OSD on Denon receiver not showing up after last directv update

Well, the Directv software update contains drivers for different media devices that work with the DVR. Like anything I would imagine that somebody had the wrong driver, or no driver for the last SW update. There will be another one sometime later, but until then you will be facing this issue.

It would be nice to be able to have our reports go to the right place at Directv, so they can fix this asap. I'll call Directv and take a shot at it in a little while just to say I tried. You never know.

Update: Called Directv and got someone who didn't really know where to go, other than to tell me to go to Directv.com forums and see if I can get to the right department. I haven't been there, so I don't know exactly what she was talking about. I let her go after a few minutes of figuring out she wasn't going to be helpful. Maybe I'll try again later. It's sometimes a crap shoot on how helpful a rep can be.

I am having the same problem and have been searching for answers. I have DIRECT TV HR21/700 WITH LATEST SOFTWARE UPGRADE MAY 30TH AT 3AM 0x5cd. I also have DENON AVR-2112CI RECIEVER with latest software downloaded the other day. Not sure what software because its not letting me view menu at this time. My current problem is that I cant see volume or menu on TV. I can view it on reciever. It is very sparatic, at times I can view volume and reciever menu at times I cant. I have called DENON THREE times and did everything from all the resets to resets on Direct TV. It will work for a little bit and then back to not showing up on screen... DENON told me to take it to my local DENON repair shop and to get them to rollback the firmware update. Apparently there is a GUI issue. After reading here Im not sure if it is a DENON issue now as they both updated the same day and they both started having problem right after update. My original update with DENON RECIEVER stalled out and I had to turn reciever off. I then was able to download update later that day and thats when I had issues... REALLY confused as you all are.... I wish DENON had a rollback device of some sort like a computer. maybe update had glitch.... or maybe direct tv update and denon update conflicted.... anyways as much as i dont want to im going to take it to local denon repair facility and have them rollback my firmware update and never update again! I am still under warranty, hope you all are to. I dont think its a direct TV issue. I wish I new how to roll back firmware update myself as disconnecting it is going to be a pain because of having to label all wires. By the way I have 1 HDMI going into LED TV and the rest of the HDMIs coming from DTV XBOX360 AND TV(OPTICAL) are going into DENON reciever, on all sources the volume isnt displaying. Reciever is acting funky too, slow sparatic, and not displaying volume or menu at times.

I've searched the other site and the Directv forum. I've concluded that if you are using a Denon AVR, HDMI does not work properly with the latest version of software for the DVRs. There are several posts on Direct's own forum about the problem. I suggest e-mailing Directv about the problem. Talking to a CSR on the phone will likely not result in a cure.

What exactly would you tell them besides the issue? They are completely usless in all other scenarios. Unless they know about this issue they will be dumbfounded. If anyone else has emailed DTV and have gotten a good result let me know. THX

So the issue is with the osd of the Denon not showing up via hdmi, yes? Everything else is working fine? All of you are connected from the Directv receiver/dvr via hdmi to your Denon, then by hdmi to your tv? Are you swapping component for hdmi from the Directv box to the Denon or from the Denon to the tv? My final question, is it REALLY an issue that you can't see the volume osd of the Denon on your tv or are there other displays that aren't showing up? I have a Yamaha and couldn't care less to see the volume bar on my tv. I just go by my ears.

Yes, that is the issue.

Yes, I am connected that way.

No, when you change audio codecs, that screen does not show up either. Although, that's not a feature I use very much with Directv. Mostly with Blu-ray's and such.

I do NOT have anything hooked up using component, HDMI only for everything.

Yes, it is REALLY an issue when your volume bar shows up on every other input other than the DVR input. Is it an issue I can live with, yes. Do I want to, no. Why wouldn't I want my volume bar, as opposed to not wanting it? Why does your car need to go above 65 Mph?

That analog makes no sense at all. I'm sure it's nice to see the volume bar on screen, but what does it really matter? Don't you set the volume by your ears?

It made sense to me. What does it really matter if your car can go over 65 Mph? It's only suppose to go that fast and no faster anyway. Yes, I could have come up with a way better one, but I'm not really trying to be a scholar.

Not sure why I'm trying to stick up for the position of having a working volume bar. With all due respect you sound like my father in law who always has something to try and put down another person for. He seems to not even realize he is doing this, as perhaps you are not either.

Anyway, back on topic hopefully.

I'm certainly not trying to put you down. Like I said, I'm sure having the osd working correctly is nice to have, but how important is it? The one on my Samsung shows but I don't even look at it. The one on my Mitsubishi doesn't show, and that's how I prefer it.

Thanks for the friendly reply. On the important list, I would rate a 2 out of 10. Annoyance list though is at least a 5. I look at mine all the time.

Ended up calling this afternoon. After the usual scripted resets, etc. I convinced the CSR to escalate my complaint to engineering. I had to point out that on Directv's own forum there are multiple users with HDMI problems and Denon AVRs after the latest update. She closed the the call by telling me I could call back if the problem was unresolved after 72 hrs. :) we'll see.

I called this week too and had a similar result but I wasn't given the 72 hour time limit though. One thing I have been seeing beyond the OSD issue is that the Denon receiver is reporting a change in resolution from the directv box. I have everything set to 1080i but sometimes it drops to 720p when changing stations or playing recordings. (And this is with the native option being off) I told the CSR this...but like you...none of the trouble shooting scripts work and they claimed to not have any known issues in their database.

SaMe issue

. Maybe 1 out of 10 times. Today, nothing.

I called Denon, and was told it wasn't a reported problem. The Denon supervisor told me that since it "followed" the input, it was most likely my HR22. He told me to call Directv and report as well. Not sure I wouldn't be wasting my time by doing that. It was also a waste to call Denon, since they just blamed Directv and told me to go to HDMI.com to learn about how the signal is passed.

Anyway, anyone else with a Denon receiver notice this rather annoying problem?[/QUOTE]

I am having the exAct same issue with my Yamaha receiver I took my old one in To best buy and they replaced it I get home Plug in the new one and it is not fixed same thing no osd! I am starting the blame direct tv

My HR34 has progressively gotten worse talking to my Marantz, which is the Denon's big brother. I finally just took it out of the chain, ran HDMI from the 34 to the plasma, and digi coax from the 34 to the Marantz. When I say has gotten worse, I mean as the 34 has been updated over the past few months. No issues with the ATV, the Roku, and multiple BR players. At times, with rez changes, is when it can really act funky.

I even had to change my boot order recently, because after an update, every power on was a pink tinted screen. EVERY.

I'm now having this issue with my Marantz AV7005. It was just off and on for a week but this week it been mostly off. I can switch inputs over to the AppleTV and the OSD comes back. Then if I switch back to DirecTV it also works. But at some point while on DirecTV it will quit working.

I'm beginning to miss the days if Dish networks buggy hardware and software....

What Im seeing, with comments in random threads over the last month, is something is going on handshake related with Denon/Marantz AVR's now. Something they have done, just have no idea what it is.

I don't know how often I have to post this before people believe me !!

This is a SOFTWARE BUG with the latest release of the software for the HR2x series, that screw up the signals going to a TV or A/V receiver over HDMI. Many TVs and A/V receivers don't have an issue with the changes that were made in the release, but some do (many Denon AVRs for sure, some Yamahas, and an assortment of TVs).
Temporary fixes include:
Setting native to off with only 720p resolution selected (works for some)
Setting native to off with only 1080i selected (works for a few)
Replacing the cable to the A/V receiver with component (red/green/blue) cables and optical audio

The latest beta software for the DVRs seems to fix the problem so hopefully it won't be long before a fix is available in a national release.
