Questions about The Hopper?

Sweet! I can finally get rid of my Phonex adapter (currently on my 2nd 722K). But if two Hoppers can't see each other at first how will the caller ID info get to the second Hopper?

Plug both in.

Or wait for full integration. I will.

I'm getting lost going through all of the threads. Scott- Has Dish "revisited" the "No-Hopper and VIP cohabitation" rule? I know that you said they were listening and considering. Are there any updates? From what I've seen on the Boards, I think that issue will impact the decision for many.

If I upgrade to the hopper, I would continue to set a manual timer that runs from 8:00pm to 11:00 pm (3hours), to catch the two shows I watch on Sundays: Good Wife and Csi Miami. I don't think that the PTAT feature will work for show over runs due to sports. Even if it does capture the shows ,it will probably not work with the right title for each show. You might get half of your show on one show and the rest on another. Since this affects only one night, I can see just relying on my manual timer to make sure that all my shows are on one recording.

So if you don't receive your locals in HD then PTAT will not work and I'll have to use my Hopper like the 722? Not a major problem, since in the end i'll go from two tuners to six tuners but still would of liked the feature.

So for areas without full hd locals, the hopper would have less tuners than the 722k does with both sat and ota tuners: 4. So unless DISH plans on getting the rest of the country up in hd , the hopper will not be suitable for everyone, especially if they are power users.

Correct, we have been saying that for awhile now. Hopper is not for everyone.

2 questions...

1) If you switch to another tuner that someone else is watching do both people have control of the tuner???

2) I want to add an additional joey in the future...will up to 3 joeys still be free still in the summertime??? (not sure if anyone would know this ? though)

Thanks in advance

CBS routinely delays 60 minutes and subsequent programming on Sundays when a sporting event that is well outside the "primetime" hours runs late. We supposedly know they will extend the time if a sports event is inside the primetime window, but are not sure what happens if a 4pm ET ball game runs to 7:45 ET, therefore delaying the entire lineup.

?? I recorded CSI Miami on CBS with a 30 minute pad for the entire last football season and never failed to get the full show.

If you sign up for the Hopper right away and then want to add a Joey later you will have to follow the Upgrade rules. If it's your first upgrade in 12 months then you should be able to add a Joey for free and just pay the tech visit fee.

Now, if you are upgrading to the Hopper next month and then want to add a Joey a few months later, you may not be able to do it. I'm not sure how Dish is going to handle it since a customer is only suppose to be able to upgrade once every 12 months.

I have DTV, looking to switch, but DISH doesn't have my locals in HD. I only have 2 TVs, would it make sense for me to get the hopper/joey since the PTP won't be available to me? Will PTP work if/when they start HD service in my area?

Also, any idea when that might be? :(

One more thing -- in the wiring diagrams, it looks like the hopper needs an ethernet connection. Is it not wireless? That may be an issue, since my router is upstairs...

The Hopper can either be wired directly with an ethernet cable, use an optional wireless adapter or use the Hopper Internet Connector.

We are still waiting for many answers from the "Questions" thread. Dish seems a tad busy right now.... ;)

Scott,

Any idea when Dish will answer our questions? I am at the point of doing design trades for a 2-Hopper/4-Joey cabling architecture. It sure would be nice to know if Hoppers run any hotter than 722Ks, so I would know whether one Hopper would have sufficient cooling inside a console where a 722K has been for several years. I would rather not place a Joey at that primary HDTV location because that location would then lose PIP functionality.

The first Hopper is free. The first Joey is $7. You'd pay $7 in equipment fees, $6 DVR fee, $4 whole house fee. Plus programming pkg & taxes. For one TV, I couldn't see a Hopper. At two, it starts to be something to consider, depending upon what features you want. There's a lot more than just PTAT. You'll have the shared DVR space, centralized control (you can pause the action at the Joey even though it does not have a local DVR), new EPG & UI, etc. But yes, if you later got HD locals, PTAT could be turned on - by you.

Dish keeps close to the vest on when/if HD locals are coming to any given area.

but it was my understanding that the internet connection is not a necessity, just a luxury. This is satellite after all, not U-Verse.

That is true. Just like current receivers I don't believe you have to have the receiver connected to the internet.

Scott,

Any idea when Dish will answer our questions?
Any idea when Dish will answer our questions?[/QUOTE] I got a note from them about 2 hours ago saying they are hoping to respond to them tonight so if they send them to me earlier enough I will have the answers online tonight, or sometime tomorrow morning. :)

I have a feeling a number of questions you guys had didn't have answers yet. :D
