Just wondering if anyone's gotten these........I recently downgraded my package from the Ultimate all the way down to the Select....Got a call today from a 973-846-4173 number, identifying themselves as DirecTV, offering 13 channels of free Showtime. When asked how long, "as long as you would like". I gave no type of financial information, and called DirecTV to verify that this indeed was a scam.

I called the number back and they do identify themselves as DirecTV, but it's not the same usual greeting when one calls DirecTV. I was prompted to leave my name and number, which I didn't.

Has anyone else gotten these calls?

Did you try googling the number? If you did you would have your answer.

Have you looked up the number on Google to see if people have reported the number as scam? I personally 1000% sure it was scam. I've heard about similar scams since years ago.

Yep! Did that after the call and didn't come up with a whole lot of anything. And as Claude said, their recording was almost comical, if you call and listen. I'm sure the agents are "always busy with other customers" and one will never get a live person.

Likely google voice or some random voip provider.

That’s the problem with voip. It’s not traceable and these people could be calling from over seas.

The problem isn't with VOIP. If you have a PBX you can set caller ID to whatever number you want, which is why that was being done for scam calls long before VOIP existed. VOIP just brought the cost down since you don't have to pay your local phone company for all those outgoing PBX calls like you used to.

This problem could be solved if telcos really wanted to, but they don't really want to stop these calls because your telco makes money when a call for your number is handed off. Might not be much, but with the volume of scam/spam calls it adds up to real money that would lose if they acted to block them. There are also regulatory issues that mean any solution they come up with for blocking these calls outright can't EVER be wrong, because they face heavy fines for blocking legitimate calls.

My PBX does the same thing. But you still need a number for people to call you back, and that’s where voip is the problem.
