New dish customer Hate the User Interface

I didn't set out to be the poster boy for not remembering the yellow-# shortcuts (this one for OTA setup) at all, especially after formatting them from a dishsupport posting for an EKB 922 tips page. Another win for the "ugly" numbered menu, at least for those who will use the numbers.

i am a new dish customer and i am happy so far. started 11/1/12 had direct for 14 years.

i signed up to watch the programing NOT the guide.

really don't see the big deal here.

Thanks for adding some common sense to this!

Why can't customers cancel when Dish misleads so egregiously? There should be a law against this. At LEAST give this guy a 922!
There is...in California anyway. Here, a consumer has 30 days to cancel these sorts of contracts without penalty (Cell phone, Cable, Gyms, etc.) It almost makes up for paying 4 times what the same house would cost anywhere else.

Very few here will be sympathetic. I started a thread a few weeks ago about the weaknesses of the Dish technology stack and pointed out the archaic user interface, and how it just doesn't compare to the state-of-the-art being set by DirecTV, Apple, and TiVO. I was resoundingly rebuked and told that the UI of the system doesn't matter, so this this thread should be fun to watch. :)
And, you turned out to be correct. The Dish apologists are out in full force, it seems. They're almost as bad as Apple fanboys.

I didn't read every post. Were there any of the obligatory "don't let the door hit you in the ass" replies?

Just ordered and had a new 722K installed yesterday

I spoke with sales last week and they walked me thru the process i explained that i was coming from a newer model TIVO with comcast and wanted a nice user interface they showed me a few screenshots from there web site. so i moved forward with the sale. they installed in yesterday and i started to play around with it last night. and i cannot believe how bad the UI looked it was 3 year old look and feel.

It wasnt what i was shown on by there sales person.

i reached out to customer support and spoke with there exec support person. and explained my concerned they didnt seem to understand my concern.

apprently the screen shots are from the 922 which is no longer aval.

so i requested to cancel my service. they would not do it without me paying a early cancellation fee. Remember i have only had the dish for a few hours.

so not a happy camper!

Just my rant.

any thoughts comments ???
You are correct. It look like crap. Wait until you get a load of the OnDemand UI. Holy DOS 3.0 Batman!

But, word on the street is that the upcoming Hopper/Joey system will be available to existing subs for a reasonable upgrade fee in the coming weeks. So, if you hold on until late Feb early March, you should be able to step up to a modern-day system.

I think it has been established many times in many threads and many posts that the 722 interface isn't the best, but FAR from the worst. If you look at my post ( http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-ne...stomer-hate-user-interface-3.html#post2761127 ) you'll see that most DVR systems don't look much better. TiVo is far from a "state-of-the-art" interface. DirecTV's guide looks prettier than the 722 interface but not as good as 922/Hopper/Joey. 722 also has better functionality (IMHO) which, to me, means a lot more than eye candy.

If I want eye candy, I'll just get on my $1500 computer with an i7 2600K @ 4.3GHz, 560 Ti SLI, 12GB 1600MHz DDR3. Beats the hell outta any set-top box, but since the 722 has more functionality (when it comes to DISH Network,) I usually prefer it for TV, and the computer for games (which is what I built it for.)

Level-headed response. If you're not bashing E* at every turn, you run the risk of being labeled a fanboy or apologist on here. But only in a general indirect cowardice way, not a direct accusation. :D

If somebody defends the Dish UI, they are at the very least a Dish apologist, and at worst a fanboy.
You may personally be willing to put up with the antiquated design. But, that does not mean that it isn't, in fact, antiquated.
Simply stated in a level-headed way.

I had the same concern. After a month with Dish, I realize the functionality is much more important than the UI. It'd be nice to get an update one day, though.

If we're going to play this game, then in this case this either makes you at the very least ignorant, and at worst a troll. You even admitted that you didn't even read all the posts, yet you are calling out "apologists" and "fanboys" left and right. You're just pushing out generalizations about people who are of a certain opinion that just so happens to be different than yours. Nobody said it's the most up-to-date interface. The fact of the matter is that there are plenty of interfaces out there that are comparable or even worse than the 722 interface.

Not that it matters, hell you just proved to me that even when I show comparison pictures, you're still going to label me as an apologist/fanboy because I think that the 722 interface is comparable to other systems and I "defend" the "Dish UI." At the end of the day it doesn't really matter to me what your opinion is on the matter as you don't bother to read posts anyway.

So it's down right ugly and isn't what he was expecting? to me and I suppose only me i'd have a better reason to cancel the service than just because the ui isn't pretty enough for me. All the other features of the 722k are superior to everyone elses dvr.

I'm sorry, I just don't see what the problem is ... after nine years I upgraded from the old 301/508 interface to the 211k, which is similar, if not exact to the OP's 722k and I think it's a HUGE improvement. We could go back to the old green user interface from the model 2700 with its 'retrieving program information from satellite ... please wait or cancel' screen if that would make the OP happy.

Be grateful for what you have ... it's just TV ... it shouldn't affect your enjoyment of 'The Real Hooker Housewives of Whatever County.'

If it impacts you that much, find a new hobby.

Feeling the love yet?

To me, it's not a question of how antiquated the look of the UI is, it's a question of priorities. The UI works, and it's relatively quick compared to other provider's UIs I've seen. I place more importance on the programming content than the Dish UI. Probably because I spend a helluva lot more time watching content than worrying about how old the menus look...

The only thing antiquated is your ideas on this IMO.

Grow up. The UI is nothing if you can't tune in anything. If you can, what you tune in is what you want and not how pretty it is getting there. The UI works. Just hope your satellite service and channels work and that it is set up so you can get the best picture. Soem people do not know how to set receivers up to match their TV's. And some people think widescreen is HD. And that the $499 EHD set is HD. Worry about that end and not what the UI looks like. Perhaps the guide was set to large and not small.

Think the easiest and quickest way to improve our guide would be to add a "colors options" in the Menu. You can change colors now by selecting different favorites lists, but to be able to change colors I believe would make alot of subscribers happy?

What do you think?.;)

You are fascinated with small, shiny objects, aren't you? Admit it. :D
