Been a while since I have turned on the FTA system. I powered on my Openbox 10 STB to find the power display cycles on and off on its own, and the box will not boot. Thinking it was a power supply problem I checked all the outputs from the transformer, all good. I swapped a power supply for the main 24 volts from another unit, same results. Long story short, going to replace the receiver and need some advice on what unit to purchase. I need the ability to steer a dish, KU band only. Ideas?

Disconnect the coax going to the lnb, and try powering it again. IF it now powers up, you have a short in the coax line.
Otherwise, I'd recommend the Edision OS MIO receiver from Titanium Satellite. I LOVE mine, and can't do without it now. It's my Holy Grail receiver, and does everything I've ever wanted and needed.

Hi Mike, I get the same flashing red light and momentary on display for a split second, all wires disconnected. I went over all the boards looking for bad solder joints and hot capacitors and such. very clean, no damage. I believe this could be a victim of a power surge or lightning. I will check out the OS MIO.
Mike, what will I miss with say a omegasat DSB-6000u vs the Edision OS MIO? Ready to pull the trigger on the OS MIO but weighing the cost difference for a used Omegasat. Thoughts?
There's no comparison. The Edision is superior in every way, has 4k ability for some future proofing, HDMI output, can be loaded with up to 4 different images (like having FOUR receivers in 1!) AND best of all, it comes with Brian Gohl's (Titanium) support as that's his company. It also has support all over the world for new firmware images (Enigma2)
The Omegasat is fairly old now, doesn't have HDMI output, no USALS support, I don't think it's dvb-s2 capable (which means it's only good for 97w KU, and that's about it) and I seriously doubt it has any support anywhere.

You sold me, yes I have looked at several You Tube presentations, the transparent screen menus look nice, better sensitivity apparently on the receiver for weaker signals and 4K output which I have a 4K display. I have dealt with Titanium and Brian many times over the years, great company and support. And he is on eBay, beat the sales tax and shipping, I believe.
Ordered, I will post my thoughts after the unit arrives and I am familiar with it.
It has a bit of a learning curve for those of us only used to appliance receivers, but I'm positive you can learn it (if I can, anybody can!), and will love it after you get it set the way you'd like.
Pretty sure of the learning curve, this will be my 15th or so STB. I go way back to Unity Motion, Voom, and various FTA STB;s and computer cards. I love a challenge, keeps me entertained in the winter months. Just wish I had the line of sight for more during the summer months. I used to have 8 or 9 Primestar dishes set up all over the yard for different birds, the neighbors thought I was with the CIA. Only use the driven dish now and take what I can.
Hi. Lightning or a power surge are likely causes of STB failure. But there is another possibility if you are powering the dish motor using your STB.
Before connecting up your expensive new Edison OS Mio I would recommend checking your dish motor to make sure it is not drawing too much current. Since you mentioned in post #1 that it hasn't been used in a long time, the motor could be partially stuck or hard to move from a lack of lubrication. And trying to move a stuck motor will spike the current -- maybe enough to fry some components in the STB.
Oh shoot! Never thought of that, I did run the motor on another receiver first to get to my true South Sat, SES2. Scanned right up. Just before I read your post, I traveled to Galaxy 19 @ 97* and we are scanning in the channels . The move was the Edision STB on its own. Hope I did not damage anything. I better check current draw before any more moves.
And, it does cause concern of how a USALS motor can run off the power that starts at a wall wart.
Good question for Brian, is this receiver robust enough to drive a USALS or should I consider using a separate stb to do the grunt work?

What I was concerned about was a partially stuck USALS motor (from sitting a long time). It draws more current trying to move from a stuck position than in normal use.

A properly operating USALS or DiSEqC 1.2 motor current draw is well within the OS Mio load rating. If you have any concerns about a stuck USALS / DiSEqC 1.2 motor, connect 12-18Vdc battery to the motor's REC port (positive = center wire / Negative shield) and use the motors East/West button control to test drive. Definitely test the motor current draw to be sure it is within spec.
Brian, thank you for the reply. The USALS motor is Stab brand, about a year old. I do not see the usual mechanical East/West buttons on this one. I will check it but so far everything appears to be operating just fine. I love the Edision, very nice receiver. Thanks!
On mine they are on the bottom and out of sight unless I look from underneath. They're next to the RG6 connectors.
Mine is pretty old. Maybe the newer ones don't have movement buttons?
My STAB HH90 doesn't have any buttons on it. I believe that the HH120 doesn't have buttons either.
