DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

I'm not going to buy ad time for my denture cream during a show like the big bang theory or UFC on FOX.

Which is why you only see those ads during the Jay Leno show.

What is that I smell...... it's the sweet smell of vindication that this is an AMC issue, not Dish, not VOOM.

Does not prove anything other than its nothing new for networks and providers to have disputes over carriage fees.

Still waiting for you to post a link showing a network was suing DISH over a breach of contract [etc] and was treated like the ugly step-child [like DISH has treated AMC].

Charlie goes to Washington:
Dish Network CEO Blasts Broadcasters Over Retransmission Consent Tactics - Deadline.com

Isn't that in reference to ABC, CBS, NBC, etc? If so, can't say as though I can disagree with that. Those channels are broadcast free of charge to anyone with an HD antenna. Charging the providers is a BS, IMHO.

I hate these package deals the nets are trying to impose on the providers. It's like we're out for a five star dinner and being told that if you want the steak dinner you will also have to buy the chicken dinner and the seafood dinner.

The purpose of bundling is to put the provider between a rock and a hard place, and, even if you disagree, to reduce the price a provider pays as a whole.

Just for reference, here are the top 20 basic cable channels from last year:
2011 Basic Cable Ratings: USA Still On Top, History & FX Up, Nick At Nite & TBS Down - Deadline.com

I don't get how A&E and History can be in the top 10, or why any of those below AMC aren't being moved to where all the quality programming is.

If so, you might end up looking looking like your avatar before too long. Do something about that!!!

Ya, right?

I was up until August. I run a small business and health insurance is expensive. Although the economy didn't hurt me much at first, sales have gone down substantially beginning 2010. When it can cost as much as $175 for a doctor visit and $130/month for just one of my meds... it was either me or my son.

If you go, then what about your son??? Sounds to me you should have a lot more to worry about and work on than TV!

Its the cost of the meds. I have 2, total cost is $230/month, my son also has one @ $130/month. It was a choice of taking one of us off the policy, or go without one of my meds -- he is not going without.

I don't know your story but have you tried "Rxreliefcard.com"?
Or if you can.

No, but there is not a huge savings. My hypertension meds could cost me $10 for a 90 day supply at Walfart, but because my blood pressure was so high when I first started taking it [160/100], doc refuses to proscribe anything else. Even with meds, my systolic can still get as high as 145. Those "savings" cards don't save a whole bunch on my meds. The big issue is, with my insurance, as with most I guess, is the out of pocket expenses. They normally must meet/exceed the deductible b4 you qualify for a co-pay on the doctor visit. Its that balance between wanting a low deductible and a reasonable premium.

I normally try and check around once a year at switching policies and probably about time I start.

.

To your first response, lol that's 100% spot on.

To your second, I understand why. However, it is still a little maffia-esque. I'd go further but really don't want to drag a current event into this and break one of the rules of the forum.

Its a calculated risk on both providers parts. They save so many millions of dollars not carrying the network, and figure they will loose x number of customers, where as x number of customers will not do anything.

The calculated risk that they are counting on is that AMC nets will have to give in. And w/two MVPD's it is going to hurt AMC more than either of them. Also I would love to see D and several other cable co's give them the finger too.

Yes I'm tired of retransmission-consent disputes and people pointing fingers and calling them greedy. I wish the FCC would do something rather "Don't give a darn!" frown.

what would you suggest the fcc do? dictace pricing and who must carry what?
no thank you, keep the gov out of it

if anything the companies should carry every station out there, and let an ala-carte model decide what stays, whats in hd, and what station disapears

Just got this...

DISH to Replace AMC With Commercial-Free HD Movies

New Programming Also Slated to Replace IFC, WE

ENGLEWOOD, CO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/29/12 -- DISH (NASDAQ: DISH) will replace three AMC Networks channels -- IFC, WE and AMC -- tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. ET with what the company believes is stronger movie and entertainment content.

DISH will be providing HDNet Movies to replace AMC, and is offering Style and HDNet to replace WE and IFC.

"HDNet Movies and HDNet are exciting offerings for our customers," said Dave Shull, senior vice president of programming for DISH. "These are networks that will bring great entertainment, including first-run, commercial-free movies in high definition to our customers. DISH is the only pay-TV provider that did not raise its core package prices in 2012. We will continue to fight hard for choice, control, and value in home entertainment."

DISH notified AMC Networks earlier in the year of its decision not to renew its contract due to the channels' high costs compared to their relatively low viewership.

DISH's actions come as AT&T and AMC Networks negotiate over what AT&T this week called an "excessive rate increase."

"A significant portion of any pay-TV bill goes to fees for content providers like AMC Networks," said Shull. "AMC Networks requires us to carry low-rated channels like IFC and WE to access a few popular AMC shows.
The math is simple: it's not a good value for our customers."

AMC Networks has further devalued its programming by making its handful of popular shows available to consumers via iTunes, Netflix and Amazon.com.

"One of AMC's biggest historical draws has been movies. However, their performance has been trumped by other DISH movie offerings, including the many thousands of titles available on Blockbuster @Home and from top-quality providers such as HBO, Showtime, Starz, EPIX, MGM HD, IndiePlex, and RetroPlex," Shull said.

Beginning Saturday, HDNet Movies will be available on Channel 130, Style will be on Channel 128, and HDNet (soon to become a new entertainment and music channel called "AXS.TV") will run on Channel 131.

So we lose two SD channels and One Hd channel and gain three HD channels in their place. The only change for me is that I will have to wait till the season is over to watch my two AMC shows on Netflix.

Pretty sorry replacements if you ask me.With AT250 we gain one channel and lose 3.Don't think Hdnet has any original programming either.

Speaking of gov't, The 1996 Telecom Act is what started this mess in the first place. Allowing oligopoly ownership of multiple stations, media groups and studios is how the bundling and anti-ala-carte model persists. No ala-carte or true free-market competition will ever take place without some kind of govt interference.

Crap,

I was afraid it would come to this...How do I get this seasons walking dead  I'm month to month on Dish...Might be time to make a switch

1. Buy the DVDs/BRDs
2. Netflix/Hulu/Amazon/iTunes

The extra money you spend on those options above could possibly be saved by cord-shaving (temporarily dropping to a lower programming pack).

Or as you say, you could switch.
