This is so reminiscent of working in the newspaper industry. We lost print subscribers every quarter, but we'd add lower-revenue digital readers. We couldn't add enough of the second to overcome the loss of the first. SMH.

Sounds like a lot of those subs went with the cheaper alternative to satellite: Sling tv. Why because Sling tv is less in price with no outrageous additional receiver fees and or made up fees that DISH charges like the NON DVR FEE.

Sling is cheaper because of no fees? Really? How about Sling is cheaper because it can be provided without paying for satellites, dishes, cables, receivers, etc. or a fleet of technicians who go out and install satellite service? Let's get real when we make comparisons.

All cable and satellite providers are losing subs to cord cutting.

I think he was trying to say it was cheaper, and there were no additional fees. I am pretty certain there are also dramatically reduced margins for Dish.

The way I see it, Dish has a smart business plan. Before streaming TV services, Dish satellite TV was the low-cost competitor to cable and Directv. Today, that low-cost competitor is Sling TV, while Dish satellite TV is more of a premium service for households who's needs aren't served by streaming TV services. Large families for example who can't have everyone in the family streaming all their TV content. Or customers who have the TV on all the time, for news, sports or whatever, these customers couldn't rely on streaming TV because their internet providers would be unhappy with their high data usage. Dish now has two services to compete with on two fronts.

The biggest expense is programming

Unfortunately, the conventional wisdom is you need at least 3 or 4 fronts to compete these days (Broadband, TV, Phone, Wireless). I do not necessarily agree.

Yeah, which I really don't understand. They don't even have a DVR yet. Do all those hundreds of thousands of people watch all those terrible OnDemand ads all the time? What must that be doing to their brains?

I think it has alot to do with name recognition.

Even with the head start, many outside of current subs and forum participants have no idea what Sling tv is or really does. PS Vue suffers this to an even greater degree.

However everyone knows what Directv is, and even being a different product, many that are now getting to the point where they want to go OTT simply are signing up with what they recognize, even with better (imo) offerings available.

That's why they were dumb to name the service Sling TV, instead of Dish Now. Sling TV draws a blank for most people, or they remember the old Slingbox, which I still use.

Sling TV doesn't even carry cable's most popular channel, Fox News or Fox Business Network. Kind of strange to eliminate a lot of subscribers right off the bat.

Ever get the feeling SlingTV is a hobby that got out of control, and now everyone else is doing it too?
