DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

Walking Dead beats all of them in adults 18-49, which is what matters most.

Exactly!!! no one can say that doesn't matter. NBC canceled Harry's Law because of the 18-49 demo. It was their #2 program!

By the way The Walking Dead had gained viewers every week. So yes it is a Juggernaut. Some of you can laugh all you want. The sad thing is some of you are hoping these shows fail to prove a point. It's juts TV guys and it's not a sports team! So put away your Charlie Ergen Jerseys!

I know most of you care less but I was going to leave Direct and jump to Dish. The Hopper looks like one hell of a DVR. Dish dropped AMC and that was it for me. I will wait out and hopefully everyone will come to their senses.

Number two on NBC isn't saying much these days. :D

I Like the walking dead, but if I don't see it on Dish, I'll watch it on amazon using the credits that dish gave me. Either way, not worried.

Your right that's why people were shocked NBC cancelled it. They need all the viewers they can get. If I was already with Dish I would do that too. What about us though? You know the ones that want to be with Dish?

I know your not worried now but what if Charlie gets pissed and takes down a channel or two you love? My fear is that when I switch Charlie will take on ESPN(Which someone needs to do) and it goes black during college football season. I'm a huge college football fan. Losing that channel is a scary thought to some of us. Hell maybe even you.

Like anything else, I'll reevaluate on a case by case basis. Those that are interested in switching have to do their own evaluations and decide.

I don't think it's particularly fair to say that someone needs to take on Disney/ESPN but not be willing to support the provider that does. If no one supports the provider that does it, they sub losses will likely force the provider to capitulate. And that ultimately means that TV bills will continue to skyrocket.

For college football, I root for the school I went to and against our conference rivals. Aside from that, I'll catch a nationally televised game here and there on a whim. Since the odds of Dish picking up the PAC-12 network are slim to none, I'm most likely screwed. Bright side, I'll be at all the home games. And I'll figure something out for the road games.

Someone does need to challenge ESPN/Disney. Since they just signed $80 million a year contracts for the TV rights to the Rose Bowl and the Big12/Sec Bowl game through 2026, I am sure they will be asking for a big increase in fees, but you know I got through missing Big 12 games for a month on FX and FSN when Dish and Fox were grandstanding, so it won't really bother me to miss some games again. There are plenty of games on OTA each weekend.

Disney will soon have control of all the A&E networks, since the FTC has chosen not to challenge the sale and that will give them a huge monopoly over channels. They will really be monsters to negotiate with, once they have that big block of channels.

I really don't know why anyone would expect Dish to carry all the Pac12 nets when they can't even do 24/7 RSN's in HD yet.

Disney buying A&E networks? Hadn't heard that. Perhaps another reason Dish made the move they did?

With the Killing canceled and Breaking Bad ending next year, AMC needs to come up with some more original programming soon, or AMC won't be worth turning on.

A monopoly over their intellectual property?

It's called a vertical monopoly. Way back when, movie studios owned movie theaters and controlled their content which shut out small competitors. It was ruled a monopoly by every branch of government and studios were forced to divest themselves of the theaters (distribution). This is happening again with content owners buying up all the viable cable channels and even cable systems.

Yes, a monopoly is when someone owns too much of something that is sold. If they want to buy it all up and not sell it, then it's unlikely that anyone would cry foul or anti-trust.

But if you're gonna sell it, whether it be sugar, gas, Leave it to Beaver, or a gay kiss in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics... You can be guilty of breaking anti-trust laws if it's determined that you drove up the price without fair competition. I don't know all the ins and outs about monopolies, but I know enough to know that it can apply here.

Cheers

I would support them but college football is only on 4 months out of the year. I need those 4 months. I support one team too. I graduated from Ohio State and that's my team, but I love watching college football on ESPN all night long. I have Ohio State season tickets so the home games are covered for me too. It's just a scary thought to maybe be without ESPN for any amount of time because of a dispute.
