Hey Guys, sorry to ask such a rookie question (hence the username)

I'v got a Samsung DLP 1080 56" (can't remember the model #) I've had it for about a year now w/ directv's HD+DVR. I recently moved and had DirecTV come out and install the new satellite.

While the techinican was out here I asked him about component vs. HDMI cables. I do not have HDMI cables, I am currently running on component. The tech. told me I would not get any better connection w/ HDMI, just less wires.

My questions are this:

1) Would HDMI cables give me a better picture quality?
2) I was told DirecTV should have included HDMI cables, which they did not, is this true?
3) Which HDMI cables (if any) do you recomend, and what is the cost?

Thanks for the help in advance. I love reading through some of these posts..lots of informative people here!

For the record, one year ago, HDMI cables would NOT have been included with the HD receiver. HDMI cables began to be offered about 6-8 months ago with H20 & HR20's.

I have been selling and installing Directv since 1998, and Directv has not supplied HDMI cables on a regular basis until about 8 months ago. I'm not saying that they didn't provide you one, because as I recall, an occasional HDMI cable was included with H10's. As the H10's and HR10-250's were sold concurrently, then it is very possible to have had an HDMI cable included with your HR10-250. What I am saying is that it was not a consistant thing. Most of the time prior to 8 months ago, we sold the customer an HDMI cable if they needed one, because they were not usually included with the receiver.

As to the op's question, it has been our experience that HDMI shows a noticable difference with LCD & DLP, not so much with Plasma. Audio improvement is noticable, imo due to digital vs. analog. Biggest advantage is one cable vs. 5. Biggest disadvantage is price on long cable runs, as higher grade HDMI is needed for longer runs, and sometimes repeaters are necessary. We have run component video and analog audio well over 100 feet with no noticable loss of quality.

The cable has been listed on the side of the box for at least 2 years. Whats the name of your company?

Heres a picture of the box contents from 2005:
HR10-250 Review
This is the entire contents of the box minus the access card (forgot it was still in the box). The box contained the HR10-250, power cable, users manual, component cables, S-Video cable, HDMI-to-DVI cable, HDMI cable, A/V cables, phone cable, phone line splitter, remote and batteries.

Okay vurbano, I will give you this one and agree that the HR10-250's did include an HDMI cable, as well as a DVI to HDMI adapter. It is printed on my two boxes as well. Funny thing is that the included HDMI cable was useless on alot of HR10's, as the HDMI port would sometimes die. I had one that did, and one that didn't.

The HR10 not withstanding, Directv did not supply HDMI cables on a regular basis on the H10, nor on the H20 or the HR20 series until recently. Now they are offered on a regular basis, prior to 8 months ago, it was very sparodic.

Oh, and the name of my company is ALSAT Home Electronics.

If it was printed on the box the customer should have gotten one free of charge. Obviously the boxes that didnt have cables in them must have been open boxes buy instead of contacting D* you went ahead and charged the customer for the cable? I would have told you to pack up your crap and get off of my property and not signed anything, then got on the horn to D* about you. The competent thing would have been for you to contact D* before charging the customer a dime. Over even more competent would be to check that everything was in the box prior to arriving at your customers address. Have you ever even talked to D* about this?

I got a 90 foot HDMI cable and absolutely no problems. Its even coming off an HDMI Matrix switch.

I only notice a difference in my H20, HDMI looks slightly better then Component. But HR20 looks no different,Nor does my Vip 622.

Yes, I don't think anyone is saying that it's always a problem. If you look at the web site of someone like monoprice, they have 100ft cables without equalizers at 22 AWG (they are the really thick cables). But their 130ft 24 AWG cable has a built-in equalizer, and at 26AWG (thinner cables) the 75 and 100ft cables have equalizers.
Bluejeanscable are more conservative - they say up to 50ft should always be OK, up to 100 ft may or may not be, depending on the cable, the electrical environment and how clean (and square) the HDMI signal pulses coming out of the HDMI device are....

There is nothing to talk to Directv about. Directv only recently began to include HDMI cables in ALL of the H20 and HR20 boxes. The boxes that include an HDMI cable have a colored label affixed to the box that says "HDMI" printed on it. We leave the cables with the customer that come in the box. If the receiver comes with HDMI cable, the customer gets the cable. I am not going to rehash the HR10, I already said you were correct on that. In the case of the HR 10's we installed, the customers all have the HDMI cables that came with the receiver, but we rarely used the HDMI then, due to high failure rates of HDMI output, and that alot of HDTV's we came across didn't have HDMI ports.

As to HDMI cables we sold, this was only when they were not included with H10, H20 and HR20 receivers, but were needed for the install. We also sell HDMI cables to most of our DISH HD customers, as DISH does not include HDMI with their HD receivers.

And as to our competancy, we have never had a complaint with any install we have ever done, whether DISH, Directv, or Hughesnet, or any custom work. We are constantly repairing installs for customers who had sub-par installs from fulfillment installers, and people gladly pay us for the work we do for them. We work from referrals only, and folks come to us for our experience, quality of work, and service. My guess vurbano is that even you would be happy with our work, and would not as you put it tell us to "... pack up your crap and get off of my property .... " :)

The op was asking about HDMI cables for his HR20. The purpose of my original post was to inform him that based upon when he said he had his receiver installed, Directv wasn't providing HDMI cables with HR20's on a regular basis, so he wouldn't think he had been cheated out of a cable. I made the mistake of including the HR10 in my list of receivers that did not include HDMI cable, and have admitted that mistake. I am done with the discussion as to what cables come with what receiver. But it was fun discussing it!:D

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Even a physical disc purchase is considered a license, just extremely harder to pull access vs digital.

But once new players are no longer sold and older players quit working, that takes care of the access to your library.

See LaserDiscs for one example of that happening.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.

What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.

I opened my Radio Shack in Sept 1984 and right about that time they did the whole deregulation thing with the phone companies. I bought TONS of those phones that had been refurbished with a new outer shell. You could throw one of those out of a 3 story high window and it would still work.
That was an interesting time in history. I would have older customers come in and ask about phones.....they were terrified that they were going to get into trouble hooking up a second phone without the phone company knowing about it. One of the funniest episodes of WKRP was the one where Johnny thought the cops were showing up because they had an unregistered phone. I guess younger folks can't conceive of a time when you were limited to the number of phones you could have in your house....and limited to the length of the cord 🤣

Speaking about cords, I actually did drop a Trimline phone from probably 3 feet high on the floor when I was about 10 or so and it caused a small crack, this was the one with the modular jacks and it was hooked up with I think a 50 ft or longer RJ11C cable from Radio Shack. I still use the phone today connected to a Obi VoIP adapter and the cord is my custom made 6 position RJ11C, not sure of the official name for it without looking it up and Belden MediaTwist Crescent shaped Cat6+ cable.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

I tried this with both the Hurricanes and Hornets since I'm in upstate SC, and wasn't offered any kind of credit by the site. It's not a huge deal to me as I can pick up WSOC/WAXN over the air at my location even though I'm outside the Charlotte market.

I thought the NBA TV contracts were short term as the NBA is trying to get all of the teams into in an all in one streaming app?

The rest are still pointing to the TV Promise slate

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

Obviously you didn't read my post.....google says a coffee bag weighs half an ounce. But let's say you are correct and it DOES weigh a full ounce, that would still fall 5 ounces shy for Walmart's numbers to match.
You wouldn't happen to be kin to Bernie would you

None of it means a hill of coffee beans...the price is the price...its not going to get any lower...as long as you pay the price on the shelf at the register..there is no crime

I can't BELIEVE this is being such a difficult subject. The issue isn't the price....it's the advertised price per ounce. A lot of shoppers, myself included, use the price per ounce in determining which is the better value....with that number being inaccurate, it can trick someone into thinking that one product cost less per ounce than a competing product. Is this a crime?...above my pay grade. Is it dishonest? Yes.

Again it makes no difference...call the ftc and file a complaint...maybe your lawyer can file a class action lawsuit and you can collect your 25 cents
