What it takes to lay my own T1 or other data cable?

I did consider satellite Internet, but I need reliable, always-on (even in bad weather) connection. I'm an IT security consultant and need connection that supports VPN and high bandwidth. Satellite plans that support VPN are very expensive and make T1 look very attractive. FAPs are a show-stopper because I do need to move lots of data at times. I was offered t1, but they wanted something like $600/month. They would have to lay cable about a mile or two along a freeway. I'm wondering if my own company lays that cable (or other medium): 1. is it subject to franchise agreement with my county? 2. who would own the cable? Is it true ownership? 3. Would my company then be able to sell the use of that cable? 4. What types of permits would I need: just county or some federal as well? Please enlighten me. Thanks.

I would look into the wireless route a little more. I don't know what city you live in, but there are often fixed-wireless providers, that you don't know about.
I work for a fixed wireless microwave isp, and we do little to no advertising. Our customers are mostly big companies needing custom solutions.
And i'm not sure why you dont think wireless compares to a T1, about 1/3 of our customer base is people that have switched away from T1's and bonded T1's, why? Cause they are too slow. If you want to spend the cash, wireless can be as fast as you want it to be.
We also often do point-to-point connections... is there any houses or buildings within a couple miles that you can see, that can get a decent internet connection? You can often talk someone into letting you use their building as a relay. Just an idea

If you can get phone service, you can get a T1. Its just a matter for the phone company to open each and every splice box and cut out all the multiples and install line amplifiers at certain points along the system.

I got T1's at the office and they are a pain in my butt, since we are like 27,000 feet from the central office and running on old lead cable. Everytime the fricken cable gets wet, we have issues.

Your probably better off looking into some point to point wireless systems, find a commercial building for rent a few miles away where DSL is available and rent some space on a rooftop for $100 per month to setup your point to point wireless network

There are some new business broadband providers who have come into the markets in recent years. While they are mostly in the major metropolitan areas, they are expanding very quickly.

We have three facilities where the land-line based services are always failing and we opted for a company called BOB Business Broadband. They need a line-of-site to a microwave tower or receiver - generally on a high building, and can provide up to 20 megabytes with up to 128 static IP addresses.

BOB Business Broadband wireless is STABLE and DEPENDABLE. We have had some major wind, snow, and rain storms and never lost connectivity, which, for us, is extremely important as doctors are pulling medical images while they are doing surgeries and we must have an always available connection.

T1 line is made up of 24 digitized voice channels, each channel carrying 64 kilobits per second. Being a full-duplex circuit allows it to transmit and receive 1.544 megabits per second.
When we think about transmitting voice and data we often connect it to the usual telephone lines we've grown to recognize to be the carrier of the two ever since. But have you heard that there's a new trend in transmitting voice and data that is a lot times better than a twisted copper telephone lines? Yes, there is and it has been around for years. It is simply called T1.

T1 is a particular kind of fiber optic lines or could also be copper that can carry 24 digitized voice channels or transmit 1.544 megabits per second. This sounds really good compared to a normal phone line that can only carry 30 kilobits per second. T1 carries 60 more times of data than a normal residential modem. It works this way; if the T1 line gets plug into the office's phone system then it's ready for telephone conversations while getting it plug into the network's router allows it to carry data.

Another key feature that makes a T1 line better again than an analog modem is its reliability. If the users are not really doing some heavy downloading at the same time, T1 line assures you that it can handle many users quite well. There would be no problem even if there are hundreds of users in one T1 line when they are simply doing general browsing.

Of course it is important as well to know how much you will be paying for a T1 line. Because of all its good features, it is also somehow costly than your traditional phone line. However, it is really more practical when a business have more than 8 telephone lines as this lessens telephone charges while providing high-speed internet access. Price of a T1 line ranges from $1,000 to $1,500 per month. This will depend on who is the provider and its destination. The other end of the T1 line requires to be connected to a web server. The fee the phone company charges and the fee the ISP charges combined is the sum of the cost.

For a large company, a T1 line might not suffice. The following are suggested:
  • DS0 - 64 kilobits per second
  • ISDN - Two DS0 lines plus signaling (16 kilobytes per second), or 128 kilobits per second
  • T1 - 1.544 megabits per second (24 DS0 lines)
  • T3 - 43.232 megabits per second (28 T1s)
  • OC3 - 155 megabits per second (84 T1s)
  • OC12 - 622 megabits per second (4 OC3s)
  • OC48 - 2.5 gigabits per seconds (4 OC12s)
  • OC192 - 9.6 gigabits per second (4 OC48s)

Price of a T1 line might back one off but the good news is prices are dropping. There are many providers who will you sure service that is really worth what you are paying for. T1 is the next step up from DSL/Cable but not only do you get twice the bandwidth you get a significant increase in reliability. The T1 provider guarantees a Quality of Service(QoS) through a Service Level Agreement(SLA). This ensures your business will always have the full bandwidth as per the SLA.

Once you submit your quote request and are happy with the services you will be getting it will take around few days to actually get your T1 install completed. So plan ahead. This time is mainly gated by the local exchange carrier who needs to coordinate the installation.

Some problems with the definitions above, to wit:

"Digital signal 1 (DS1, sometimes DS-1) is a T-carrier signaling scheme devised by Bell Labs.[1]​ DS1 is a widely used standard in telecommunications in North America and Japan to transmit voice and data between devices. E1 is used in place of T1 outside North America, Japan, and South Korea. Technically, DS1 is the logical bit pattern used over a physical T1 line; however, the terms "DS1" and "T1" are often used interchangeably, although incorrectly."

The poster is correct in his speed definitions toward the bottom of the posting, and is also correct in the fact that a T1 will "take a few days." Depending on the distance involved, the engineering of the circuit involved, and the inter-carrier cooperation, such an installation can take a couple of months to engineer and deploy.

T1 type services are being replaced with alternative services over fiber now, and and Comcast can now deliver up to 200 Gigabytes per second, over fiber, in their service areas where they have upgraded their networks to full digital service and have deployed their enterprise business class services.

Even slower services from carriers like Comcast are beating the pants off traditional T1 pricing and reliability. In the Chicago area, I can get 100 meg up, 10 down, soon to be 20 down, for less than $600.00 per month. 200 Gigabytes tops out around $25K per month. I can get 12 down and 2 up for about $50.00 per month.

Comcast's network, where they have upgraded their network, is also 100% fiber based to within a few blocks of the coaxial deployment. Unlike the older copper cables, buried in the ground for eons in some communities, this makes their services highly reliable. Comcast also provides much faster service when there is a problem. For business class customers, this typically means a problem is resolved within minutes, vs the hours or days of companies like AT&T. [Remember, the local telco almost always owns the copper cable hanging on the polls and buried in the ground, and, when a fault does occur, you will be at he mercy of the company over which your services travel to get the repairs made.

In the three years I have been working with Comcast business class services, I have moved more than 6,000 customers away from traditional copper T-1 type services, and given them much higher bandwidth, and much greater reliability in the process.

Look beyond the box - don't limit your bandwidth mindset to traditional carriers. You will not only save a ton of money, but will also have much more reliable service.

Heres an article from the Akron Beacon ... seeing Six Flags has bought Cedar Point and Kings Island, they are included ...
I said earlier that Cedar Point doesn't use this type of seat restraint ... well, it does use it, But the difference is, the ones up here ALSO have the Over the shoulder restraint as well ... like I was suggesting that they should have used with the Goliath.

One of the new(er) one at Cedar point the Gate Keeper, uses the Clam shell .. I have rode it many times and have Mostly felt secure, that ride will stop you part way on the ride and you just hang, till the ride is ready to continue ... I typically ride the Front Car ... when its getting ready, you ARE hanging, in the car, looking down .... it would require 2 separate restraint systems to unlock at the same time to possibly get out of it.

What supplements have you found that really helped your overall health

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Andy it builds your bones if I had used it in my food all my life I would not have the joint issues I have there is 3 types of calcium only the one from real foods build better bones

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

Right now on C band getting 105w, a Mexican channel with 95% quality and I am near Detroit! I'm recording a TECHNO MUSIC FESTIVAL today from Mexico ..if you can believe it.....and yes that SHED is partly in the path so I'm puzzled. There are also christian channels on 105w.

Starlink Router question

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

You can't even trust the cost per ounce info in grocery stores anymore

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't banned this guy from all of their stores. He has been on their CASE the past few months.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

I remember when a pound of coffee was 16oz. Now its 12oz, they don't call it a pound anymore and its three times the cost of the 16oz pound.

Ice cream is that way too, use to be a half gallon, now its 1.5 quart or some say 48 oz

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

It's simple math. You take the price and divide by the number of ounces and come up with the price per ounce. I find it hard to believe that Walmart's computers can't carry out simple division.

The division isn't the problem, the inputs are. On the Starbucks pods, $9.22 @ $3.35/oz works out to 2.75 oz, but the box is 1.94 oz. So either the system has the wrong weight on file, or the unit price is left over from an older price of about $6.50 that never got updated. Garbage in, garbage out. Walmart's had unit-pricing data problems before, too - in 2024 they paid $1.64M to settle with New Jersey after inspectors found 2,000+ instances of unit prices using the wrong unit of measure.

Wrong unit of measure? Having a hard time believing that or were they conflating solid and fluid ounces (stupid US measuring system).

The first two coffees aren't off on the same amount, so likely the unit price is linked to some previous price. Now I have to *bleeping* double check more math? Does anyone check anything anymore? Bad enough in the professional world having to QA/QC a third party's work. Don't want to have to do that in the grocery store now too! Not with the absurd measures that are used in the US. Is that unit price for blueberries in ounces or pints...

First world problems, but man... argh!!!

Might want to watch this before you buy a new vehicle battery

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.
