cbc radio had an interview with an ex-marine that will be working with the new english service, im really looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

CBC radio this morning is reporting that Al Jazeera is going to only be seen by very few people in North America. The way they are wording their news broadcast, it sounds like just a few dozen people are going to be getting the signal through their own private cable systems. It doesn't surprise me that CBC hasn't heard of Free-To-Air, since their signal isn't available in 4:2:0 DVB..

It should be interesting to watch the news from a different perspective.

So is it live now? I was scanning my sat list last night and saw the barker saying "time to launch... 9:24:30" or something like that.

It should've gone live at 7 am EST (1200 GMT). I didn't have time to check before leaving for work.

ABC News just reported that Al Jazeera is not available by cable or satellite in North America, only way to watch it is by internet. ;) but we know better

The only way? Wow.

So far, it reminds me of Russia Today in terms of format - First Half hour is news, second half hour is feature.

Please tell me Globecast isn't going to encrypt this. It would probably kill any chance for a potential audience in the states.

I don't think it's going to be encrypted. Al Jaz want's this to be seen. They want to get their side of the message out. The anchors are speaking flawless English with a slight twinge of a British accent. They seem to be remarkably balanced in their presentation so far. It's nice to see stuff in Iraq and hear in English instead of trying to follow Arabic on the other channels.

Well, since the royal family in Qatar has been bankrolling this venture all along I don't see why they'd want to encrypt it either. No commercial interests to appease!

Anyone know if the HD Al-Jazeera International feed is available on any sat visible to N. America?

It's there mark, you want to borrow my chainsaw?

Al

Love to. I might have to secretly hire someone to operate it so I can pretend innocence when the entire mature spruce forest disappears :D

IA-13 is my western limit on C band because of the trees but I'm happy to get from there east to Pas 9 beyond which my neighbours house is in the way. Fortunately I'm Horizon to Horizon on the Ku dish. :)

I've been searching for one, but haven't found any. There probably won't be one until they sign up a cable system or satellite provider. Why pay for expensive transponder space if no one is using the feed yet.
