AT&T's new streaming box offered to Directv Now customers for testing

With the shrinking satellite TV customer base, as some point soon it won't be economically feasible to continue to launch and operate geo-stationary satellites for TV. The cost per customer for infrastructure will be too high. Streaming is the future of video, and rapidly becoming the present. People need to start agitating for better rural internet access soon, or they won't have TV at all.

Directv isn't going to "transition" any existing satellite customers. It would cost them money to do that, and save them nothing. The only transition will be for new customers, where they will want them to do the IP version because it will be cheaper for them - no installer visit to put up a dish, no Genie required.

Satellite will be available for at least a decade, but you might have to pay up front or agree to a longer commitment for them to defray those higher initial costs if you want satellite versus IP as a new customer.

From the article:

The grander idea is this box will radically change the way in which its service operates to the point where AT&T will begin transitioning its remaining DIRECTV subscribers over to the new box...

They have now declared the intention to move existing sat custies to IP.

We will see.

They didn't quote any statement from AT&T. That's just the author's own stupidity shining through.

I still haven’t heard if this is a 24 month commitment like the satellite or not.
The answer will be telling of how successful this idea is.

This is a great idea.

There are many customers out there that do not understand the streaming concept, can figure out how to download an app and enter a username and password.

With this setup, they ship the box to the customer, the customer enters their WiFi password and that’s it

I just had a customer sign up today, next thing he asks me where he picks up the equipment

Until they eliminate data caps streaming won't be an option for a lot of customers.
If they have att broadband..cap won't matter...I think the money will be in the apps..broadband should be priced to support the maximum number of app..I cant speak for small broadband companies..but comcast etc know where the money is

So where are the DTV cheerleaders that were telling me satellite wasn't going anywhere??? But on a serious note this is disturbing and honestly I'm the kind of person that likes to go home turn on the TV and browse and if streaming is the future I'd rather go without TV period.

With a brand new satellite, they aren’t dumping them yet. It’s a long game.

No doubt all plans will be reviewed in a couple of years, when more is known about the success of 5G, AirGig and LEO/MEO satellites.

Did D* pull the plug on Sat today ? I didn't hear that....
Satellite will be here for years to come.

Satellite isn't going anywhere, and if you get this new product it will work pretty much the same as the satellite product. You'll be able to turn on your TV and browse just the same. The main difference will be that instead of recording locally to a Genie you will have a cloud DVR like what Directv Now has.

What if it gave you the option to record to the HS-27 and the cloud DVR? Could that be why it said in the manual that it can only work with the HS-27?

Directv has been talking about how the IP product will allow them to cut costs for the initial install, a big part of that cost reduction is getting rid of the Genie. The reason the C71KW manual mentioned the HS27 is that this new client will also be used for satellite. They wouldn't have named it as an obvious continuation of the C31/C41/C51/C61 client progression if it wasn't intended as the successor to that line. That's another way to cut costs, use the same client hardware on both the satellite and IP products.

One thing that would be interesting is if this new HS27 was able to do Sat AND IP, to a point that if your Sat loses signal (rain/snow or obstruction I guess) it would kick over to Internet base so you could still watch TV.
