Two DVRs - my remote operates both at the same time

Just got my DirecTV set up today. I ordered two HD DVRs so I can record more than two shows at once. (We had Uverse before and I got spoiled because we could record three or four at the same time.) We only have one TV. Both DVRs are plugged into the one TV - one with HDMI and one with the red, green, blue cables. It all seems to be working fine.

However, when I use the remote it operates both DVRs. So if I try to set up one DVR to record certain shows and the other to record other shows I can't seem to do it. Whatever I set up to record on one DVR sort of gets set up on the other one. I say "sort of" because some of the shows were set up on both, and some of the shows were close but not the same (like a show on the same network, but not the same exact show). Very weird.

This is kind of defeating the purpose of having two DVRs. I want to be able to control them both separately and do that easily. I am pretty sure I can make it work by unplugging one of them and only plugging it in when I need it, but that's going to be a hassle and I'll have to remember when I need it plugged in.

DirecTV called to see how satisfied I was with my install and I told them about this issue, so a guy from the "local office" called and I explained the situation to him. He said I should move one of the DVRs to another location in the room because that way the remote wouldn't be pointing at it. But the install guys told me the remotes can operate the DVRs even through walls, so I don't think moving the DVR a few feet is going to make much difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work? Thanks for any help.

set up one to operate on AV1 or AV2
turn one off
on the other press
menu
select setup (press OK)
then system setup (press OK)
then remote control (press OK)
receiver mode (press OK)
change to AV1 and follow the directions

I have both my R22's in the same room

There's a way to change to a different address for multiple receivers in the same room. I can't remember how right now but if I find it, I'll post it.

set up one to operate on AV1 or AV2
Sorry, by "one" do you mean the remote? I see a thing at the top that you can slide back and forth. Right now it's on the DirecTV symbol - in fact, they both are set that way. But it also has AV1, AV2 and TV. Or do you mean the DVRs? If so, how do I do that?

set up one of the DVR's to operate on AV1 or AV2...I posted the info above

One of my R22's operates on the DIrectv mode, the other on AV1 only

Oh, okay. I misunderstood what you wrote. I thought I was supposed to set it for AV1 or AV2 first and then do the rest of the stuff in the list. Thanks. I'll give that a try.

If I put one on AV1 or AV2, can the other be on DirecTV, or does one need to be on AV1 and the other on AV2?

Yes.

put one on directv and one on AV1 and dont change it
(after you program it)
Do I have to physically move the little sliding thing at the top of the remote to AV1 for the one I switch to AV1 or do I just leave it on the DirecTV symbol?

Once I've done this, do I have to label the remotes to use the right one with the right DVR? Can I use just one remote for both DVRs?

Edit: I've changed one remote, but the other one still works on both DVRs. Do I need to change it to AV2 or something?

If you keep 2 remotes there slide the one to AV1 and leave it

you can use the same remote for both. Me I use 2 remotes (but then I live alone)

You have to set up both remotes then to work with AV1 if you do option 2 (one remote for both units)

Okay, I'm feeling particularly dumb. This doesn't seem to be working at all. (I am operating on four hours sleep/night for the last five days, so that may be part of it.) But I programmed the first remote with one of the DVRs, but it still seems to work with the other one. I left the thing you slide on the top on the DirecTV. Is that the problem? I tried moving the slide over the AV1 and now it only seems to bring up the TV menu, not the DirecTV menu. UGH. What am I doing wrong? Do I have to slide it to AV1 first BEFORE I try to program it?

On your instructions above, after:

then remote control (press OK)

I don't get:
receiver mode (press OK)

The options that come up are Program Remote, Copy Settings or Reset Remote. I did Program Remote or Reset Remote - can't remember. I had to press Mute and Select and a light flashed and then I had to enter a code and then more lights flashed. Those were the instructions on my screen. Then I programmed it with my TV and I thought I programmed it as AV1.

OK I goofed but I'll give you the shortcut ;)

when you are in the remote control screen in the menus select "receiver mode"
your options say "receiver mode Directv" or AV1 & AV2
select AV1
slide the remote switch to AV1
press "select" (yellow buton) and "mute" at same time until light blinks twice on top
let go and press 00001. Remote blinks twice
try the remote. If it doesnt respond press select and mute again and try 00002
repeat...if nothing continue on using 00003 up to 00007 to see if it works

My R22 uses 00003 (just tried it)

When I follow your directions, everything works. Then when I select Remote Control, the only options are:
Program Remote
Copy Settings
Reset Remote

I don't see anything that says "Receiver Mode." What am I missing? Is something not right with my set up yet? I'm pretty sure I'm doing what you are saying. Here's what I did:
Select Menu on the remote,
then Parental, Fav's & Setup (that's the only Setup I see)
then System Setup
then Remote Control

But there's nothing about "receiver mode". If I select "Program Remote" then I get Setup AV1, Setup AV2, Setup TV and Advanced. I think I chose "Setup TV" but I don't even think I'm in the right place now.

My system seems different from what you're describing.

Ok let me add a little confusion to it. I have 2 hr24s stacked on top of each other. I have one remote/receiver set to rf mode. I started with just that receiver. When I got second one in and installed, I use it with it's remote in ir mode.

But most of the time I use the iPad app to control them with.

LOL. Well I don't have an iPad so at least I can't add that bit of confusion.

How do I know if the receiver/remote is set to RF or IR?

Buy a rf capable rf (RC65RX) remote. Program it in rf mode to control DVR 2. Leave the first remote and DVR in ir mode. Or get two rf remotes. With each remote in rf mode, program one remote to control one dvr, and program the second remote to control the second dvr.

I just got the system installed today. I am using the remotes they gave me. I don't know what kind they are. They don't seem to be backlit.

I just did a little experiment, I left one remote in ir mode, it controls the DVR in the den. I programmed the second remote in rf mode, it controls the DVR in the bedroom. The den remote does not interfere with the bedroom remote and vise versa.
