**Team Summit Update**

Then the local stations would loose their leverage with the carriers.

If their signal can be replaced with a similar one, nobody negotiates, just go with the alternate.

This is just exactly the opposite of the local monopolies now created for stations.

Iknow we abhor monopolies, but we either keep the monopoly model we have had for for over 70 years or we tear it up an open all DNA's to "let the big dog win".

Small stations have enough trouble generating revenue without carriers being able to substitute an outside signal on them.
The local stations would still have a monopoly in the "core" of their market, where the vast majority of the population in their market lives. I was only talking about opening up the fringes of the market (where it is harder to get OTA reception) to competition via satellite, just like the local affiliates already face competition from out-of-market affiliates on the local cable systems in those areas.

They don't because then Dish would have to pay the nickel or what ever other extortion fee the providers want to carry that station.

If the provider was only required to pay for the channels in the DMA, and got the significant viewed channels for free this would not be an issue.
Well, my proposal would go both ways: when Dish (or any other provider) negotiates to carry a local station, they would be required to negotiate for carriage in the entire area where the station can legally be offered, including the out-of-market Significantly Viewed areas.

On the subject of the new DPH42 switch. I found a local installer who is willing to install two Hopper 3 units for me. However, he is quoting me $450 for the DPH42 Switch Kit. Dish Depot lists the switch at $79.99. The installer can only install what he sells so it appears I'm stuck. I asked him if the 'kit' included an amplifier which was shown in an installation pdf posted earlier and he says it does not. I'm going to call Dish Depot tomorrow and ask them if the price on their site is correct, but it is in line with other switches they sell.

I ordered my DPH42 switch on 24 May for $79.99 from Dish Depot. Also ordered a Hybrid Duo Hub. The last I heard from a Dirt member is one Hopper 3 allowed.

But, will Dish activate two Hopper 3's on the same account? I asked the DIRT team after the DPH42 announcement a couple of days ago and they said they will not activate two Hopper 3's on the same account. Who knows if that will ever change.

Maybe $450 for the switch and the second Hopper 3? That would still be a little high. :)

Once the CUI is deployed to everyone, I'm sure a lot of customers are going to want upgrades. The new interface is just too slow on the older models. Hopefully, that will add some pressure where Dish will remove the two Hopper 3 restriction.

The reason I was given that it is a business rule of just one Hopper 3. No telling what the real reason is.

The installer assured me this was done through Dish and activation would not be a problem. The switch cost didn't include the additional Hopper 3. The cost of the receivers was $100 for the first and $350 for the second. All told, labor included I was looking at something like $1,280. I really want two Hopper 3's, but that's just stupid, in my opinion of course.

Is this a DISH installer or retailer?

I would contact DIRT first and ask if they will activate two Hopper 3's on your account. I just asked them on Thursday and they said they cannot activate two Hopper 3's even with the DPH42 being released.

In email discussions on the price issues he described his business as, a "boutique CEDIA CERTIFIED Dish Retailer". As far as activation, I got the same info from DIRT members and from emailing Dish. Not possible. I figured I had nothing to lose by contacting a local installer, so that's what I did.

But, if DIRT is saying they cannot activate two Hopper 3's, your local installer will not be able to activate until that restriction is removed.

You did good. All we can do is try. It is good to discuss the only one Hopper 3 issue. Have you heard of this place JSheridan?

IIRC, all previous 2 Hopper 3 installs have been with one account per Hopper, sou you better be careful that you don't get double accounted.

No disrespect to any DIRT members, but I can't imagine a retailer would get pricing from Dish (he needed my acct info) for the install without assurance the receivers would be activated.

I hear ya, good point. It sure sounds like a high price that retailer wants to charge.
