UPDATING DVBS.DAT FILE IN DISK1/DISK2_BACKUP

In another thread someone offered a direct method of updating the DVBS.dat backup file located in DISK1 by using a Linux (I believe) command and FTP. The command was:

mount -o remount,rw -t ext3 /dev/hda1 /DISK1

This command runs from the CMD prompt after accessing the Azbox.

I was able to successfully access the box with this command but was reluctant to go ahead and send the new DVBS.dat file. Before I possibly make a boat anchor out of this P+ I thought I'd inquire to see if anybody has done this before and also to see if there is a means of repairing any damage should things not go as intended.

I agree with AcWxRadar 100%. I was just answering the original question in post #1.

Addressing it directly through Linux will not blow it up but may lead to a few ill-advised adjustments with heavy equipment.

A funny thing happened on the way to updating… I decided to take the conservative route and continue trying to use ACC to send updated files to both Disk2 and hopefully the Disk1/Disk2_backup/DVBS.dat file.

Because my current version of ACC seemed not to get the job done, I did a complete uninstall. Then found a new site from which I downloaded TOOLBOX AZBOX HD 1.2. This time the file was completely virus and malware free.

I installed and opened the new ACC program then sent a copy of the three .dat files to Disk2. The size of the DVBS.dat file I uploaded is 15.05 KB. Before I uploaded these files I had deleted the existing three files in Disk2 to insure a new copy was installed. After rebooting I checked to see if the Disk1 backup had received the new 15.05 size file. It had not changed from its original size of 132.37…still the old file. But, what did happen is the Disk2 DVBS.dat file had grown from 15.05 to 142.97 KB.

I repeated this procedure several times with the new install of ACC only to have the DVBS.dat file increase in size and the file list again become corrupted. Each time there were duplicates of all the western sats, along with all the eastern sats.

OK, I thought it time to start over so I did a factory reset. Reentered all the basic data and again uploaded my three .dat files. But this time I used a proven FTP program (CUTE FTP) instead of ACC. The same thing happen all over again…the disk1 backup file stayed the same at 132.37 but the Disk2 DVBS.dat file went right back to the 145 KB file size.

Now I'm stumped. It would appear that ACC has corrupted some operating system file that the factory reset could not make right. So now I'm not certain what steps to take next. I'm wondering if a new copy of the Azbox OS could be installed. Or maybe there is some other kind of fix.

Things are really sliding downhill, but at least I believe we're at the bottom, or very close to it, so all will hopefully get better from here.

dont use those stupid toolboxes... i use gftp in linux or filezilla in winblows, they both work fine. i still use xp.
flint, try just to delete dvbs file from disk1, make sure its gone, after that copy a new dvbs to the disk1. reboot azbox with the POWER SWITCH.

I think that what we should do is start a thread that is dedicated to all the TelNet Linux commands and what they actually do. All the instructions and commands would need to be screened very cautiously to ensure the accuracy. I think that it must be explicit regarding the rules about where to place commas, spaces and special characters and what every command we send actually does. We should get this sort of tutorial running soon. It would be benefical to all.

If you are willing and confident, maybe you can get the ball rolling here?

I feel that we must offer the avenues that you noted ealier as we strive to learn all that we can.

I am very hit and miss when it comes to availability but have larger concerns as well. There are many great Linux forums out there better suited to that task as this forum is better suited to satellite hobbyists.

Frankly I have seen AZBox related posts on various Internet sites implying the impossible that could lead to frustration. For example read-only means precisely that. Unless the software in use changes the status of a mounted file system to read-write any number of attempts will not write to or delete from it. (That is the intention.) Without a large group of contributors with knowledge specific to that command set the incorrect information could remain in place for a long time.

Like all tools, this set has some to-be-expected limitations but their value far exceeds their cost. I am long enough in the tooth to recall the difficult first days of some highly respected (and by times expensive) software; so with good support the future of the tools looks bright.

'AZBox Remote Control' for example has talent specific to certain tasks. DHCP is the default on a new box so, if DHCP is running, the network is set automatically. The Remote Control software is not quick but can help when setting 'Display' or while making time consuming changes when the television is actually in use by someone watching it from another source (SonicView for example). If, after studious research, careful planning, the making of financial and time commitments I decided on FTA, the first screen from the AZBox connected to a large North American Sony would not be encouraging. Remote Control could help build confidence.

One thing that may not be immediately obvious is the AZBox does not need to be connected to a television or LNB to be configured. For a network configuration the only connections required are network and power. As the software is free, a Windows computer anywhere can be used to download and run it. Those concerned with or frustrated by making system changes could take the unit (and suitably modified files if required) to someone with experience (who has made all the mistakes) and ask for their help. The Linux community is remarkably and infectiously co-operative. Again, I say this to help anyone who feels he just blew the budget on undocumented electronic snake oil.

I think supporting the tools others have generously created is the best way to manage the box. With a little exploration most of them do a great job and circumvent having to learn an arcane language.

So RADAR, thanks for the thought but I think your first take is better.

Problem when I switch from Bonus View channels back to regular Dish channels

Hello everyone, new guy here. I'm trying to solve problem I'm having with Dish bonus view channels. When I'm watching the bonus view channels then I switch back to regular dish channels, after few minutes the screen flips to black and after 30 seconds flips back to regular channels and continues to flip back and forth until I turn off TV. After I wait 30 minutes and turn back on , I can use regular channels again. So, its after I switch from bonus view channels to regular dish channels the problem starts. Been trying to fix this for a month, but no luck
Here what I've done.
i contacted Dish support and they sent me a new Joey3, but no help. Switched to a different HDMI input on TV, no help. Used different HDMI cable , no help. Used different electrical wall plug, no help.
Finally got a Dish tech to check it. He ran all systems check and was OK. Finally he brought in a small TV and plugged in the HDMI out from the Joey to the small TV. He could not get the problem to occur on his small TV, so the new Joey was working OK. So, then the problem must be myTV. He made some phone calls and came back with the answer that there must be a problem with the analog to digital switch in my TV. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, or is it time to be looking for a new TV? My tv LG OLED65C8PUA. TV has been trouble free til now. Thanks

First off, great TV. I'm torn between the 77C5 or the 77G5.
It sounds like the handshake between the Receiver and the TV is having a problem. Are you using the free cable that came with the Joey or a higher speed HDMI cable?? That's the f irst place I'd look

Price Increase on Owned Equipment?

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

Apparently it's not an "owned receiver" fee but rather an extension fee that's applied to 2nd and subsequent viewing. Maybe that played into their decision to force a box at every TV- garnering those fees

Possibly. In theory, $9 of the base pack has a rental fee built in. But now is this $5 a chance to get a little more? I don't know for sure. According to chat, it is a glitch and will be resolved in a timely manner, but we shall see. Part of my thinks there is a going to be a new charge, whether it is now or this fall. Here in Illinois, the law requires we are given 30 days notice of any fee changes, but I have not been given anything.

These fees are why streaming has caught on so well across the country and DISH is losing subs each quarter. Soon won't be enough subs to be profitable.

I went to try to add the Heartland channel as dummy to see what it would do for me as I own my receiver and have DISH Outdoors and this is what mine shows. (Note however I had to take the 2nd receiver I told you I added the other day off because I was told you can only have 1 receiver when you have a one outlet on the Dish Playmaker and was having issues with the 2nd receiver and I didn't know that and that was done yesterday as well so I am back to one receiver.)

FIFA World Cup of Horrors

Mexico takes on South Africa to open the World Cup Final (it is called the Final... this just isn't the World Cup Final... Final). The tournament has been plagued with rife malfeasance as FIFA has been committing all sorts of fraud with the ticket sales. Hotel rooms have gone unfilled as the prices to attend a game and stay somewhere are through the roof. I swear this is impacting Mansfield, OH hotel rates which are higher than average for the Indycar race. And there is a broadening VAR presence which will ruin things as nothing worse now when scoring a goal and knowing you can't quite celebrate yet as they check to see if a player was offside by a pixel a half-hour ago.

The Group Stage used to mean something, but now 32 of the 48... yeah, 48 teams are going to the Knockout Round. Getting into the Knockout Round used to be a big deal, even for the US. But now... if you don't lose all of your group stage games, you get to move on. Oi! And this is avoiding all the political stuff!

I have never been so unexcited for a World Cup before. Every game used to matter. But FIFA be darned if they don't try to squeeze out every dime they can out of the players, refs, and fans.

Caught up to the 500... err... k in St. Louis. What a race! Andretti Motorsport were doing very well with Ericsson and Kirkwood, meanwhile Power was moving up the grid. Veekay started cautiously. He was working the tires just right, becoming more lethal later in the stint. Rasmussen was racing likewise, not nearly as insane as he has in the past. Palou was leading the race, in a shocker to all. Caio Collet was having a wonderful ride, making Ferucci potentially sweat a bit. Rain came, rain went, rain came, rain went. Generally mild sprinkles, but enough to pause racing on an oval.

Palou would kind of send Siegel into the wall. Siegel really didn't do much wrong. As he noted, you have to turn at some point. Palou had acres of room below and Siegel might have had his ticket out of Indycar stamped. Dixon was doing the fuel thing and got busted twice by yellows, not pitting before the flag came out. Then the most critical happened... Palou ran out of gas on pit lane, effectively giving Newgarden the race lead and win. Newgarden had a very early pit, so he was able to slide in, get service and go. Meanwhile, everyone else was confused and stuck behind Palou for a bit. Once people figured what was happening, Newgarden had a major advantage of several seconds. Newgarden wouldn't look back and when it went green again, he'd hold the lead for the win.

Massive credit to Juncos Hollinger who bested Penske in getting Veekay out before Malukas in a transition that was oddly bizarre. I haven't had time to check, but I'm wondering if Veekay was about to run out of fuel or cut a tire. He was charging late in a stint, got up to fifth, and then tailed back for a few laps to 10th or 11th. It looked like it was over. Went into the pits, and after the pitting sequence was over, Veekay was well inside the top ten again. It was weird. And he charged, getting up to fourth. He made a late move on Rasmussen, but Rasmussen held his position with some great driving. In fact, there was a ton of incredible racing passing, not passing all race long. Veekay would finish 4th. A podium would have been awesome, but it is a great outcome for a guy who hopefully will get a break with a big team. We saw what Veekay could do with a Honda last season with fuel save, imagine replacing Simpson on Ganassi and having speed to go with fuel saving. His 6th at Indy and 4th at St. Louis get him up to 13th in the points standings and only 5 points outside of the top 10.

Ericsson finished second, resigned to finishing behind the current best in the world guy on a short oval. Rasmussen got the final step on the podium, a nice rebound to what has been an otherwise bad year for him, and a good reward to ECR who just extended his contract.

Channels on DIRECTV Satellite and not on Stream/Internet

So...DirecTV advertises the Choice package with 95+ bonus channels for Satellite customers. You don't want 90+ of the 95...

Excluding PPV, premium networks, infomercial, shopping, religion, and non-English programming, there are 7 channels on satellite that are not on streaming:
NFL Network, MavTV, FE TV, Free Speech, NASA, INSP, and Pursuit. I'm pretty sure a couple of those are public interest that they have to carry to meet an FCC quota on satellite.

I hope they get called out for this advertising because that is ridiculous. One big network, NFL, will probably get added to streaming when their next agreement comes up, and the rest are likely very low viewership.

What about streaming, what do you get extra with the Choice package that isn't on Satellite:
Two stations - one of which is an internet TV - Fox Weather, and Heros & Icons (a diginet). Nothing special here to look at either.

If they cleaned up a couple of their agreements, added a few public interest stations to streaming, they could probably have their lineups match. It's close now, if you take out all the garbage on satellite that they earn money on. If they can sell infomercials on satellite, why can't they on streaming, seems like a miss. A bigger miss, including those stations in the "bonus channels just for satellite customers." Pretty sad marketing right there.

I see in the 4K Channels Guide that the Telemundo WC games will be airing in 4K. I believe this is the first time ever we will have Spanish-language broadcasts in 4K (in the USA). Did not happen during the last World Cup in Qatar 2022.
