A few days ago in another thread several of you offered me great help and advice regarding the potential harvesting a Birdview solid I spotted on Craigslist:

http://www.satelliteguys.us/c-band-satellite-discussion/264089-birdview-motor-pole-questions.html

A friend and I launched the attack on Monday. It was an easy job, other than I forgot to bring wasp spray. Between squirting penetrant on them and swatting with newspapers, we managed to decimate the major part of the town's wasp population without any successful countercharges on us. We lost track of the number of nests we emptied from the motor housing and feed.

Because I had previously decided to mount this to a wall, and because we could see the classic Birdview pole indents below the ground, there seemed no reason to dig out the concrete and thus we chopped the pole at ground level. I plan to follow phlatwound's advice and weld the Birdview tube inside a 6" schedule 40 pipe to extend it to the proper length. The owner probably would have been ok with simply ridding her yard of the dish, but as she was a recent Army wife transplant, I gladly gave her the $75 she asked in the ad. She had been very gracious in answering several rounds of questions, confirming measurements, etc. The dish is in great shape, with only one strut snapped at where it attaches to the dish. More on that later.

The motor housing was a disgusting mess of dead insects and other debris, of which I have only removed the first few layers. I was a little disappointed to find this dish only had the original multi-turn potentiometer position sensing, but having read the extensive threads here on such matters, I had assumed this would have to be dealt with either way.

When I re-read the material, my eye was caught by a post by bryan.lynch several years back:

http://www.satelliteguys.us/124870-birdview-reed-sensor-kit-2.html#post1234794

Bryan found a rotary encoder on the cheap and proposed using this instead of the traditional magnet wheel/reed switch approach. While at that time he planned to do something with this part, as far as I could tell neither he nor anyone else ever reported back about such a scheme. This sounded more fun to me that fabricating a magnet wheel. Yesterday the encoder and some odd parts arrived, and this morning I was a little kid on Christmas.

To summarize, the encoder is an AMT-102 from a company called CUI. It uses capacitive sensing to produce 48-2048 quadrature pulses per revolution. They also make an absolute position encoder which I may investigate some time down the road by attaching it directly to a polar axis shaft. There may be some issues with that, but the possibility of not caring about backlash sounds quite attractive. Still I would probably have to build my own GBOX-like unit to handle such a part. I digress.

The AMT-102 has a DIP switch to adjust the basic pulse rate. As the pulses are provided in quadrature, one can determine the shaft rotation direction. Unfortunately that is of no particular consequence for a GBOX/VBOX. However one can use the quadrature pulses to double the pulses rate. With the GBOX counting on both rising and falling edges, one can obtain 192-8192 pulses per revolution. Before proceeding with the motor itself, I bread-boarded a simple TTL XOR gate connected to an open-collector, high voltage buffer. The outputs of the encoder were wired in and the output connected to a GBOX. When set to the lowest resolution on the DIP switch (48 quadrature pulses), I measured about 200 counts for one turn of the encoder shaft. Perfect.

The next step was to transport the bread-board, power supply and GBOX to close proximity to the Birdview motor housing. The encoder kit has several shaft adapters. I chose the 3mm one which closely matches the worm gear shaft extension on which a small nylon gear used to live. This previously coupled to a larger gear driving the potentiometer. Rather than finalizing the mounting, I simply anchored the main part of the encoder with duct tape. I have attached a couple of photos of the setup.

Everything worked from the get-go. I centered the drive with a precision inclinometer and zeroed the GBOX. I ran motor until the half-moon gear was about to fall off the worm drive. I measured a motor angle of 80 degrees and a GBOX count of 5127, or about 64 clicks per degree (.016 degrees per click). At the same time I verified the GBOX could keep track of counts from -9999 to +9999 (nice). I doubt I would ever run a Birdview +/- 80 degrees because of the load being transferred to one or two teeth on the half-moon gear. This means one could adjust the DIP switch to 100 quadrature pulses per revolution for a resolution of 0.0075 degrees per click with a motor angle range of +/- 75 degrees, and be right at the point of wrapping around the GBOX counter. Of course this all is a bit silly as having such a resolution has very little to do with pointing accuracy. Still, bragging rights are worth something.

The next steps will be to wire-up a permanent circuit with some minor clean-ups and bypass caps, and drill and tap mounting holes for the encoder. First I'll have to clean and grease the gears. I will also have to provide a +5V source to run the circuit. That's available inside the GBOX, and I purchased a connector for the back of the GBOX so I can feed all five leads through that instead of dealing with the cheapo wire clamps on a stock GBOX.

Onto other matters.

I had read several people claiming the Birdview struts place the scalar about an inch too close to the focal point. My rough measurements confirmed that. As one of my struts was already broken, I looked into tapping it at something other than the stock value. It's not perfect, but I decided to tap the ends of all the struts at 7/16-14 after first cutting them down a few inches. I'll then twist on some bolt extenders and use about 4-6" of threaded rod so I can adjust the scalar position over a several inch range. Of course I'll have to drill the scalar plate out for this threading and use two nuts on each strut. This will change the adjustability of the Birdview scalar from being one of the worst imaginable to one of the best.

I've taken measurements of the Birdview scalar and have some minor concerns how well it will match a typical ADL or Chaparral feed. I'm not talking about the internal diameter, which has to be enlarged in any case, but of the field behavior. I may or may not model it before simply going ahead and reaming it out for grins because I don't want to adapt something else at this time.

Those who read my earlier thread may remember one of my targets is 37.5W, which requires a motor angle of 74 degrees where I live. Unfortunately the Birdview's half-moon gear will hit the back plate of the dish at about 65.5 degrees. I could chop out a small piece of this plate as it is not the actual dish surface itself to reach a larger motor angle. As I mentioned earlier, 80 degrees is really the absolute maximum the motor can be driven while still keeping a gear tooth or two meshed with the worm drive gear. If one lets the half-moon fall out of the worm, the pole mount hits at 85 degrees. So there may still be a chance for 37.5W on the Birdview, but I'm not worried either way because my other C-band dishes can steer to about 34W and my 1.8m Prodelin offset on an Ajak mount can barely hit 30W.

More to come as I continue.

Hank - that seems to be the case - even I had jumped on the 'rods too short' train when I put up Birdview #1. But there are still several twists left in this story.

To determine where the focal point really is, one needs to know both the distance from the center of the dish to the feed's opening edge, and the inset distance from that edge to the actual best focal point position inside the waveguide. This inset distance is normally determined empirically, and I haven't seen a complete derivation from theory. I have come across approximations that don't seem to exactly match real world measurements. Also measuring these quantities is a rat hole, because it is difficult to get accurate enough measurements.

The original Birdview feed and scalar are quite a bit different from 'modern' feeds and scalars. Thus the focal point inset could be somewhat different that what we typically see on other feeds and dishes. I would not be shocked if this is part of the explanation.

Another possibility is that C-band is much more forgiving than Ku-band when it comes to large dish tuning. Varying the feed distance a little off the focal point will not cause as drastic a loss for C-band, and as far as I know, Birdviews like mine never came with dual ortho feeds from the factory. Where they put the feed may have been good enough, if not perfect.

What is useful in my latest measurements is I am optimizing exclusively for Ku-band, and small adjustments yield more easily measured CNR deltas. Today I could see the difference in varying the feed position by as little as 1 mm, and the protrusion of the feed beyond the scalar rings by as little as 0.1 mm. I sometimes get things wrong, but these results were pretty dramatic.

While I noted in my previous post that my latest results suggest that stock Birdview rods were too long, rather than the common view that they were too short, there is another line of reasoning that could apply. While I don't particularly trust the focal point inset approximations, I had little choice but to use them in determining where the presumed focal point was located, relative to the feed horn edge. That is the only thing I can measure. But these approximations calculate a C-band inset of 16.4 mm, which just seems too large for my gut. If this was less, the difference between my Ku-band focal point measurement/estimate and where Birdview put their C-band horn would start getting very close to the same thing.

... To determine where the focal point really is, one needs to know both the distance from the center of the dish to the feed's opening edge, and the inset distance from that edge to the actual best focal point position inside the waveguide. ...
On my Birdview, the center portion of the dish appears to deviate from a true parabola. I noticed that shortly after I got it when I applied mirror film to the surface in an experiment to make a powerful solar cooker (it set wood on fire quickly!). With the mirror film I could clearly see that the dish flattens out more than it should from the center out to about a 12 inch radius. The center section of the dish deviates from a true parabola. So the "effective" depth of the dish is slightly greater than a measurement from the center surface to the rim would indicate

This would explain why previous calculations of the focal length based on the observed depth and width were too large -- the dish is deeper than it appears.
lost_mesa
My Birdview is the same, the center 12 inches or so flattens out. Not really an issue with the original large C Band scalar, as it would shade this area. But as you said, it would throw off the measurement of the depth.
P
On the surface these appear valid points. However a parabola is quite flat near its center. Since Birdview #2 is on the ground, I took a 12" ruler and placed it across the center of the dish. Now the center 2" of a Birdview is open and normally filled with a plastic hole plug, so I had to measure the depth at a 1" radius using a caliper, which was roughly 0.18". This corresponds to depth difference from a 6" radius to a 1" radius. Based on my 2011 notes, I would expect the parabola to have a depth difference of 0.22" between these points, which is 0.04" more than I measured. But this represents a flattening of only about 1/32" (or 1 mm), if my measurements today were highly precise. Which I doubt. Instead I'm inclined to say that the dish is actually pretty accurate starting at a radius of 1".

Because of the center plug and the fact that the outer rim of the dish is rolled (clearly deviating from a parabola), back in 2011 I tried a couple of techniques to estimate the diameter and depth of the dish. One was to string a wire tight across the dish and measure the depth at several distances. My recollection was that a parabolic fit was pretty good up until one approached the dish edge. This helped me in determining the effective diameter of the dish, and I measured the depth at a 1" radius because of the center hole. My calculated f/D was 0.403 vs. Birdview's spec of 0.4, virtually identical.

Unfortunately this flattening effect could only account for a 1-2 mm difference in the calculated vs. measured focal length, and very possibly less. Instead this morning I tried once again to bring Birdview's numbers and mine into correspondence. From my 2011 measurement, the original Birdview scalar rings were 1.003 m from the dish center. Just for laughs, I'll guess the focal point inset for the Birdview feed to be about 1/4", which isn't an unusual number in practice for my other C-band dishes/feeds. If these numbers are correct, Birdview would have been designing a focal length of about 1.009 m (39.72"). Yesterday I measured the distance from my Ku feed opening to the dish center as 1.006 m. Using a proportionality scaling between Ku and C-band, I would calculate a focal point inset of 2 mm for the ADF-120 feed. That yields a focal length of 1.008 m (39.69"). While I've mixed fairly accurate measurements with some gut, this could be very close to fact.

Wow you have spent some time on this. Highly valued info!

Since it's going to be summer in Denver tomorrow, I'm hoping to get Birdview #2 installed. I also modified this one to use a rotary encoder, like Birdview #1, but with better water shielding. The depth of the 'new' Birdview is a little less than the old one, and the scalar was set about 1 cm further away from the center. I'm real curious as to how this one will measure with LNBs.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.
A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Unless things have changed at Dish, which is entirely possible, they won't activate the 211, even as a replacement. I gave one to a customer a while back....which when I turned it off I made sure to tell the CSR I wanted it freed up so another customer could use it, I was assured it was.....and when they called to swap out there's they were told it couldn't be done. Now like I said, things MIGHT HAVE CHANGED.

It hasn't changed. When I cancelled my service the other day, they told me I didn't need to return the receiver (which I already knew because I purchased it).

But in addition to that, the young man told me not to sell it, but to take it to a recycling place. The reason he gave for the advice was because 211Ks can no longer be activated.

So as far as the VIP211k goes... once grandpa dies, he's dead.
T
They tell you to trash it and not to sell simply because they're phasing them out, not particularly because someone might be "confused" into buying it and not be able to activate. They tell people that in every case where they're not acting to get a box back, either from a replacement or service cancel.

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

Seems in some ways better. Nicer layout, as others said maybe cleaner. Moving ahead in the guide is better.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

Outside of gaming, would Joe Sixpack notice any difference?

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

What software? For iPhones? I tried to buy some image s/w IN THE APPLE STORE! They had none, and could not offer ANY s/w for iPhones

I assume you mean services, like iCloud and Apple Music, and not actual software sales. Services have been growing quickly for Apple, but hardware still brings home the bacon. As for where Apple's revenue comes from, the iPhone is still king with 49.58% of revenue as of June 2026. Services comes in second with 28%. iPad, Mac, and Wearables/Home makes up the rest. So, that is 72% coming from hardware. Their profit margin is around 25%, FWIW.

I am skeptical the AppleTV 4k makes them much money on the hardware though, which I suspect is what you were getting at.

Several Dish offers showed up today in my account. Once you choose one the rest are removed. Offers were Showtime, Starz, AMC and others.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

You have a different offer that is free for a shorter timeframe which is different than the one that I and bnewt saw without defining the promotion period as I sent the question to DISH Care via Facebook Messenger and this is the response I got back 20 minutes ago.
