I saw in another thread that DirectTV has another 6 months on thier deal with Viacom and I also see that some people are or have switched to DirectTV cause DirectTV doesn't/won't have this problem. Well it might be because Dish Network has basically fought the battle for them. All they gotta do now is go in there and say, hey you did this and that for Dish, we want the same deal. Is that possible?

D* has already signed a deal with Viacom (a couple months back I believe) so they're set for several years. E* just doesn't have the power that cable or D* has at this point. They really need to merge with a bigger company to give them more leverage at the bargaining table.

E* and D* have roughly the same amount of bargaining power, D* only has 1.5 million more subs. D* simply chose to bend over and take Viacom's huge increase and willingly pay a large price for Nicktoons and Dish didn't. It's pretty simple, they are forcing the same contract on everyone and Charlie decided to stand up and say no for a change. I think Charlie is doing everyone a favor by doing this, and it has nothing to do with needing a merge. Personally, I think they are doing fine as an independent company.
C
You don't know that D* caved. For all we know Charlie is caving now because of all the cancelations because of this.
S
So Rupert Murdoch and News Corp didn't bring any leverage to the table? Uh... Ok. You go right ahead and believe that.

And, since you have such great knowledge about the "huge increase D* bent over and took" with the D*/Viacom deal, please enlighten me. Go ahead. In the meantime, I switched to D* last Dec and am STILL paying less than I was with E* and have more channels after D* recent rate increase.

Finally...
You think releasing hardware before it's ready is fine?
You think miscalculating how SuperDish will work is fine?
You think selling hardware that isn't available fine?
You (obviously) think losing quite a few popular channels is fine?

I guess if that's what you want to put up with, that's cool!

Viacom couldn't care less if Rupert didn't want their channels, Viacom didn't have anything more to lose from Direct than they did with Dish. D* customers would be pissed without MTV just as E* customers are at the time. Rupert being tied into Fox is not important to Viacom since Viacom only distributes channels, they don't own a cable or satellite service obviously where Fox's service would have been important. Also let me remind you that Rupert has publicly stated that Direct MUST CURB PROGRAMMING COSTS and there WILL BE high-profile programming disputes between Directv and programmers to get costs down. Rupert is as much (if not more) of a penny pincher than Charlie is. D* is not immune to this.

It's clear you aren't a fan of E*, I see you bashing them at every chance you get. Now that you have D*, you shouldn't worry about us E* folks anymore. I've had D* in the past, and I think there service is vastly inferior to Dish and I wouldn't have them back if their service was free. Others here that have Dish, feel the same way probably. It's a matter of opinion. IMO, I am proud of Charlie and have never been more proud to be a E* customer after seeing the special chat last night. Charlie is a good guy regardless of what anyone else thinks.

By the way, enjoy Rupert taking away your 30 second skip functions, limiting amount of time you can keep recordings, and putting other limitations on your PVRs!
S
So, the answer is you DON'T have any real info about how D* "bent over and took it" from Viacom? And your statement is just YOU slinging negative comments about D*, right?

No, I'm not a big fan of E* and have no reason to be after how they've handled all kinds of issues over the last year. And, they haven't improved AT ALL, IMO. You obviously don't mind any of that, and that's fine.

BTW, I hardly bash E* every chance I get. That would certainly be a full-time job and I know I have better things to do.

Nobody said you shouldn't be proud of Charlie, or E*, or the fact that most people can't get a 921 or 811 even though they're being sold by E*. It's certainly just an opinion.

And my opinion in this thread was simply that E* isn't fighting D* battles -- especially since D* fought this particular battle a couple months ago.

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

I run them through several different providers to see who has the lowest cost

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

Also...

You can also price them through the CareCard and WellRx apps.

Sometimes Amazon Pharmacy is cheapest.

I am fortunate that the couple things I take end up being no cost to me. So far!

I get shipped 90 day supply automatically by CVS via my Medicare Advantage plan.

This is interesting, I saw this thread and thought I'd look into cost for my drugs and Neither of the sites show it, so it won't help me at all. :(

TrumpRx?!?

I went on Medicare recently (not an "advantage" plan) and my prescriptions at HyVee were very low out of pocket. The clerk said she was putting them on "Good Rx".

My OTA is not working anymore. This started after the latest update. I have the OTA dongle with a OTA antenna that I've been using for years. My hopper does not recognize the dongle anymore and when I go to the OTA setting, it has a screen that says to plug a dongle into the USB. I tried unplugging and plugging back, in the same usb port and other ports. The Hopper does not recognize it. Anyone have same issue?

No updates but if you can get DISH Technical Operations to roll you back to H710 or earlier even though H708 would be best because it also eliminates another problem like in this comment, you will also no longer have the problem as long as you don't update manually or forced to any new version until the problem is fixed as the problem started in H711 and still exist in H712 and H713.

Installed an off-air antenna a couple days ago for a customer who had just cancelled his Dish service. He had a dual off-air adapter and gave it to me. Cool. I'll keep it on the truck....might come in handy. Got to admit I don't watch anything as far as live tv goes anymore. Even if we have severe weather, our local channels will have a live feed on Youtube.

In other news, it was announced that the software fix for the two tin cans and a string will not be forthcoming. A hardware fix is required. However, that fix will let you receive stations from a gazillion miles away.

Truck roll charges may apply. Two year commitment required.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Even a physical disc purchase is considered a license, just extremely harder to pull access vs digital.

But once new players are no longer sold and older players quit working, that takes care of the access to your library.

See LaserDiscs for one example of that happening.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.

What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.
