My HR24 receiver is flaky and keeps powering off on its' own. Called tech. support and they ended up sending me a new (to me) receiver. My wife records old movies and watches them after I go to bed, or when I'm not home. Is there any way to copy them from the old receiver to the new one when I do the swap?

bummer. The tech told me that I didn't need to return the old receiver; they don't want it back. She suggested I may be able to playback from the old receiver even tho the subscriber card is removed (need to return the old card). I am not sure I believe her.

I don't know why they wouldn't want a HR24 back, maybe older Hx2x models, but not the HR24. You can always send an email to check on that about returning the DVR itself & not just the card. I wouldn't get rid of the old HR24 until that is resolved.

That is weird that they don't want an HR24 returned.

i have 2 HR24-100 receivers. about 3 years ago when the bedroom receiver went bad, they sent someone out to replace it. this time the living room receiver went bad and they sent me a replacement and told me I did not to return the old one.

I would hang onto it and check back with them about it as well, before you eventually find a Non Return fee on your bill.
The HR24's are the top non Genie recvr out there, it would be surprising that they wouldn't want it back ...

In the mean time, if your wife wants to watch them movies, have her do it before you turn it off.
You can always keep the service going till shes done watching, if it is working enough to do that.

Also, if it is working and she wants to keep the movies, you can transfer them to another device, DVD, VHS whatever, but you'll have to do it as regular playback speed.

I called again this evening. again i was told they don't want it back. The new receiver did not come with a pre-paid return label. The instructions say if there is no pre-paid label then I do not need to return the receiver or the card. The instructions only way that they encourage me to return using the equipment recycle instructions on their web site.

You can recover your recordings if you're a premier customer, but you'll have to take the year of premier and pay the $50 claim fee.
It's always been my understanding that you don't have to return the IRD under certain circumstances:
1. You've had it for 2+ years.
2. It wont power on and it's 1.5+ years active.
3. It wont power on and it is refurbished.
4. It's owned (duh).
etc. etc.

I have never heard this before. I assume you have some proof of this claim?

I might be wrong on this one, but, can't you transfer your recordings to an external hard drive then transfer them to the new receiver?

No, on DirecTV recordings are tied to the receiver ID number (along with programming authorization from the access card number).

Moving a hard drive (external or even internal) to another DirecTV receiver (regardless of model - even if the same) will not have any playable content. The recordings will show in the list, but will be unplayable.

I've never read of anyone being able to keep recordings from a dead or retired receiver, no work around.

There are ways to copy recordings off a failing hard drive, but they would still only plan in the same receiver they were recorded from.

Eventually - the right fix for this would be to tie recordings to the account instead of the receiver, which would leave an external drive playable if a DVR dies and is replaced. I imagine this is a content provider issue because there hasn't even been a hint of anything like that ever happening.

The only one I know that offers the copy service from old unit to new unit is weeknees and it's pricey, but that's about it.

I was planning to get two external hard drives, one for my DirecTV Genie and the other for my TiVo Roamio for my antenna for extra storage space. Would external hard drives allow that on both devices?

Does directv have any owned equipment anymore? I know years ago after you got service you owned the equipment.

Yes on the Genie, I don't know for the Tivo. The Genie has a 1 TB hard drive in it. I'd be cautious about anything larger. It's too tempting to use the dvr as a storage device instead of a time shifter. You run the risk of losing many recordings with a failure of some kind.

Some, but not many. Virtually all of the new equipment is leased unless you get it from a Directv employee, then it may be owned. To find out, get the RID and contact the access card department.
