Is there any possibility Directv is playing hardball? Just for the fact that they came out and said what Pappas was demanding. Which was double the Annual Fees and to be paid a years worth of those fees in advance. But haven't even given a clue to what Tribune wants.
What programming are you talking about? CLTV? That isnt exclusive to cable. Anyone can get it. I think the satellite companies havent negotated for it sence it became avaliable to all. It also isnt produced by comcast, CLTV is produced by WGN.
What WGNO, a local ABC affiliate in New Orleans, said on facebook:
"The truth is that we NEVER had a deal with DirecTV, handshake or otherwise, on Thursday or any other day. Look at DirecTV’s history in these types of negotiations. They put their subscribers in the middle. Just three months ago, blackouts threatened NFL playoffs and Golden Globes."
I am not sure if the one above is "scripted." However, I would think this one is:
"Tribune Broadcasting's contract with DirecTV expired at midnight, Saturday, March 31. A new agreement has not been reached. By federal law, without an agreement in place, DirecTV cannot carry the signal of Tribune's local television stations including WGNO and WNOL.
"This situation is extremely unfortunate," said Nils Larsen, Tribune Broadcasting president. "We don't want anyone to lose the valuable programming we provide, but we simply cannot get fair compensation from DirecTV and we cannot allow DirecTV to continue taking advantage of us."
DirecTV has never compensated Tribune for the rebroadcast of its television stations and Tribune is asking for an agreement that is similar to those that DirecTV already has in place with hundreds of other broadcasters and program providers."
WGNO also added:
"Heard DirecTV is offering cash back to keep subscribers from cancelling. Call 855-526-WGNO and find out."
A fan of WGNO posted that it was a $5 credit.
WNOL, the sister station of WGNO and the local CW affiliate of New Orleans, posted this on their facebook:

CLTV is exclusive to cable, it's not OTA or on Satellite. Only two cable providers carry it, and when it first rolled out, it was exclusively Comcast, in a deal between them and Tribune. There were huge marketing campaigns for people to go Comcast to get CLTV when it first rolled out. Ok, and sorry on wording, the primary carrier of it is Comcast, RCN picks it up off them, in I suspect some deal that benefits Comcast more.

I know that Iceberg. They stated the irony behind not getting their local fox station on DirecTV, but NASCAR having a banner ad on FOX. I was telling him that FOXhad the ad, not his local station, which is owned by Tribune.
Sounds like he's saying that if Satellite wanted it, they could bid for it. If they broadcast their signal through satellite, both companies have the option try to pick it up.
It's never been open for bid to anyone else, and I seriously doubt it will ever be, as it is something Comcast put together way back as a sales tool. They pitched it to Tribune, not the other way around, and put together a huge subscriber campaign when it first rolled out. It only very recently came to RCN cable after a ridiculously long drawn out process. Comcast has a standing contract that pretty much guarantees them exclusivity for cable to nearly the entire Chicago area, and they are always looking for any angle to lockout other providers, especially satellite that they have no legal way to block.
And that was my point, in that it wouldn't surprise me that they have some influence at Tribune in this mess. Comcast has got to be jumping for joy over there at this lockout.
CLTV pre dates comcast and was on more then 1 cable system when it went live. CLTV is open to any system that wants to add it. primary carrier of it is Comcast, RCN picks it up off them, in I suspect some deal that benefits Comcast more. NOT TRUE and RCN has CLTV HD Comcast does not.
I wish one day they would abolished retransmission-consent regme, the consumers are the victims.
One self-correction I would make, is back then the Comcast I'm referring to was called AT&T Broadband, before Comcast swooped in and locked up most of the area buying them and the other smaller providers.

And this is still just a distracting minor point in the fact of Tribune trying to squeeze DTV, which if it succeeds, all the other locals will join the bandwagon, and guess who'll then be paying for it? Sure won't be DTV and I don't expect them to. What we pay for now with the locals is the hardware and tech support to get local tv into DTV's system, not the programming itself. To me, Tribune's crossing a line with this in insisting we pay for broadcast tv programming that supposed to be already advertiser paid for.

I guess I was wrong on this one. I am not sure how long this will last. they usually don't last long but this one is certainly a bit odd.
It's Tribune, 'odd' is pretty much the normal operating day for them. They've already fully screwed up what used to be the untouchable radio station in the Chicago area, a newspaper that is a shade of its former self, and they're running the tv local in a similar direction, and now this mess... :/

NECN is in a similar situation. Comcast owns the channel, but the channel pre dates Comcast's operations in New England. Other cable providers offer the channel. That doesn't mean satellite can't get it. It means that for whatever reason satellite,and Comcast haven't made a contract to put it on satellite.
Comcast usually will not allow any of thier channels on Sat if they have anything to say about it.
Just the way they are.
Huh imagine that. guess Direct Tv didn't get the job done after all. its all good though, That would have given Direct Tv an excuse to raise there prices
