I vote to get rid of the 2nd WC team, back when 1 team was a WC, it was great, the second one dilutes the playoffs, however, to MLB's joy, Bud's joy actually, more teams are in it longer .... and because of it, we get the type of trade deadline we just went thru.

no, the second WC is a must! we don't to go back to September where it doesn't matter because Boston or NY are 5GB up, they want a battle for the Division in September and not a easy way into the playoffs

With the 2nd WC, Boston and NY are almost guaranteed to get into the playoffs in most years.

and with that 1 game playoff you can ruin Boston or NY Pitching Rotation, take this year, if Kuroda pitched that 1 game playoff Kuroda can't come back until game 3 or game 4 out of a 5 games series

Usually most of the major trades by contenders are done before the non-waiver deadline. Any major deal after that is usually done between teams not in contention. But this year maybe different because of number of teams that still don't know if they are buyers or seller, and the unknowns about possible suspensions.

Actually, in most cases, at least one of the teams is usually still in contention. Last year's Red Sox/Dodgers megadeal is a prime example...

Two very usable pieces during a pennant race. When I first saw this, I was surprised both cleared waivers considering both contracts are reasonable. Then I remembered the waivers rule that whatever league the waiving team plays (in this case the NL) gets first dibs of the waived player(s) in inverse order of record. Considering the five NL playoff teams are a virtual lock, it's really not a surprise.

If Byrd or Buck were waived by an AL team, you can be sure they would have been harder to get through the logjam of
NYY/BAL/CLE/OAK/TB/TEX/BOS.
