I live on a farm and have Directv in my house. I have a barn next door that I also own but is considered a different address. I'm wanting to add service to the barn, since that's where I am most of the time, but Directv told me I'd have to add a new account to get service there since the barn is over 150ft away from the satellite. I asked if I could add it as a "vacation home" and the rep said that normally you only get service at one location or the other, but not both at the same time. I asked her what she meant by "normally" since she didn't say I "couldn't" do that, but she just repeated the "normally" statement. I'd have to call in and have service deactivated and reactivated every day and night when I went to the barn and then came back to the house. Any suggestions on how to proceed without adding a new account and paying double?

:welcome to Satelliteguys drewlawson!

As long as you aren't much more than 150 ft, you should be able to do it yourself without any problems. One of the installers here will chime in if the distance is an issue. If you have a swm setup without a splitter, just add a splitter and run a line to the barn off of it. Make sure you have the power inserter on the power passing port of the splitter. If you don't have a swm setup, just run a cable from one of the open ports on the lnb on the dish to the barn. Get an additional receiver from Directv and connect it yourself. If they insist on sending a tech out, you can get a receiver from a vendor like Solid Signal instead. It will cost you $99 and an extension on your contract, or a new contract if you aren't currently on one.

A bit more info. The barn is about 600 ft away, (200 yards) so running it off the current dish won't work. I do however have a 2nd receiver that's not being used right now. I feel like I only need to find a satellite and put it up myself at the barn then hook it up to the 2nd receiver I have and have the receiver activated. Am I wrong on that?

That is WAY too long ...

Your option of adding another dish at that spot and moving your recvr over there will work.
Activate the other recvr while your at the home and then move it to the barn.

Jimbo is correct, you would need to install an additional dish on the barn. Make sure you use the same type of setup, either swm or non swm, at each location. That will make swapping a receiver much easier.

I thought about this when I woke up today. Since the barn has its own address (and it's own mini-apartment), could I get some kind of movers deal from Directv and have my services moved next door (to a new address) and still be able to use the setup I have at my personal house?

If you do, it will trigger another commitment.
