support the AM21 HD OTA tuner so you are really left with either finding a previously owned H20 (that comes with a HD tuner) or purchasing a HD receiver at BestBuy or online. With the second option you will have to play the TV input shuffle to switch between OTA-HD & your DTV service & the OTA locals won't show up in the DTV guide. If you try to purchase a H20, make sure to get the serial number & access card number & call DTV to verify it is indeed "owned" & no outstanding balance exists.

I have a H20 that I used long ago, but I thought that it did integrate into the D* line up like they do today, but maybe not, it's been ages since I used it.

My son had a similar situation as your. He bought a standalone atsc tuner at Fry's in Phoenix for the locals. As pointed out programing won't show up on your guide.

You could pick up a used H10 or HR10-250 receiver. One is a standard HD receiver and the other is a Tivo DVR. Both would allow you to pickup your locals via OTA but will not get any of the MPEG4 HD channels via Directv.

Best Buy doesn't have Directv receivers in their stores anymore, and why should the OP buy an HD receiver if he has no plans to upgrade his dish?

My H20 was able to integrate the OTA channels into the guide, but you might want to check the user manual of the receiver you're looking to buy at directv.com.

Very good idea. Also, if you get one of the older receivers, you will probably have to get a new access card before you can activate it on your account...

You may have to use what is called a modulator depending in how many inputs your HD monitor has.

You will need an antenna to pick up your locals.

Select a channel....3 or 4 to feed the SD from Directv.

Regarding the OTA feed from your antenna...it depends on what else your monitor has............it will display the HDTV signal...but may not be able to tune for each HD channel you will receive.

It is possible to use what are called diplexers to join the feed from your dish and your antenna using the same cable. Feeds from the dish and the OTA antenna connect to the diplexer outside. They share the same cable to the TV & DTV receiver and come out of the diplexer (looks like a splitter) in a single rg6 line to your TV.

Again it depends on the capabilities of your monitor. You may have to use a modern TV with the ATSC tuner installed to avoid changing the Dish for HD locals.

You are in the right place. Someone else may have another insight. I'll watch too.

I have an H20 that Directv told me to keep when I upgraded to a new HR24. It's yours for the shipping if you want it. PM me and I will send you the serial number so you can contact Directv to make sure they will let you use it.

How much did that TV cost? I remember a guy back in 2003 bragging about is HD ready big screen, yet was too cheap to buy an OTA tuner, or get cable or satellite. He just wanted to stretch SD movies on the thing.

It's like all of these bars and hotel advertising HD screens, but only paying of SD content.

The H10 wont get you any HD from D* since its MPEG2....just the locals in HD
I forget since I dont have it hooked up but I think the H10 will actually scan the channels in and not like the AM21 which loads all the locals from your DMA into it whether you can get them or not

I was talking about purchasing any HD tuner box that were offered by the Government via voucher a while back & now can be purchased at Best Buy or online....sorry for the confusion. Many of the original HD sets (mostly Plasma's) were sold as monitors only including my favorite TV, a 34 inch Sony KV-34XBR910 (Picture Tube...Yikes). It's huge, takes up a lot of room & is a dinosaur but I love the tube quality & all the speakers they jammed into the damn thing including it's own sub-woofer. [/quote]

After re-thiking about that, I also have a H10, I think that was the one that didn't integrate the guide, or maybe it's the Sony HD100 thats also collecting dust.

The 1st HD's I got were that way.

I'd make you an offer for that puppy if we lived in the same state if only for the spare parts. I've seen them on Ebay/Craigs List (pretty cheap) but I'd want to start with a working TV. Interesting note: They stopped production of the Tubes & thought they could get away with not supporting the product anymore via any parts you might need to fix it. The Attorney General in LA, California stepped in & told them they needed to support the product for ten years or they were coming after them. Costly repair, Yes; still enjoy the set though even though the repair Tech thought I was nuts for fixing it.

Thanks. It seems like the H20 is the best way to go. Another question I had was if I were to ever cancel my DTV service, would the tuner still work by itself without DTV service?

if you own the H20 it will work but you do need a connection to the satellite. Before I got a AM21 for my R22 I had used an old deactivated H10 for OTA. Worked as long as there is a sat connection. You get 100,200,201 and 600 (sports schedule channel) but it still worked great for OTA

No, the unit doesn't work as a stand-alone OTA tuner if you discontinue service. Either jump on Raul's very generous offer or buy a OTA tuner from a retailer....I think they are around $50.

edit: If it stays connected to the Sat it will work according to the poster above me. I had heard that it wouldn't but the guy above me knows more about this stuff than I so go with his advise.
