Play (EHD) movies on a used VIP722 if cancel dish service & returning original?

I'll probably have to cancel my Dish subscription for affordability reasons - so I'll be required to return the VIP722, I assume. To keep watching the shows I recorded on my external USB drive, can I buy a used VIP722 somewhere (locally or via eBay), and continue to watch those saved movies after returning my original 722? If so, is there anything I must do (e.g. add the "new" 722 to my account, and THEN cancel the account & send the original receiver back)?
Is my only choice to keep the original Vip722k and pay their non-return fee? How much will they charge for that?

The (any) 722 MUST be active on your active account if you cancel service you will lose access to the EHD.

And I might add that the receiver must be locked onto a Dish satellite. My first camping trip with a vip and ehd I thought I'd watch a movie from the ehd the first night and put up the dish next morning. The ehd wouldn't work until I put the dish up next day. So if you buy a used 722 activate it and get it coupled with your ehd then move the recordings to the 772's drive from the ehd. There you can play them even if there is no satellite connected or long after you've left Dish.

As stated, service must be active on the receiver. You can downgrade to the welcome pack.

Any chance you can view recordings if the account is paused?

If your receiver is leased then you will either have to switch to the cheapest package (Welcome Pack) or do without your recordings. Another option is to copy the recordings manually via DVD recorder or whatever other means.

Or buy a used 722 or 612 and activate it.

Doubtful, especially for the EHD. Not sure how long internal recordings would be watchable.

That would work temporarily for internal recordings, but the EHD will cease to work when the account is canceled. The DVR will temporarily play internal recordings, however the receiver will deactivate itself eventually and the recordings will no longer be available.

That implys a receiver has an internal calendar watch and even though there is nothing from a phone line or satellite to tell the receiver a long period of time has passed and it isn't authorized that it "knows" to lock up. I don't believe that is the case. I think when it boots up it has no idea what time it is or what day or even what year it is. It is totally dependant on a signal from a Dish satellite to know what the situation is. And I know wth no dish connected the recordings will play on a Vip612.

Sent from my Toshiba Thrive using SatelliteGuys

It has been posted, through experience, that after a certain period without a satellite connection to verify active account status, the DVR and EHD will shut down. IIRC it was approx 2 weeks. It depends upon when the account was cancelled. So you can disconnect your STB from the dish, and then cancel, and still lose access to recordings some days later, depending upon when the last "hit" so to speak, came from the satellite. Doesn't need to know exact day. Just elapsed hours, is my guess.

NOW- which version is accurate? And does the answer depend upon model, or ViP vs non-ViP? I hope someone, DIRT or otherwise, will present a definitive answer.

same here, but seriously doubt they will say "Sure, unhook the satellite and phone/ethernet line first, then call to cancel."
Yup, I suppose that info is keep fairly confidential. And I was amazed to see navychop's post about hearing that it ever has happened. Would have never guessed the designers were that paranoid.

Rereading this I see that this is about a guy trying to steal service and having a dish connected. Trying that and leaving it in standby at night might allow an elapsed timer to trigger.

I was proposing a guy just have a VIP sitting (unplugged now sounds prudent) and firing it up just to watch his recordings. I inferred it was just going to a short time thing until he had seen everything on the drive.

It's called a clock... lol... Computers have kept time WAY before satellite/Internet access was available. Yes, it can keep the time even when unplugged from power. That's what batteries are for...

But have you actually seen one of these clocks in a Dish set top box?

And what, besides stopping bad people from watching recorded videos, are they for?

Doesn't the satellite deliver the current time continually?

And if it isn't receiving a signal from a Dish sat, who cares what the box is doing?

Yep, this is a big problem that I and probably others didn't think thoroughly about before investing time and money in the EHD technology. EHD will let you keep your recordings indefinitely, but at the cost of being a Dish subscriber for life.

If I ever decide I want to not be a Dish customer anymore, I have to either be ok with all of that archive going *poof*, or archive it to more permanent, non-DRM protected storage, or obtain it in a different format. On the plus side, I would have a bunch of hard drives freed up to do something else with!

I thought of it not too long after but it was ultimately OK with me. I'm not a churner kind of customer and will be a Dish customer for life, for better or worse. And when I'm done with Dish I'll be done watching TV too because I'll taking a long, long, long nap.

But when they're wrong I reserve the right to call them every bad name I can think of (kind of like what my wife does to me ).
