If there was any one thing besides Wall Street's gloom and doom projected onto Voom that drove it to its present situation it was their relationship with Install's, Inc.; the most decisive factor in the equation.

Install's, Inc. was and is the outsourced contractor for Voom's installations nationally. They subsequently scheduled and distributed actual installation assignments to yet other groups who are established regionally who acted as go betweens in the process. Eventually the installation process would assign an independent contractor servicing a small geographical area to do the actual installation. And, unfortunately that independent contractor had little training and experience, especially when it came to capturing OTA (over-the-air) signals.

Another factor was Install's, Inc. lack of overall supervision, training, and monitoring of the installation process. There was little on going in regards to Q and A (quality assurance). For a company who's sole existence is dependent on servicing providers by facilitating the actual installation process to Voom and many other clients, it would appear Installs, Inc. was seemingly only interested in the revenues it could generate but failed to satisfy both client and end-user. Again, seriously alarming when you consider their sole existence is predicated on the aforementioned.

Hence, dissatisfied customers churn and abuse from primary all the way down to independent contractors.

Who really made money off this Voom venture? Well, Install's, Inc. and those that have or had relationships with them seem to have faired pretty damn well.

How?

My personal experience with the installation process finally ended a week ago, successfully I might add, after 11 (eleven) installation visits. Eleven! Eleven intrusions into my life, eleven schedule changes, eleven inconveniences, and countless phone calls to both Voom and Install's, Inc. Eleven times Install's, Inc. went back to Voom and billed them for absolutely incompetent and unjustifiable services. This process initiated in March of 2004 ending in January of 2005; eleven months later.

If it were not for the fact I was relentless in asserting as to making damn sure I got what I had paid for I would have canceled long, long ago. Just as those other Voom subscribers did.

In the process I made absolutely clear to Install's, Inc. what they were doing to Voom and end users was a crime and that they would ultimately be responsible as to the demise of Voom.

But, let's be real here. The buck doesn't stop there. What the most the painful aspect about all of this is that Chuck Dolan and the board at CVC had no one, and I mean absolutely no one at the helm that was qualified to see this venture through.

When CVC issued IPOs in an attempt to spin off Voom as an independent entity it read as a suicide note.

As of this writing, Voom is still viable and operating yet, the CVC board met Monday, January 31, 2005 suposidly to put end to Voom's fate and ultimately the bleeding of assets from CVC's vault. Indecisively, they now intend to meet tomorrow, Friday, February 3, 2005, which in turn, may seal the fait of Voom once and for all.

How will the FCC handle the sale to Echostar of Voom's physical assets such as the satellite, Rainbow 1, its orbital location, uplink facilities in South Dakota as well as the 11 frequencies? It's anyone's guess at this juncture.

Echostar's past attempts to acquire DirecTV and other frequencies have fallen on deaf ears at the Commission. What would make this attempt any different?

No one has a crystal ball that can predict the future, but I will say this… if Voom is taken down, its assets dispersed, no one person or entity in there right mind will enter this arena again without Walls Street's screws saying, remember, I told you so.

Need I remind you, Wall Street made the same assertions as to viability when Chuck Dolan began HBO and Ted Turner with CNN, and in the end, who prevailed?

Voom, for all its worth, is stunning, in both concept and presentation. With 39 HD channels including specialty programming of the likes of, but not limited to GalleryHD, EquatorHD, UltraHD, RaveHD, and the scheduled expansion in March'05 to over 70 HD as well as hundreds of SD channels, was without exception an exciting and a much needed option, not only to the HD market but SD as well. Voom is a real addition in an extremely limited marketplace. It brought jobs, tax revenues, stimulated growth, technology and ingenuity. It could have even helped stifle inflation in regards to fees and kept the DBS and cable industries in check. The benefits are countless.

What a very bitter pill.

It isn't absolutely one thing that caused the demise or potentially of Voom. This is my personal experience. Two Install's, Inc. techs stood in defense of their operation. I gave them credit. What I did say, that was not my experience in my geographical location. I was simply expressing my utter frustration as to the unprofessional behavior. If it appeared I have been too callous, I apologize. BUT, I do feel installation experiences and installer's lack of experience and motivation have played a substantial part in the demise of Voom. Agreed, but it just sounded to me like you were aiming your arrows at TYORK.

I think most of you will agree 11 visits is a little over the top. Again, agreed 100%!

Vicki, if they had applied a pre-amp to your situation, chances are, you would still be a happy Voom client. Don't know for sure about this one, as that was a long time ago, and I haven't yet tried to refresh my knowledge picked up from the folks here when I was going through my install problems. I'm going to go up on the roof and get a clear picture of what was installed initially before I set my next install date, then I'll be back on the board asking questions and getting clear on the answers, so that when the next installer comes, I will be able to closely supervise him (if need be) to insure a proper installation. Personally, I know I should not have to do that...but I really want my VOOM back, and if that's what it takes, so be it! :)

I am not bad mouthing anyone as those are my real experiences.I didn't say you were bad mouthing anyone, just that it appeared to me you seemed to be trying to shoot a very helpful messenger. Firing your questions at Installs, Inc. mangement would be more appropriate and far more productive.

I went from a Stealth, to a Yagi and then to an UHF 8 bow ChannelMaster.

The Stealth was worthless.

A VHF/UHF Yagi was then used w/ a pre-amp, but couldn't hold two of the missing channels while the UPN affiliate wasn't receivable at all.

We then used a 8 bow UHF ChannelMaster w/o pre-amp. Now we lost ABC, PBS while NBC and WB were intermittent.

Add to the equation the pre-amp and all channels are solid as a rock.

A WORD OF CAUTION; the Bow-Tie UHF are specifically designed to pick up UHF frequencies, not VHF. They are also great for rejecting backside interference, as I had trouble with an analog channel south of my location stepping on a digital channel I wanted to receive, north. Given your location check to see if any stations are broadcasting the actual RF on any VHF frequencies before utilizing this antenna scheme.

Because I reside on the West Coast we also upgraded to a 24" dish with a satellite line-amp to increase gain.

I am, now a happy Voomer.

And again, I just had a "Ground-Hog Day" experience. I probably did shoot the messenger. My apologies.

Best regards.
Vicki
Glad to hear you're a happy Voomer now...

Bradley,

I hope to be in your same boat come 2/22!!@party Thanks for the input on the antennas. :)

I'm going to crawl up on the roof and check out what was left from the prior installation attempts, and will undoutedly be back with more questions prior to 2/22!! Gonna have to re-read all my old posts as well, because it seems like a long time ago, and I sometimes have to be retrained after coffee breaks! :D

Love Voom.
Hopelessly addicted to Rave and Equator.

But the install is where I have my only real gripe.
The installer was nice enough and seemed to know what he needed to know about the equipment. However, he was a terrible carpenter/drywall guy. I have FOUR false wall plates mounted adjacent to each other where he tried to cover his butchery of my wall. He finally gave up and used another wall. (the fifth cover plate withing 3 feet!)

One note though. I live about 4o miles south of the city and have experimented with hdtv from the early years. I have a HUGE antenna (radio shack) I installed in the attic many years ago for ota hd reception. When the installer saw it, he was very pleased. He knew ota wasn't going to be an issue on this install and he quickly put that sissy ota antenna that was provided back in the truck.

Having said that, he only ran one cable to the VOOM stb's and used the small metal snap-on contraption on the back of the receivers that combine the two inputs. What is that called? A diplexer? He stated he combined the dish cable and my ota cable up in the attic. I also do not know what that device was called.

Is this the proper way of doing it? All works fine except the daily soft-boots required to get the channels back. (They will suddenly just disappear, ota AND satellite.....a reboot returns them. The only channel that will work is the one the stb was already receiving, so you will not realize the problem until you change channels)

I can see how my install came very close to being one of the horror stories posted here often. I may have come dangerously close to bad ota issues and I could have very easily gotten angry about the wall butchery. I know some of you would have. I was just too excited to experience large quantities of HD to let his screw up get me steamed. I just wanted him to leave and never come back.

And finally, I would have been very happy to do a self install. I have never had someone else do it before. I did my own D* a couple of different times and even did Direcpc several times. I might not have done it as fast as the VOOM installer, but my work would have been far more professional. Time is a luxury he didn't seem to have a lot of.
B
My install took about 45 minutes and took only one trip. My installer not only installs VOOM, D*, & E* but also started out by installing OTA Antennas which he still does. He also had the equipment for my install the day after I scheduled my appointment.

The only problem I had was with VOOM. I was given the wrong DMA and had to wait 6 weeks to get the correct channel map to watch local TV (scanning wasn't available in the receivers yet). I guess that's the price you pay for being an early adopter.

Hello everyone, new guy here. I'm trying to solve problem I'm having with Dish bonus view channels. When I'm watching the bonus view channels then I switch back to regular dish channels, after few minutes the screen flips to black and after 30 seconds flips back to regular channels and continues to flip back and forth until I turn off TV. After I wait 30 minutes and turn back on , I can use regular channels again. So, its after I switch from bonus view channels to regular dish channels the problem starts. Been trying to fix this for a month, but no luck
Here what I've done.
i contacted Dish support and they sent me a new Joey3, but no help. Switched to a different HDMI input on TV, no help. Used different HDMI cable , no help. Used different electrical wall plug, no help.
Finally got a Dish tech to check it. He ran all systems check and was OK. Finally he brought in a small TV and plugged in the HDMI out from the Joey to the small TV. He could not get the problem to occur on his small TV, so the new Joey was working OK. So, then the problem must be myTV. He made some phone calls and came back with the answer that there must be a problem with the analog to digital switch in my TV. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, or is it time to be looking for a new TV? My tv LG OLED65C8PUA. TV has been trouble free til now. Thanks

I had a very unusual but delicious 1/4lb hotdog with cream cheese, raspberry preserves and chopped Hatch green chile. It is an unlikely combination but it works.

New low power station has been granted by the FCC and the new call leter is K33OB-D on RF ch. 33.

Will run at 15 KW ERP, this one runs from the Westside same location as KWPL-LD a HC2 owned station.

It's going to be aimed at eastern part of Albuquerque, so it's tightly focused beam pattern.

This new station is owned by Digital Network and what kind of programmings is unkown at this time.😎

Yeah, there are some diginets like Heartland, Retro, The Family Channel diginetworks that we already have here in this market and we don't need duplicates, but bring the new diginets on like the Rev'n, Karate Acton movies, different kind of music videos on the new station. :hatsoff2

Many of these in my DMA are on cell towers, so don't always reach very far because the towers aren't very high.

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

However, when I make a change (tried to add the Columbian pack for $2 so I could generate my bill) and there is a new line - it says "Access for TV" - whereas previously that line item was not there. I hope they aren't charging $5.00 for the initial TV now...

Apparently it's not an "owned receiver" fee but rather an extension fee that's applied to 2nd and subsequent viewing. Maybe that played into their decision to force a box at every TV- garnering those fees

Possibly. In theory, $9 of the base pack has a rental fee built in. But now is this $5 a chance to get a little more? I don't know for sure. According to chat, it is a glitch and will be resolved in a timely manner, but we shall see. Part of my thinks there is a going to be a new charge, whether it is now or this fall. Here in Illinois, the law requires we are given 30 days notice of any fee changes, but I have not been given anything.

These fees are why streaming has caught on so well across the country and DISH is losing subs each quarter. Soon won't be enough subs to be profitable.

With the 1st Quarter Report just released, Dish lost another 180,000, now at 4.84 Million.

Sling now at 1.79 million subscribers, down approximately 190,000.

For comparison, YouTube TV now has about double the subscribers of Dish and Sling combined.

I'm surprised Dish still has that many subscribers. I don't know a single person in my area that is still with them after getting either Starlink or fiber at their home. They all cancelled Dish and went with streaming. I used to get offers pretty regularly in the mail to come back to Dish, but no more. Haven't seen one in a couple of years now.

Only about 3.6% of Households in the United States, still have Dish Network.

For comparison, YouTube TV has about 10%.

$25 a month for 1 gig, for two years with Spectrum. I'd be darned that their router was MUCH better than AT&T's. I didn't realize that what I thought was something else was the bloody router. Those buffering issues stopped when I swapped... after AT&T refused to lower my bill, after 25 years of high speed internet service. They wanted $80 or so a month for 1 gig, with no drop to a lower speed.

1gbit up and down here from att start out great was suppose to be $60 for life of service, with years time it went back up to $80 I complained about they gave us $49 for year which about to end, I Wonder what prices will be when it "up" I in no way like ATT fiber service there DNS that are hardcode and unchange able in the router are some WORSE DNS I ever used. you know how much of pain it is to change DNS setting on EVERY single wireless device...

I dropped Dish a couple years back after having them for 25 years. The pricing got higher and after we got high speed internet, I watched it less and less. It got to the point all I watched was TCM for classic movies. Many of them are on You Tube now and a Premium subscription is $14 a month. A far cry of the $100 a month was paying with AT180, Supers, and locals. I get locals OTA anyway. I took down the dish several months ago and tossed it. I owned all my my equipment, so nothing to return. Do I miss a traditional cable type service? No way. If I want one I have all of the free live streaming with Roku, the Fire Stick, as well as Google TV. Right now as I type this, I am watching episodes of "The Midnight Special" from 1976 on You Tube, ad free. Dish was fine for many years. I do not regret buying the equipment and installing it myself (No installers in 1999). I enjoyed Dish for many years. My thoughts, Dish & Direct will be forced to merge in time, or they both will be gone. Even cable companies are getting out of TV. Some are only selling the internet and phone packages.

A lot of it flows back to the 4 big networks.

In my area we get 2 news feeds spread over 4 local stations.
ABC/NBC (TEGNA)
Same news cast simulcast over both channels.

CBS/Fox (Sinclair)
Same news casters at 5pm, 6pm, 10pm.
Fox shows an hour at 9pm but same news casters.

Hello again, haven't posted here in a while.

This morning, around 6:30am, I woke up and found the front panel lights on my HR44 on (I leave it off all the time as it is co-located with one of my Geminis).

Immediately thinking that either a reboot or power outage occurred, I checked the software version, and found that it's still the same release that was sent out last month.

I then ruled out a power outage by checking the clocks on my appliances and seeing that they're still correct (they reset when there's an outage, somewhat similar to the "blinking 12" on VCRs).

I then confirmed a reboot by checking the Upcoming Recordings (fka To-Do List) and seeing that the number was much lower than before (it always resets after a reboot).

I am definitely guessing what happened (and it may very well be actually what happened) is that the "Reset Required" prompt may have come up sometime overnight, and it eventually timed out and rebooted automatically. IIRC that prompt comes up when new software "plugins" have to be installed.

Would like to hear your thoughts, especially since I probably haven't talked to some of you reading this in a while (was a former CE member, left almost a year ago).

Thank you all in advance!
