Hi folks! My humble community TV station is looking for a programmable HD FTA receiver (Primarily for C Band channels, though we have a KU LNB as well). By programmable I mean being able to tell the receiver to tune to a particular TP frequency at a specific time, not necessarily move the dish.
We are currently an SD Scientific Atlantic that we need to replace. We tune to Classic Arts Showcase, deutsche welle, and a few other channels for some of our programming and need to upgrade.

Any recommendations? We just got a quote for a commercial unit for $5k and we just don't have that kind of scratch. Looking for the absolute cheapest that can do the job.

Any output or dish/switch control requirements? SD or HD service? (remember the DW service is supposed to be going HD only soon).

Yes. That;s what's prompting this purchase. We really only need composite video out. Our cable channels will not be going HD for quite some time. We could convert HDMI if we have to but we'd rather not.
ancient
How do you get the output of the receiver to the input of your control board? Are you somehow converting HDMI, or are you taking the old-style analog outputs, or what? Is your station digital? HD capable? Is it over the air (LPTV) or cable-only or what? Those things might make a difference in the recommendation.

Another question is, do you air all programming "live" or do you want to delay certain programs for later broadcast?

And, do you have just one dish that will move (even if the receiver isn't responsible for moving it) or do you have a fixed C-band dish pointed at each C-band satellite you're receiving channels from?

There are probably a lot of possible ways to do this, but it all depends on exactly what you are trying to do, what kind of equipment you currently have available, what kind of budget you have, and how technically astute you are. You can buy cheap receivers for under $50 on eBay but they probably won't do much of what you want.

It's possible that what you really want is not a receiver, but a satellite backend system that can tune in the channels you wish to receive and either stream them live over your local network, or record them for later broadcast. If you have a desktop computer that isn't ancient sitting around, you could put one or more DVB-S2 tuner cards in it and use them to receive the channels. Of course this assumes you control board has some way to receive live digital streams and put them on the air, while still doing any required legal ID's and such.

I would say that as a viewer, I would not want to watch a station that does some kind of crappy digital to analog and back to digital conversion. We have a LPTV station in our area that I'm sure must be doing something like that (although I'm half convinced they are receiving the channels, playing them on a 1970's era color TV, and then pointing a cheap color camera at the TV screen and broadcasting that; the picture is unbelievably bad). I'm guessing that under 5K is not unrealistic PROVIDING you have someone there who is really into technical stuff, and it wouldn't hurt if they know their way around Linux and computer hardware.

I run a backend system in my home using TVHeadEnd and it's taken me over two years to get it working somewhat reliably, and even now and then I still have occasional issues with it (signal breakups, an attack of the purple lines, etc.). If I had used "professional grade" tuner cards from the start I probably wouldn't have had some of the issues I've encountered along the way, but like you I had a limited budget. And the fact that Linux and I don't exactly get along doesn't help. But still, it gives me a lot more versatility than any receiver I have ever owned, and despite the issues I would not go back. Unfortunately such a system is not the cheapest way out; even if you build the computer from parts you are probably going to want a good professional-grade tuner card with multiple tuner inputs (maybe something like this). I don't know if such a system would work for you, or would prove too complicated or give you too many hassles in getting the signal to air, I just throw it out there as another possibility you may want to consider, particularly since a lot of receivers nowadays are cheap foreign-made models that may be fine for home use, since an individual user can deal with occasional freezups and other weirdness. But if you're looking for something that will work reliably (and particularly for remote or unattended operation) then those cheap receivers may not be the way to go, though some are definitely better than others.

P.S. I was still typing this when you posted your previous message. If you're still dealing with analog only, just keep in mind that almost all the signals on satellite are digital now, so you will have a loss in quality. If I were you I'd try to buy equipment that also has digital capability, so you don't need to go out and do all this again when your cable system upgrades. But I thought maybe you had a LPTV station with at least some digital capability.

Thanks for the time you took for the response. I appreciate that.

We are cable/only community TV station. We are on two local cable systems locally and we also live stream two of the 6 channels we program.
The cable systems crush our signal, no matter what we send them to 720x480 SD (at best, I suspect it's less). Programming we record in HD from our production truck and other portable equipment is left HD for the on demand internet channel, but we have to downres to SD for cable playback, mostly because of the limitations of our master control system, but also because cable's gonna crush it anyway.

We are currently using a Scientific-Atlantic SD receiver feeding our master control switch via composite video. The master control switch decides what to do with that signal (live or record for playback later). The recording MUST be MPEG-2 SD because of the limitations of the playback system.

Now... having said all that... What we are looking for want... it's really simple.... is an HD CBand receiver (it can also have KU but it's not necessary), that has the capability to program times to tune in transponders so we can slide in to where our current SD CBand receiver is sitting for as little money as possible. Our budget is minuscule and we want to keep providing the programming we currently have once several channels switch to HD.

Is there such a receiver for less than $5k?
Titanium
Try less than $200! LOL!

Most consumer DVB S2 receivers have analog composite video and analog audio output with down conversion for any format that you are tuning. Probably any FTA set-top box will do the basic job to meet your requirements as long as someone in playback department regularly checks the signal to make sure the receiver hasn't locked up or the AV (lip sync) hasn't drifted. The receivers can also be programmed to switch between satellite feeds for unattended feed selection and even to cycle off to force the signal to reacquire and resync the AV (lip sync).

I know that GEOSATpro has a few less expensive commercial rack mount models ($400 and up) that are likely overkill for your current needs. https://satelliteav.com/p/shop/?ws_cat=485

A consumer STB like the Manhattan 1997 or 1978 models or the Linkbox 9000i would probably provide the right functions with composite output and licensed Dolby decoding without breaking the piggy bank! I have sold and installed many consumer STBs for public access, community TV and low power broadcast stations.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.

They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

The A.I. agent appears to be better than in the past. It got to the acceptable price quicker than previous years, no human operator involved. $5/mo and I still have over $50 in SiriusXM credit from my FordPartner benefits.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Ok, I'm bored .... actually - to be more precise - I'm bored of eating the same rotation of 9 or 10 meals that are currently my "go-to" meals. My wife works the long hours - I work from home as and when i feel like it ... which means i generally do most of the cooking ... and so by default - i also make out the shopping list ...

We cook at home 5 or even 6 nights a week - but we always seem to fall back on the same old tried and tested "quick and easy but tastes ok" meals. Week in week out.

Pot Roast - mash and Peas.
Spaghetti
Chicken Pasta in cheese sauce.
Curry & rice
(these are some of mine)

Now it's not that I'm not adventurous in the kitchen ... I'll try anything once or twice ... but we all do it. Unless your name is Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray .. we all eventually fall back on our 8-10 favorite "meals"

So i thought - if we shared some of our own go-to meals with each other ... we might be able to add a few "new" ones to our own arsenal of meals.

So again - I ask you ...

What's for dinner tonight ?

Please give me something new to add to my rotation ... its our weekly shop tomorrow - so i want to pull together a few idea's and try and eat a meal each day next week that I've never had before .. or at least something that is not on my current "go-to" meal plan.

What meal do you always seem to fall back on in your house ? Maybe its something that I've never tried or not had in a while. I need inspiration !! I've got a blank shopping list in front of me - and nothing sounds good .. HELP !

Smoked some salmon on the grill while enjoying some Blue Moon beer. Kinda cool tonight so I fired up the heaters. Here in FL, we fire up heaters once the temps get below 60 :cool As for the salmon, I seared them first, then flipped them off to the side not over the coals and brushed on some lemon pepper marinade followed by some salmon seasoning. Threw some hickory chips on the coals and then closed the vents to about 10% airflow. Yum.

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.
harshness
The EV company to watch out for is SAIC. They seem likely to take over Government Motors at some point.

GM originally struck a JV deal with SAIC to gain access to China. Now SAIC has taken China back with the substantial library of technology GM shared and they're looking to export to Mexico, South America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
