Currently streaming the HDR 4:2:2 FTA Nascar feed on 89 C-band using SMPlayer. The feed is streaming well, no breakup's, but I notice the CPU usage is at 100%. The process using the most resources is called MPV. I'm assuming this is a process SMPlayer uses to render video.

Is this kind of CPU utilization normal? I thought the satellite receiver did most of the heavy lifting with streaming to PC.

Edit: after doing some research I see that SMPlayer is a frontend for command-line video players like MPV, so that makes sense. I'm just surprised by the 100% CPU usage.

the satellite receiver is sending the stream to your PC which is doing the decoding/playback. what is the CPU/GPU of your PC?

Some good info about streaming can be found here.

That is great information, and from a very trusted source! (El Bandido)

After I created this thread I tested streaming the same feed on my laptop, which has a much better processor, and CPU usage was less than 50%, so I think in this instance it's just a difference in processors. I have gigabit connections between the receiver(s) and the PC, so I doubt it's a network issue in this case.

The "Streaming PC" is an Intel 12th N100.
Mine is an N95 Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake, and I've never broken 36% cpu. Have you checked for the latest video driver? Oh yeah, I upgraded to 16GB Ram, as before that, I was running 70+% cpu consistently. Average now is around 19%, and up to 36% when it's really cranking. Running Windows 11
