Is 74W kaput?

I know there was a post where 74W is going to be moving east (like way east...over Europe) but tonight the 24/7 data card doesnt show up

I assume this doesnt show up for anyone else? Wonder if 74W is leaving? (It was fine yesterday)

they were booked on other intelsat capacity in the arc. Full time signals mostly moved to 91 and 99.

74w was a good sports feed bird right? How do they move them? Do they hook another satellite up to it and tow it or do they have rockets on them or something?

at one time it was but that was a few years ago
it seems like it goes through cycles on what is considered the "feed" bird. Right now it seems to be 91 & 85

Thrusters on the satellite move the satellite into a slightly non-geosynchronous orbit and the satellite drifts at a different rate than geosync sats that it passes by on its journey. Once it gets near its new orbital location, thrusters fire again to put the sat back into geosynchronous orbit. Someone from Intelsat said the satellite's lifetime is only shortened by 2 weeks when a orbital location change is done so it must not take that much fuel to get the bird into a slightly different orbit to move it.

yes, the data tp's moved to 91. The significant newsgathering to 99.

Sports feeds seemed to have been rebooked on 91, 99 or 123 (or maybe even some decided to cancel their Intelsat booking and go with Echostar on 85 since that bird has been hopping just after first word from Intelsat came about Horizons-2 relocation).

Election 2012 should be interesting with the capacity we've lost recently. I bet a lot of the feeds are going to be awful skype quality since sat capacity won't be as plentiful.

Doesn't take much of a change in orbit to do this. Seems like they target a shift of maybe 2 degrees a day over the ground. If the sat is pushed a bit higher the earth moves quicker relative to the sat so the sat moves west over the ground, if lower then the sat is falling quicker than the earth rotates under it so it moves east relative to the ground (but the orbit decays over time). The risk with any move is moving into an orbit that may encounter space junk.
