Dish 1000.4 Installation Help / Fine Tuning

Hi,

A few months ago we had a Dish 1000.4 system installed by Dish Network and they left us with very mediocre signal strengths (30s to 50s). I have spent quite some time peaking the dish (and have also relocated it once) and now have 61.5 at 60%, 72 at 47% and 77 at 30%. I purchased the dishpointer app for iphone (very cool, by the way) and it shows I have very clear line of sight to 61.5 and 72, but 77 is iffy due to trees. The dish is mounted on top of a shed low to the ground and the line of sight is between two groups of trees I checked my high roof (which Dish also did when they came to install) and it seems like I can get over the tops of all the trees by going to the high roof.

I have read on this forum and in other places that the Dish 1000.4 is very hard to peak and align.

My question is that since I have great line of sight to 61.5 and 72 (in the current location) shouldn't they have much higher signal strengths, or do the trees to either side also affect the signal (even though they are not directly in the line of sight). I was meticulous in setting up the dish (used a bubble level on top of the mast to level in all directions). The second question I have is what is the maximum signal strength I can expect from a 1000.4 setup in a fully unobstructed installation? If 80% is the best I could do ever, then I am happy with the 60% I am currently getting on 61.5. Does my location (Northern NJ) have anything to do with signal strength? What about my LNB (I read that some of the Dish LNB's are made by Sharp and no good). Can I get a bigger "dish" to collect more of the signal and channel it to the LNBs

I have signal amplifiers inline (purchased from Sadoun online).

Also, I have installed 5 or 6 dish 500 systems and consistently gotten them to 125% signal, so I have some sort of experience with this.

Any help, comments, suggestions are appreciated.

It looks like your skew is a little off. If you move the dish up and down check where 77 and 61.5 go (they are the outer 2). If 77 goes up and 61.5 goes down then adjust your skew to a lower number, if 77 goes down and 61.5 goes up then adjust to a higher number. 72.7 should fall in there just fine if you get the other 2 set. I'm sure that you should be able to get 77 up to 50 or closer to it. What I do is set the left/right using the adjuster to where 77 gets as high as it goes then see where 72 gets as high as it goes and go in the middle, then adjust the elevation using the above notes.

And as for that minimum sheet, that is not correct, or at least not anymore. There is a new list of minimums out. The SAT Buddies had a minimum lvl update so I know that at least in my area the numbers are considerably higher than what's on that spreadsheet.

Actually I think that sheet is still correct for the most part. For whatever reason, Dish updated the Sat Buddies with the average instead of the minimum for each particular area. We made sure to point this out to our QASs. We were able to verify this with the last Tech Note concerning the Sat Buddies instructing how to update the thresholds and it did say on there it would show the average.

I installed , aimed and peaked my 1000.4 sat dish using the installation instructions that came with the box. I spent a few hours on it , because it is not like aiming and peaking the 1000.2 sat dish I had before. The azimuth cam is an important step that many do not bother to follow in the instructions. You can adjust it using the wrench and move it a little to the left or right till you get the sweet spot for 77 and 72.7 sats. If you adjust all the way to the left, you lose 72.7 and gain all on 77 sat and if you go to the far right you lose 77 and gain all n 72.7. Also the elevation rod is another step you can take to get the dish peaked just right for the highest signal strength on all 3 sats. I'm in southeast Texas, 90 miles from Houston ,Texas and I get the following strengths on all 3 sats:

77 sat between 45 - 55
72.7 sat between 60 - 70
61.5 sat between 50 - 70

As for the signal strength levels , you can add 30 points to any eastern arc reading and you will get a comparable reading to western arc sats. So in my case on my sats above they would read:

77 sat between 75 - 85
72.7 sat between 90 - 100
61.5 sat between 80 - 100

Adding 30? NO western arc sat (and especially not 129) will measure between 90-100, that is an OLD measurement and you're lucky to even get 80 for that matter. Adding a number value is irrelevant since they aren't really to be compared other than they are different. Just get to the minimums stated and forget this little bit. If you can get 50 on 72 while getting 55+ on 61.5 (which should be easy since you can get 60 on it) then you should be doing good. Since 77 is iffy with the trees just see what best you can get, but anything above 46-48 should be good for you.

I agree, the 30-point thing IMO is not an accurate statement. On the western arc the highest you are ever going to see is in the low 90s. Also, on 129, TP 19 (for me) is about 60, and TP 21 is about 78, 19 being 8PSK and 21 being QPSK. That would mean approximately an 18-point difference, not 30. But as was previously stated, the two different readings aren't really comparable. Once 110/119 move to 8PSK (when DISH can get rid of all old QPSK-only receivers) then WA and EA signal strengths can be more comparable. Though, they will still have different signal quality thresholds.

They've been pushing for that a lot lately. The last 2 days I've gone to 4 service calls for 015 that had 301 QPSK only swap outs as part of the w/o.

You may be 100% correct about the minimums being raised with an update. That I really haven't checked. I was just pointing out that the Sat Buddies are showing the average (or perhaps "updated average") with this latest update.

Bottom line, as long as I"m right there on the average, I don't have to even think about the minimums.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:

All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
- Independent of record too! Bonus.
MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
I'm out of ideas.

Cons

Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
- Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
Going to start resting players?
- The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Are you experiencing an issue with your 3rd party remote since the newest Hopper update?

Please post your remote make/model here and any details of your issue. We are looking to collect as many examples as possible. I may reach out to you for your receiver number, but please do not post it here.

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won

Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

This happened to me. I was outside mowing and my wife came out and said that our nieces and nephews were going to be on the Noon News. She had it on in the bedroom on our Joey3. Since they weren't on yet, I decided to turn it on in the Living Room on our Hopper3. When I selected the channel (through Dish, not OTA) the Joey3 turned itself off. When I went back to the bedroom to turn it back on, the Hopper3 did a reboot. Luckily it all finished before their story came on, but I just found it strange.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

H3 EHD lists upcoming airings instead of recordings on EHD and often won't recognize EHD is connected after reboot

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

The image I just sent for master H3 is on hopper+., casino is not but both Vs and bootstraps are the same.

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

As I understand it, the android is just the display signal from the hopper+. I can disconnect the H+ and plug the hdmi directly into the master hopper3.

It is not just a display signal as explained above. When you have the Hopper+ connected, it uses Android TV for pretty much everything except for the satellite signal which is why it uses the DISH app for the standard Hopper 3 functions. But that should not matter because in your case, CasinoH3 is the Hopper 3 with the EHD which is what you call the naughty one based on the dates you mentioned and Master Bedroom which has the Hopper Plus connected to the Hopper 3 that does not have the problem. So one way to test the theory is disconnect the Hopper Plus from that Hopper 3 and then use the EHD's connected to CasinoH3 currently to see if the same issue exists. That way you will know if the problem is there without a Hopper Plus connected or if CasinoH3 is just a bad hopper to begin with.

Normally when you disconnect the Hopper Plus, it will be 30 minutes or more before you can use the Hopper 3 again.

What you want to do is:
hold the POWER button in, not the red reset button, for about 45 seconds or so while disconnecting the power to the Plus and moving the HDMI cable and it will reboot to the normal Hopper only immediately.

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

That's the point at which innovation ends, and there's no longer any point to software engineering other than swatting bugs that result from misapplication.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

There are many examples in the headlines of people getting burned multiple times and not wavering in their pursuit of stupidity.

I was watching some of this guy's stuff and realized some of you may not be familiar. Basically his show is Candid Camera meets a magician. This is a comp of a few of his exploits. I first learned of him when I was out at a meeting in Denver about 10yrs ago. The men I was sitting at the table with started talking about this show and said it was one of the funniest things they had seen. When I got home I started watching it....yes, it is funny.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)
