6 TV locations. Whole home with one Genie 44 & 3 mini clients + one HD-DVR + one regular HD reciever. Total of 8 tuners I believe. I ordered an upgrade of the regular HD receiver up to an HD-DVR for $99.00

They arrived yesterday and all was going well until during authorization it wouldn't recognize the second tuner on the HD-DVR. Seems the switch & LNB are only good for 8 total tuners and since the HD-DVR adds one more tuner, they have to change hardware on the roof, so he had to reschedule. He temporarily authorized the new HD-DVR as a single tuner unit until he can get back next week sometime.

Meanwhile although I can watch TV and access the Genie's playlist, the new DVR's HDD won't actually combine with the Genie and other HD-DVR's HDD. I can live with this for a few days but I'm also having trouble accessing On-Demand programming and I can't get an internet connection on the new DVR. I tried running an Ethernet cable but it still won't connect. Is all this because of the work they still have to do? Was just hoping to get on demand on the new DVR over the weekend but it's not a real big deal. I also wanted to have a basic understanding to what they need to do when they return.

Thanks,
Walt

No, the lack of ethernet has nothing to do with the DVR single tuner operation. Ethernet is accessed throughthe coax and you don't need a separate ethernet cable.
Make sure the ethernt cable is disconnected then reset the DVR using the red button next to the smartcard.

Does that it's only set up as single tuner matter?

you already had one HDDVR right? try setting that to single tuner mode and see if you can get the same problems to show up. if so, you're stuck till they come back. FWIW, keep an eye on your tech, its not hard to add. he should have know what he was getting into before he even showed up.

Single tuner mode does not have any effect on Internet..

So what do you see if you look at more system info, internet connected or not?

Ok, entering embarrassing confession mode. I'd forgotten the tech had authorized the DVR from the Genie location and I hadn't checked to see if he reconnected everything at the Genie. Sure enough, the ethernet cable was still unpluged. That solved the internet connection and accessing on demand issues. Sorry!

Back at the DVR , status now shows connected ok but still gives error for 2nd tuner, which is apparently because of the swm switch he still needs to add.

I may just be confused about how the DVR's HDDs are supposed to intergrate into whole home. All units are set to share & allow and all recordings seem to show up as single playlist on all boxes. I thought the three HDD capacities would combine and display as one larger HDD, sort of like TiVo does when you add an external HDD.
I guess my question is is all space on all HDDs available to be used regardless of which box recording is started from?
Thanks for your patience.

Hopefully he will be back soon to change out the LNB, add the SWM16 multiswitch and set the DVR for the second tuner.
Whole home only operates on the playlist; as you say there is a single integrated playlist. But the genie and DVRs still operate separately, each has its own todo list and recordings take place independently on each DVR

(snipers.....)

Ah, so to efficiently utilize all HHD space, recordings need to be initiated fairly evenly from each DVR & the Genie.?
In other words, if all recordings were set up from the Genie , even though the DVR boxes could see and access them, their HDDs would remain in-used while the Genie's would eventually fill up.

Yes. When you set up a recording fvrom the genie, it records on the genie. When you set it up on a DVR, it records on the DVR.
The only variations on this are:
if you have a RECEIVER (non-DVR) you can select to record a program on a specific DVR or on the GEnie
if you have a genie min-client, recordng set up there will record on the genie, because the client has no disk drive, it is essentially part of the genie

Your HR44 is 5 connections on the SWM. The HD DVR is 2 and HD receiver is 1. This fills a SWM8. So, he is going to swap that out for a SWM16.
I'm upgrading my system myself from a mutti-switch and starting out with a SWM16. They are cheap on ebay.

No, he has a genie plus two DVRs. That's NINE tuners, which is why he needs an SWM16. And why he currently has one tuner disabled on one of the DVRs.
And he does NOT have an SWM8, he has an SWM LNB, that is quite different. Just because it supports eight tuners does not make it an SWM8. An SWM8 is a multiswitch like the SWM16, connected to the dish via four cables.

You guys are a bit over my head with the SWM and LNB but I think I get the basic idea. The tech had said one reason he couldn't finish the job Friday was the switch and LNB had to be changed and they were both at / near the dish which had to be accessed from a (low) porch roof and he was not allowed to stand on the roof without his supervisor there.

Anyway, I appreciate the time and assistance you guys rendered over the week end and hopefully when they come back Tuesday all will be resolved.

One more question. Last night I noticed doing a "list" from the new HD DVR didn't show all the recordings from the Genie playlist. For example I have about sixty episodes of Gunsmoke (don't laugh, I love old westerns) recorded on the Genie but only about half of them show up on the DVR.

would *highly* reccomend putting the SWM16 multiswitch inside somewhere if possible. it is not friendly with water in any form.
