The Official SatelliteGuys TV Repack Topic

I would imagine that once all of the filings have been assembled, there will be much discussion about how to make everything work. Filings are by no means findings and I'd bet that more than a few will be rejected as unworkable in the big picture.

Went as in past tense?

The repack isn't supposed to commence for another year in the first of ten phases. Further, the assignments aren't yet cast in stone as the Second Window for appeals doesn't close until November 2nd.

Is there anyone else here from the Lafayette market?
I got that off Rabbitears. Get with whomever put the changes on rabbitears and cry to them since you seem to know everything

I got that off Rabbitears.
Rabbitears says that those stations will be moving, not that they "went" already. Channels 40 and 50 are slated to be part of Phase 1 if I'm reading the map correctly. Phase 1 doesn't go live until the end of November 2018 according to the May 8th posting.

This is why I asked you to clarify why you spoke as if the move had already happened ("went" versus "will be moving").

my apologies for being an @**......however I have a question about DTA America. I was told that they were adding channels in Lafayette Louisiana in November. The channels haven't shown up yet, which is fine, I can wait. Those stations are low power of course. I am pretty sure once the repack is done then DTA will start working on this, sometime next year....Just asking...

It isn't entirely clear what is going to happen with DTV America (not DTA) as they don't qualify for a channel assignment in the repack and most of their stations come with a full complement of subchannels that complicates "buddying up" with other stations. As I've noted before, there is a concentration of markets in your area that are having to share the remaining 35 TV channels.

DTV's recent history (and the consent decree that Trip referenced) indicate that their actions often fall short of their words.

After my last response from them I am not really sold on DTA till I see results. As for that channel sharing, oh yes we have a bunch. Most stations in the Lafayette market can be seen in communities in the Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, and Alexandria metro areas. It'll be interesting how they gonna fit every station under the cap. It'll work but we might lose a station like the lansing market when their MNTV 18 went as a subnet on their FOX affiliate 47. I maybe jumping the gun but I can see us losing (well the word I got from the owner) the KLAF-LD 46 station which is sister station to KADN FOX 15, NBC 46 KLAF is now KADN NBC 15.2. Again Thanks....we'll see what the future brings in all this...

They're scrambling for something that works better than what they have. Oaters and classic movies seems to be how many of them start out but then they move on to stuff that is either cheaper or more attractive to viewers. We must keep in mind that the goal is garnering the eyeballs of those who the advertisers want to be seen by. This contributes to why you see all the law firm and medical ads on the channels that show the old stuff.

On January 23rd, 2018 WCGV-TV MNTV of Milwaukee will cease Operations due to this spectrum stuff. GritTV is scheduled to move to WTMJ 4.4, leaving Comet to be moved to either WITI (Fox/AntTV) or Super 18 CW WVTV (which already has GetTV). If the DT 4 is used on the remaining stations for TBD and Charge, no subnets should be lost.

Predicting what will happen is very risky business. Milwaukee may be an interesting experiment as most of the stations will be moving and six stations have already indicated intentions to combine into three channels.

If this is the wrong thrread for this please move it. I understand that WDCW in DC will begin channel sharing with WFC quite soon. des anyone know what subchannels will bite the dust when this happens.

In looking at the FCC's LMS database, it appears that the application to share with WFDC was "dismissed". Maybe I'm reading it wrong.

In general, I would expect that it is very unlikely anyone outside the station management knows and they certainly wouldn't tip their hand if there are any franchise agreements approaching renewal.

It seems reasonable that stations sharing frequencies will weigh their options when the time comes to see which networks are going to attract the most market share or maybe they collectively off all of them and go with two tolerable HD feeds.

Since the broadcast spectrum for WCGV-TV My 24 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin will be sold off, WCGV and every one of their subchannels except Grit, will be mapped to sister station WVTV CW 18's broadcast spectrum. Grit will then become the fourth subchannel of WTMJ NBC 4.

Maybe they're going to share with WJLA instead.
Many configurations are possible as long as you remember that adding a second HD channel is like adding three or four SD feeds and as such, may demand abandoning SD feeds rather than bringing subchannels along. WJLA has a somewhat lighter footprint as it has a 720p main feed but there isn't room for five subchannels along with the two HD feeds.

I was watching my local PBS (KOPB) last night that has two 1080i feeds, one 480i feed and a 480i "art card" with secondary audio and when they're doing snowfall, waterfalls or otherwise full-screen motion, the picture breaks up horribly. Unfortunately the show I was watching was train travel in Switzerland in Winter. All this talk of "buddying up" is great, but it doesn't expand the capacity of the 6MHz channel.

This applies to both the repack and any effort towards a new broadcast TV standard. Hopefully they learn enough from one process that they don't botch the other.

There is the occasional crawl on WDCW announcing the channel sharing. The dismissal cited above was for an amendment to the a agreement not the agreement itself.

I am still wondeing iwhat subchannels will still be carried but I guess i can wait till the channel sharing happens.

“Just tell me when I need to rescan.” That’s what we’ll be hearing.

I think this sounds more and more like the problems are deliberate, designed to push ATSC 3.0. Doesn’t even take a conspiracy- it’s obvious to all. Stations doubling up will want their sub channels back. Viewers will want their PQ back. “Just buy in to this New and Improved TV: The new SUPER TV! ...... But Wait! There’s MORE! Hook your TV up to the Internet and.....”

ATSC 3.0 is too awkward. “Super TV” rolls off the tongue. And preserves “Ultra TV” for “8K.”

That's why the proponents have chosen the designation of "Next-Gen TV".

To the student of Physics, it appears that the repack will put a serious hurt on trying to voluntarily deploy a new broadcast standard. That doesn't seem to have discouraged the Next-Gen marketroids from pushing hard but they're still seeing dollar signs.

An Official Satellite Guys ATSC 3.0 topic is probably long-overdue.

Your right it will...Hate to see them lose Get when the 3 best shows from Antenna TV are moving to the sony owned subnet starting Tuesday and it looks like GetTV is hit. WVTV 18.1 CW, WVTV 18.2 MNTV, 18.3 Comet. will be the new CW Super 18 lineup come Jan 23. WITI which Sinclair will acquire from Tribune will keep Antenna. However there is a rumor that Fox TV Stations INC is looking to buy the station....Crazy. I will definitely keep up with this...

Early repack for PR and Virgin Islands approved.
FCC Allows Early Repack in Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands
The Federal Communications Commission on Jan. 11 granted a request from 20 TV stations in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to accelerate the timetable for construction of their post-repack channel assignment.

“The Commission has made it a top priority to assist with the recovery from last year’s devastating hurricanes,” said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai in a press release announcing the decision of the agency’s Incentive Auction Task Force and Media Bureau. Failure to grant the request would have left broadcasters suffering from the effects of Hurricane Irma and Maria with two bad choices, said Pai.

Either they would have to rebuild their transmission facilities on their existing channel assignment only to have to build again for their post-auction assignment in a couple of years, or they would have stayed dark for an extended period, he said. “Now, stations are no longer confronting that choice because they’ll be able to use their post-auction channel more quickly,” he said in the release.

Another benefit is affected broadcasters will now have access to the TV Broadcaster Reimbursement Fund to pay for the portion of the rebuild that’s attributable to the channel reassignment, he added.

The question I have for Chairman Pai is how does moving up the schedule change anything?

Will it magically produce engineering plans and speed them through the FCC's review process?

Will it make the necessary antennas available (I'm betting many later phases were hoping for hand-me-downs from the earlier phases)?

Will it somehow provide the transmitters required for the new frequencies (another hand-me-down issue)?

There's just so many things that don't seem to have been given their due diligence.

Are PR and USVI really that desperate for additional wireless bandwidth?
