So does the 17 talk to mini clients wirelessly for video and how reliable is that? That sure would make life easier. Other than that, I see no point to it until there is 4K live content regularly.
Yes it has a built-in WVB with MoCA 2.0 capability for communication with the current wireless client (C41W) as well as a possible future C61W 4K wireless client.

After watching that video I wonder, why require a dish when its connected to the internet...they can literally provide DirecTV through IPTV...Maybe the HS17 will eventually be able to be incorporated with DirecTV NOW...
AT&T is making things stupid confusing.

Are the channels exact between the D* and D Now platforms ?

they are a sat tv company. how many of their subs dont have internet?

I see, still thinking they trying to bring some of the UVerse tech to Directv with this addition.
I hate the wireless genies, they suck, I hope they release the next version close to what Dish or TiVo offer.

The DTV boxes mainly need the internet connection for DTV Cinema, VOD and the DTV Apps. Also software updates can be delivered over the Internet in addition to coax on the HS-17 only. When info was coming out on the HS-17 it mentioned IPTV but IPTV can also mean VOD. I thought of a way of looking at the HS-17 as basically a headless HR-54 with a wireless video bridge built in. I read an article that said UVerseTV is going away however they still have to support the 4 million customers that UVerseTV still has.

Yes and works well. I was plesently suprised. I have 3000 square foot home and havent found a spot that it doesnt work in, including in the back yard through stucco. I also have the HS17 upstairs next to my router on the 2nd floor of my home.

hs17 has wireless video bridge built in, so it can do wireless clients

however there are no wireless 4k clients, well not yet anyway

Coming soon..

I think we will see more of the IPTV portion come in play when the new guide and software come out in the fall. You can search video's now on it and see content over the HS17 now. I cant remember where I was at in the menu but there was IP content from outside of DirecTV / ATT that I was able to stream. One other cool feature is the speed test feature on the network setup screen. It doesnt tell you the exact download rate but it will tell you the ablity of your internet connection and if you can stream 4K or have the ablity to do instant streaming. I'm on gigabit so I maxed out the meter and can do instant streaming.

In the article it says the new guide wont be available to DTV and UVerseTV customers in the coming years. Is that wrong and we are going to get it this Fall? If so, will the current H/HR boxes get it or just the HS-17 and above? It said DTV Now gets it first then the DTV streaming app next.

OK. I guess I could go ahead with install and then just a wireless client later for 4K. Looking at it, they would install the HS17 in a center room with my ATT gigabit modem, and then put the wireless clients at my two tvs?

Just thinking about it, I have an HR54 but not sure what client I have. Would it no be cheaper for me to get a C61K if I dont have it, put the HR54 in the other room, connect the C61K to the main display, and add 4K service?

ATT says $650 for HS17 install + two clients and these arent even wireless yet.

WHAT ?
$650 to install ?
Thats ridiculous ....
That should keep the distribution down.

+1

They offered mine with 6 standard clients for free for a 2 year commitment ...

As a free upgrade for being out of contract and a customer since '95.

We didn't take it ...

No one here likes clients and no OTA ...

So, are these available to everyone now ?
I know they are not here yet.

Well, in their defense, if I was to buy it from SS it would be $599. They just dont have the box discounted at all for me from $399, but I did not expect them too since Im a "new" sub.

I have a HR54 in one room and a C51 in the other, if I decide to go 4K when they get some content, Ill just get a C61k, move the HR54 in the other room, and use the C61 at my main display.
