Looks like 77 is all locals now. Pretty cool to see all the core SD channels and a few HDs on one slot. Shows you the true benefit of running 8PSK w/MPEG4 and they don't even have all 32 transponders yet.

I figure by the time all is said and done they will have a whole bird (61.5) for more HD and additional services. Dish needs to get on the horse and start migrating WA over to this type of setup! Once the whole 8psk mpeg 4 thing happens over on WA dish should be sittting really well.

I am wondering if Dish can solve some of the mixed arc problems by mirroring some of the SD locals from 110/119 W onto 77 W. Of course if they did this and subscribers were converted to pure EA setups they would have to swap out their non-MPEG-4 receivers.

I am sure Dish would rather just keep things the way they are right now as it is the cheapest way to go about it. Keep MPEG-2 equipment at WA and new customers with MPEG-4 equipment at EA. As time goes on there will be less MPEG-2 equipment.

I am curious in the future what they will do with both arcs, have them both in MPEG-4 or use them for other services, perhaps internet/data/other services.

Some quick reasons why it works to have two arcs.

1) Line of sight issues. If a potential sub can't see western arc sats at their home, eastern arc sat is an answer. This keeps a new potential sub from going with cable due to line of sight issues.

2) DISH needs to upgrade all subs to mpeg 4 receivers so they can turn all of western arc to mpeg 4 as well. Having eastern arc in mpeg 4 means all new subs are automatically going with mpeg 4 receivers from the start. All who upgrade to 1000.4 sat dish have to upgrade receivers to mpeg 4 as well. This is the start of the total mpeg 4 conversion for the entire country.

Once the conversion is complete with the entire country in mpeg 4 , they will have completed it without hurting the pq for hd locals by using two arcs instead of cramming all on to one sat arc like before. Remember the bad pq on sd locals a few years ago? They were like watching streaming internet video with more artifacts.

They need to start making an MPEG4 SD out only unit. Take some of the returned failed units, disable the HD out then people who don't want HD don't have to pay extra for an HD unit, this way they can start converting the WA to MPEG4

Why bother... give them all HD boxes since they also output SD, saves a truck roll when someone finally upgrades to a new HDTV.

Except for the new 512 receiver. It is , I think an mpeg 4 receiver that is just for SD channels. I think this is a waste. If no hd fee , no reason why you don't use just hd receivers to all new subs and like Scott said , once they want hd , no truck roll. Just a flip of the switch at DISH and you have an hd sub and $10.00 more a month from a sub.

nope, the 512 is a repurposed 522/625 MPEG2 box with TV2 output disabled. But still a waste as you said.

Yep... I've said this before, but a buddy of mine ordered a 4 room install with SD. To my surprise he got 2 - 222k's and a Dish 1000.2. He's ready to go for the 8PSK conversion, MPEG4 conversion, and HD when he's ready to swap out his TV.

The first thing Dish should do is put the Scranton locals on 77. Of course, knowing Dish, this will probably be the last thing they do.

Well it seems most everything is getting moved to the 72.7 off the 77,
Any reason why? International?

Because they can ;) 72 is a stronger satellite and has a better footprint for CONUS so it's really a no-brainer.

I think Scott needs to write about this in his column one day. There's plenty of room to fire up the locals on 77 for you guys. Light a fire under Dish to get this done, until there is a more permanent fix in place for you guys...ie. E14.
