Charged $15 for service call for tech to install dish on a pole

Hi all,

I just checked my bill and DISH charged me $15 because digital dish didn't permanently install the dish on a pole when they installed everything else. The tech scheduled a visit the next weekend for them to come dig the hole and mount the dish. I checked my bill today and there was a $15 charge for the sunday they came out. Is this a normal business practice? I IM'd DISH today and they couldn't refund the whole $15 so they are refunding $5 for 6 months, so I am making out with $15. However I think this is a terrible business practice and am kinda disappointed because if i wouldn't have checked my bill i would have lost out.

Should I just take my $15 and forget about it? Or would this irritate you too?

This is DISH's list of what is included in SPI (Standard Professional Installation).

Standard Professional Installation includes:
• A pre-installation site survey.
• A signal strength test.
• Installation of dish(s), receiver(s), and connection(s) per the customer's plan agreement.
• An exterior cable run.
• Penetration of one exterior wall with necessary wiring to the receivers and televisions.
• Sealing and weatherproofing of all exterior penetrations.
• Connection of one television, one VCR/DVD player and one phone line to the receiver for single tuner configurations.
• An additional connection of a standard definition signal to a second television and VCR/DVD player that may not be located in
the same room as the receiver for dual tuner configurations.
• Integration of receivers with existing customer A/V equipment, if compatible. Upon completion of the installation, the customer's
system should operate the same as when the tech arrived.
• "DISH Approved as Compatible Accessories" as listed on DISH Portal.
• Installation of up to 150 feet of RG-6 cable.
• Wall plates, bushings and fittings, as needed.
• System peaking – obtaining an optimum signal for the best picture reception.
• Grounding of system components per National Electric Code (NEC) specifications.
• Wall fish to interior or exterior wall (may require an attic crawl). The number of receivers in the installation will determine how
many are necessary.
• MPEG-4 receivers ONLY: Installation of an appropriate HDMI or Component cable, which will provide the best picture quality
when receiver is hooked up to an SD or HD TV. .
• Home network broadband-connection for ViP® 612, ViP 622, ViP 722, ViP 722k, ViP 922 or Hopper receiver models.
• Signal access from either 110° and 119° or 61.5° and 72.7° orbital locations for all receiver models.
• Customer education on all receivers and programming.
• An 180-day installation warranty, which covers work completed during each installation.

What is included with custom installations?
Custom Installation not requiring additional fees include:
• Attic crawl
• Pole mounts with up to 50ft of trenching (trenching beyond 50ft is subject to additional fees, required at time of install)
• Eave mount
• Chimney mount
• Tripod installation

Custom work not listed here may require an additional charge, as determined by the Installer.

He wasn't charged for custom work by the installer. He was charged by Dish for a service call because the installation wasn't finished the first day. Again, It would have been totally fine if the installer said you need a pole mount and it costs $x for that custom job. That isn't what happened though. The installer was being a nice guy and doing the pole mount for free. The customer was then charged by Dish because he had to come out a second time to finish the initial installation.

The whole thing seems silly over $15 and the fact that Dish covered him with credits makes it a non issue. A customer still shouldn't be charged for a service call to finish a first time installation though especially when they weren't told that they would be.

?I posted the list primarily in response to previous posts about installers charging for a pole mount. DISH's business rules state that, while maybe they're custom, among other items, Pole mounts are part of an SPI and are to be included at no additional charge to the customer. I agree, the $15 service call to complete the original install was an error and was more than made up for with the credits applied to the OP's account.

Nothing wrong with the OP's post, until that is the final sentence. Once again, no matter what, someone is getting something for free and it makes them feel like they should be irritated. Feeling like being irritated would be paying the $15 when you believed it to be a mistake with no satisfaction from DISH. Looking at it as ending up as seeing DISH not only fixing what appears to be a mistake but giving something extra for a mistake is being happy getting an extra $15.

I jumped to the end, but if anybody suggested doing it yourself, the pole and concrete together cost $15.

Also it is corporate policy to not dig without utilities marked.

I had a BUD in the 80's before the little small dishes started showing up. The signals were unsrambled and then I had to get a monthly code.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

You can't even trust the cost per ounce info in grocery stores anymore

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't banned this guy from all of their stores. He has been on their CASE the past few months.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

Ice cream is that way too, use to be a half gallon, now its 1.5 quart or some say 48 oz

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner.

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

No, a pound of coffee refers strictly to the net weight of the coffee itself (16 ounces), not including the weight of the bag or packaging. [1, 2]

Net Weight: Food and coffee sold by weight are required by law to list the net weight on the label, which measures only the contents inside the package. [1, 2]
- Packaging Weight: The foil bag, valve, and label add extra weight to the total item when you hold it, meaning the gross weight on a scale will be slightly more than 16 ounces.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

DIRECTV Cutting Edge Non Disclosure Agreement

In order to participate in any Cutting Edge testing, you must sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Attached are a .docx (Microsoft Word) and PDF version of the latest DirecTV NDA. I found it easiest to complete the .docx version then paste a photo or scan image of my signature, cropped closely to just the signature into it as a picture. Then set Word to wrap text around the picture so that the picture follows the text "Signature".

People who have better PDF tools than I do may prefer that version.

When you apply for any Cutting Edge testing, you will be told how to send the signed copy.

Any NDA you have signed before is still valid for the testing you have been and hopefull still are doing. The new NDA forms are ror new CE testers and new categories of CE testing. They have been placed here so that people who volunteer for any CE testing have access to them.

Still with Choice package? My stepdad says when the game started he got black screen and something to do with not the right package.
He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Which is what is interesting, I see the 4KFox channel on 148-01 but we're not subscribed to our Locals. So why it's coming in is puzzling. I thought that maybe it was a perk for Dish subscribers for the MLB Postseason.

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

All DMA's now Western Arc

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Also Echostar 26 another super satellite on order for 119 orbital location will be ready in 15 months. he will have 110/119 for another 20 years. Dish will be the only satellte company left. The reason for rural areas and some people like satellite easy to operate and change channels in seconds.

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

my me t.v. is in HD via the sat. though it's better PQ via ota

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

Yes, I considered D* as I knew some of my favorite channels had better PQ but too many require moving up to the "Choice" package and incurring the Regional Sports Fee.
I do not have METV or any of the Weigel owned channels here in El Paso.
