DIY C-band dish

I wouldn't want to try one on C-Band either. Not gonna be big enough plus the addition of it not being "tuned" to a convergence point. I am afraid you attempt will be futile.

My papasan chair is 112 cm so would that be big enough for c-band? Also, how would I control my elevation?

And would it be best to cover it with window mesh?

Forget it. It's not worth the bother unless it was at least 304 cm. Not to mention there are FREE c-band dishes available nearly everywhere just for the asking. It's not the early 1980's anymore. No need to cobble things to that point.

My neighbor has a 10 footer that doesn’t appear to be used, but I’m ashamed to ask for it. Do you think she still uses it? I never see it maintained or moved. I’ve lived here since 2011

Maybe bring it up casually in a conversation with your neighbor? Like, "what channels are you getting with that dish?". Chances are it's not being used anymore but it looks like it's in good condition

Being ashamed is the last emotion you should have about this. Unless you hit it with your lawn mower, and it crashed to the ground. Now that would get me feeling ashamed if I had done it.

Go ahead and ask, the worst that can happen is she says NO, you can't have it. The next worse thing is: "Sure! But I want $2,000 for it!". If she says you can have it, you then need to find a way to remove it. Hiring a bucket truck to lift the whole thing off the pole can be probably done for around $150, and is well worth the expense. The next easiest way would be to tie it off on the top somehow against the house, and use a Sawzall to saw off the bottom of the pole like a hinge. You'll also need at least 2 guys to help it come down slowly.

In the spirit of tinkering, give it a try in the KU band. Keep your budget in the single digit. If you have room n line of sight go for the 10footer.

I'm with Primestar, what's the worst thing that could happen? I'll be driving down the road and spot one, and I'll go up and bang on the front door and ask them if they would like to get rid of the big dish in their yard. If they have a Dish Network or DirecTV in their yard, it's a dead give away they're not using it. I haven't been told no yet, but I did have one guy tell me his son was wanting it and he'd get back to me, but he never did.

I did pay $20.00 for one this past summer, but all the others were free. Most people just want them gone. If you and your neighbor are on good terms, go for it. Happy hunting. :)

Can't hurt to ask. Look at it as an excuse to be neighborly.
I have been amazed though at times I have stopped by to ask about an obviously unused dish, and they seem to want to recoup the original cost of the receiver(s) cabling, and dish assembly. Then they make you feel like they have been insulted when offered $100 if it's in real good shape... You have to be prepared to walk away too.

Luckily, I've never ran into that problem. I just had a guy call me that I had installed a dish for several years ago. As it turned out, he took the screen off it and turned it into a grape arbor. I asked him about the screen, and he had given to a friend who sells junk metal. It was nice to hear from him since I hadn't spoke with him in nearly 20 years. Just never know. He said he would have given it to me if his grapes weren't growing on it.

I think Kraven means a video of you hitting your dish with a lawnmower

I don't have one as I never did that. Not sure how he got that from my post as it was simply an analogy.

I simply said that maybe the only reason be be ashamed, would be maybe if you hit that dish with your lawn mower. Asking somebody if they are using a dish, or want it removed and "can I have it", isn't any reason to be ashamed...
