Any merger would have to be carefully handled with the custies. Otherwise, there will be a lot of "well, I've got to change anyway; I might as well look at my other options."

Some will leave just because they don't like "the other guy."

I'm interested in how they will sell this idea to the gummint. Vague "back room savings" won't cut it.

PS- For a while, Echostar made boxes that could be programmed for both systems. A lot has changed since then. But maybe the hopper, with or without an additional box, could handle both. Doubtful, but maybe. I expect any requirement to swap out dishes and LNBs would be a killer.

DirecTV, Dish Are Close to Clinching Merger Agreement

DirecTV and Dish are in advanced talks to merge in a deal that would create the largest US pay-TV provider, with almost 20 million subscribers, people familiar with the matter said.

An agreement could be announced as soon as the coming days, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential information. DirecTV is in talks to control the combined entity, which will be closely held, the people said.

The companies are still working through details of how the combination might be structured, according to the people. While talks are advanced, they could still be delayed or falter, the people said.

Ah yes, because they have such a crack management team that's been doing such a good job the past few years! Not that there's any saving the idea of lashing the Titanic and the Britannic together and hoping that somehow makes them sink more slowly.

But they only lost 14 Million Subscribers since AT&T purchased DirecTV.

This story still does not make sense to me, the costs alone in merging the two companies will be astronomical, for less returns.

Currently, DirecTV losses about 2 Million subscribers a year, Dish over a million, those losses will actually increase as Cord Cutting continues , plus the fact that a merged company will bring higher prices, which means it will push more to streaming and the less expensive pricing it provides, along with more content.

Combining the back office functions alone will save millions...as equipment wears out..they just switch them to dish..no need to spend billions for a 1 time cutover..Just wait it out

It costs a LOT of money to get to that point. They have their own computer systems for customer information, billing, accounting, etc. and one will have to be converted to the other. That's not cheap, and it will take time before the savings you mention pays back that initial cost.

If Directv is the one controlling the combined entity, and given that they have the superior satellite fleet and more (though not many more these days) customers I think you'll find that if they are "switching" customers over from one to the other it will be from Dish to Directv.

Though in reality I don't expect to see any switching. Both companies probably have warehouses full of refurbished or ready to be refurbished equipment to hand out from all the cord cutters over the past few years. The only reason to do a cutover will be if they cancel the satellite Dish has reportedly ordered. Not sure which arc that is for, or how soon it will be needed, but any affected customers would be converted to use Directv's satellites.

Maybe they'd just need to design them a new dish, worst case it has new electronics to work with Dish's receivers though I suspect Dish's most recent stuff is essentially similar to Directv's SWM so with updated firmware Dish's gear might be able to function directly off a Directv SWM dish.

Yes but according to the article won't be ready for launch for a few years. They could probably cancel the order and while they'd owe some money, they'd owe a lot less than the full cost of the satellite (and avoid the cost of launching it)

I absolutely could see this. If I remember right, there are 11 transponders on 119 and 3 on 110 that DirecTV/ATT own, and if this goes through, I would assume that the Dish subscribers could then access those transponders with no hardware change. If the Dish customer base needed more space, there is a lot of space there that could be used.

so what will direct do with sling tv??? i know most are not going to pay dtv stream rates!!! if they get rid of sling tv then they will have to come up with a skinny bundle that matches sling tv at the same price point. then you have the dtv haters that will just walk away. some speculation from a csr's mouth everyone will be moved over to the DTV system in time. just pure speculation now but who knows how this will all play out.

Which arc is getting the new satellite? If it is going to the 110/119 arc then they probably don't even have a use for the new satellite if they get 14 additional transponders. If it is for the eastern arc then the additional transponders on 110/119 would be "nice to have" but not really change anything.

They couldn't use the ones on 119 right away. Directv is currently using them to deliver locals (via national beams) in MPEG2 SD to some markets. They can shut down those like they have shut down MPEG2 SD locals in most markets (many never had them at all) but that will take some months between the need to notify customers and give them time to upgrade necessary equipment. It is more of an issue for places like hotels and nursing homes than residential customers.

It could go to 72.7W where Nimiq 5 is currently stationed. Nimiq 5 was launched a little over 15 years ago.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

Had a customer call recently saying their remote was really acting up, some buttons no longer functioned. Told them to reboot the Hopper....problem fixed.
Wife bought me a t-shirt that has "have you tried turning it off and on again?"

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

You are thinking of the 921. The 922 was the first DVR with Sling functionality built in (that was eventually disabled along with the Sling Adapter for the 722s and the 1st Hopper because they relied on now-defunct Adobe Flash technology). With the bugginess described by others and the removal of its marquee feature (Sling) the 922 faded into obscurity once the Hopper 2 with built in Sling was released and they finally made the concept into a fully functional product.

I had one, the front panel lighting was cool, the menus were fresh and a lot more modern looking than the ViPs. However, it was very buggy and the Sling functionality just didn't work well - I think it was due to internet speeds at the time. I think I had to pay $40 for the Sling app on my phone iirc.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.
